My Experience with CELPIP vs IELTS
I took the CELPIP test and scored 8 in three and 7 in one . I took my test at the Nanaimo test centre. While my scores were decent, I found the Listening and Reading sections to be much more academic than I expected from a test that is supposed to assess general English ability.
Because of this experience, I decided to take IELTS as well. Surprisingly, although IELTS is often considered more difficult, I was able to achieve the score I needed (triple 7 and 8). In my experience, IELTS focused more on general knowledge and practical language use, whereas CELPIP felt more academic and strategy-based.
I had already booked another CELPIP test at the same location on December 28th, and I plan to take it again after spending more time understanding what CELPIP is specifically looking for, rather than just general language ability. I will come back and update my results after that test.
My main reason for posting this review is to share my concern that CELPIP seems intentionally designed with academic-style language, especially in Listening and Reading, which can make test-takers feel they need extensive practice and test-specific strategies. For a test marketed as general English, this was unexpected and surprising.
