Payments quick, but woe betide anyone who needs customer services
This is a mixed review. The taking payments side of things is fine. It works very well. Payments take on Monday, go into the account on Tuesday. The only time we have ever had a payment issue is a staff issue our end, in not counting the right amounts.
The downside is when there is a problem, and you have to try and attempt to speak to them. Customer services here is shocking, appalling, and a disgrace. This week we had a card terminal that was faulty. We had had it for several years. We telephoned and we were presented with an automated system that required us to give our merchant number. Whether it was keyed in or verbally given, it repeatedly did not like. When it did recognise it, it then took you to the next stage of automated questions - what do you, and this is where you end up going in circles as the system does not understand the question you are asking. I then found that if I did not give my merchant number at the start I would get fed much quicker through to an operator.
The operators are not based in the UK, despite them all having pretend UK names like Marge, Vince, Melvin, etc. The accents are extremely difficult to understand, and they use internal jargon regularly - ID&V, output address, group address, terminal address, TID number, etc. One of the issues we had was the faulty terminal was located at a property that we notified a change of address to in October 2024. It turns out that while they had changed the group address, and the 'terminal address' they had not changed to 'output address', and that somehow was my fault.
During the week I made 7 attempted calls, two successfully got through to a human. On the second of these the matter was supposedly resolved, and the new terminal was sent out.
The terminal arrived yesterday and did not work. We telephoned again, the usual headache of getting through but this time they would not accept our address. They said a word was missing. They refused to take us further. I then telephoned again, giving exactly the same information and this time I got through. I was told the new terminal need authorising, and to do this I needed to provide the TID and serial numbers. I explained I was calling from head office, and that I would need to speak to the shop location with the terminal, but found it frustrating they did not know the terminal they had despatched. So I had to end the call, telephone our shop, get the TID and serial numbers and ring Barclaycard back again.
This time when I telephone the person who responded did not accept my address. I was livid and demanded to know how 30 minutes ago it was fine, and now it wasn't. He put me on hold. When he came back he gave me an incoherent garbled explanation that made no sense but said I had now passed security! I said I had the TID and serial numbers, but he said he did not need these, he needed to speak to the shop.
As a small business this meant I had to ask the shop manager, the only employee on site to close the shop, on the afternoon of the busiest day of the week, in order for her to be able to take the call.
The service was appalling.
