What you are looking at A slim pitcher cartridge with mesh inlet screens on top, filled with media designed to enhance alkalinity. It presses into the bottom of the pitcher's reservoir and seals, so the water you pour into the top passes through the media before it reaches the pitcher below. How an alkalizing pitcher cartridge works Alkalinity, explained Alkalinity is water's capacity to neutralize acid. In everyday water it comes mostly from dissolved carbonate and bicarbonate. Alkalinity and pH are related but not the same thing: pH is a snapshot of how acidic or basic water is right now, while alkalinity is the reserve that resists change.
