Diagnosed during the first draft. Finished during recovery. Submitted when the scans came back clear. The team knew none of this until after we signed and when I told them they responded with warmth that had nothing to do with the book and everything to do with being decent human beings. The book is about survival in ways that are both literal and not. It found its readers and they found each other through it.

Nobody in my family had ever written a book. Nobody had gone to college either until me. This book is about both of those things and what they cost and what they gave. The editorial team understood the weight of that story without me having to explain the sociology of it. First generation everything is exhausting and lonely and they made this part of it feel neither.

Here's the thing about publishing a humor book everyone suddenly becomes very serious. Lots of concerned faces in editorial meetings about whether jokes land, whether the tone is consistent, whether readers will get the references. My editor was the exception.
She was funny herself which sounds obvious but apparently isn't guaranteed, and she flagged bits that weren't working with the same energy as the bits that were.
The cover is genuinely hilarious in exactly the right way. Launch day social content captured the book's voice instead of defaulting to generic "exciting news" publishing speak. Sold out my first print run faster than expected which is a fun problem to have. Four stars because I'm saving five for the sequel if they'll have me.

I engaged their marketing team after my book had already been published, and they were able to work within that context without difficulty. The strategy they proposed was practical and tailored to my budget. Results were gradual rather than immediate, which in retrospect was a more sustainable outcome than a short burst of attention would have been.

I am in Canada, and the company is from US, which is long distance for both of our parties. I have my Amazon account, and of course with KDP, so during the call from US to Canada, they helped me publish on my account. Right now, my book successfully published on Amazon for eBooks and paperbacks vision. And I have another project with them as well, which is ongoing, but will update the situation if you need it.
