Extremely Disappointing Experience at Ambra – Would Not Recommend
We had a very unfortunate and disappointing experience at Ambra in Copenhagen, where we had planned to celebrate our 10-year anniversary as dentists – an event we had looked forward to for a long time.
We initially booked a table for 12 people, three weeks in advance via email. The restaurant informed us that, due to the group size, we would be served a fixed menu at 450 DKK per person, and that we could only keep the table from 17:00 to 19:30 due to later reservations. That was understandable, and we agreed.
The day before the dinner, I received a message asking me to confirm our reservation. I didn’t see it until the day of the event, and when I replied, I informed the restaurant that we would only be 10 people. I never received a response to this message.
When we arrived at 17:00, five people had ultimately cancelled, meaning we were only seven. We were immediately told that we would still need to pay for all 12 menus due to their 24-hour cancellation policy. While we understand policies exist, the way this was handled felt rigid and unwelcoming – especially given what followed.
The restaurant was half empty, and the service was shockingly poor. We were told the food for all 12 had already been prepared, so there was no room for compromise. Oddly, however, when we asked for three vegetarian menus, they were able to accommodate that – which seemed to contradict their earlier claim.
No one introduced the dishes as they were served. The waitstaff simply placed large platters on the table and left. No one asked us if we wanted drinks or offered any wine suggestions. The main course was served in the same way – four platters of pasta, seemingly portioned just for the seven of us. When I asked why there wasn’t food for 12, if we were paying for it, the waitress simply replied: “There’s no reason to serve food for 12 if you’re only seven.”
For dessert, they placed five extra bowls of ice cream in the middle of the table – as if to “compensate” – but it came off as condescending and frankly humiliating.
Overall, we felt deeply disrespected and very poorly treated. What was supposed to be a special celebration turned into a frustrating and unpleasant evening. We won’t be returning to Ambra, and unfortunately cannot recommend it to others based on this experience.
