Scrap CVS and revert to independents

Nute Vets in Cornwall was a good place to take animals and at one stage were sensibly priced. That was until CVS came on the scene and put profit over care for animals. They will argue this point however the costs charged now are excessive and they stated to me if you want the best, then you have to pay for the best - and they still believe that vets are not paid enough!
Since Nute have been part of CVS (the 2nd largest consortium in the country with 500 practices) it has all got out of hand - as you would expect in a consortium so the 2 ways forward are to put up or shut up.
I have voted with my feet and decided to leave there and go to an independent family run vet where prices are much cheaper and their animal schemes for worm/flea etc are also much cheaper.
CVS claim to have more "pulling power" to keep costs down where in reality they buy cheap and sell high so blatently clear this is all about money.
I welcome the CMA report being published but whatever the outcome, vets practices need to be regulated and as such prices for consultations, drugs etc standardised across the country (certainly under CVS whether in London, the north or the south) so everyone pays the same irrespective of location.
CVS and the other consortiums pull on our heart strings because they know we love our animals so will pay.
Perhaps CVS should stand some of the costs themselves and not pass EVERYTHING on to the customer/pet owner.....the proof that profit over animal care is the order of the day.
The CEO Richard Fairman has tendered his resignation (30 March 2026) so expect further price hikes when paying him his bonuses for doing quite frankly an appalling job.

I welcome a reply from CVS Vets - preferably from the CEO.....if they can be bothered to reply.

Musk and Trump can afford it but this…

Musk and Trump can afford it but this Group needs to change it's rip off pricing/incentive/upselling policies to a more ethical trading practice

Experiences over past few years with vets in this Group :
Quoted approx 3 weeks to get dogs annual injections (at double the cost charged by others)

Quoted £1500 for very small wart removal - when queried reduced cost to £1000 (nice round figure) i.e double what was available elsewhere.

Quoted £3000 for MRI scan for elderly dog diagnosed with brain seizure in order to meet 'The Gold Standard of Care' MRI scans elsewhere quoted between £1900 and £2300

Level of care from Vets is fine as stated by others but this is not unique - good vets do work in the private sector

Maybe a 1* to come????

Maybe a 1* to come. The practice is great and staff understanding, patient and friendly.
However beginning to think being ripped off for no fault of the practice but the greedy money making company and business management in charge of the practice. A little time will tell to see whether * will go up of down?????? Get a feeling profit and money for business managers comes before well being of the employees and welfare of animals.

Negligence

Horrible experience, my puppy would have died alone in a cage while in their care. Should have known after waiting 40 min for blood results they had to restart with another blood sample so another hour waiting. They did not call me to tell me how bad he was. Poor conmunication, poor attention, poor empathy, tests without consent and did not rush our baby to specialist when they finally realized how bad he was. In fact wanted to do an xray/sedation ibstead of rushing him to specialist! I then had to call every 2 hours to get an update with no success. He spent another night there instead of being rushed to the specialist, which I requested early afternoon. Didn't get update until 1:30am. They made him walk out when we went to get him to finally get him to specialist. He could NOT breathe and they made him walk out!! 30 min later he died in our arms. As we carried our baby out, the vet ran out after us to say he'll send us the remaing 1.2k bill which we had paid!!! Over 2k for 2 nights of neglect. Do not take your pet here.

Not pet related but more commercial

Not pet related but more commercial. CVS have got no ethics at all in business After close on 2 years negotiating and agreeing property lease they don’t have the decency to advise us that they are not going ahead . It truly amazes me that people don’t have any respect or integrity in the business world . If you or anyone is considering renting any property to this company just give it a second thought. What with legal fees and loss of rent I am around £100k down over the period . Not a good word to say about them

Rodgers Brock and Barker - Stoke

Rodgers Brock and Barker (sits under CVS VETS) stoke on trent used to be amazing, expensive but it used to be worth it. Its no longer the vets it used to be. All that matters to them now is profit. My dog went in for a health check and had his anal glands emptied, they didnt clean the area before the procedure and he came out with an infection, I was forced to pay £139 after multiple visits back, I requested to see the manager in person, she refused, I requested call backs, she refused, I emailed, ignored the majority. Sarcastic replies with zero empathy and have no care that they have now lost my custom and treated me and my dog poorly. My advice would be to find a family run vets and stay clear of RBB, if anything goes wrong, they won't put it right

Avoid

Avoid horrible financially grabbing practice, £150 booking fee 5 am appointment, assessment charge £54,00, + tests totalled £850 vet rang me at around 8.30am with results got no where and one or two word answers. Rang practice back to euthanise poodle another £333.60. For 3 hrs of their time it cost around £1200, no answers to what was wrong with her, and i ended up with no poodle either. When the vet rang at 8.30 am she wanted another £1200 for the remaining 21 hrs, then a possibility of extra 2 days at one thousand pounds a day, and if she required a operation for pyometria it would be extra 2 thousand pounds, I was absolutely devastated, as I was literally out priced of pet ownership. They don't care, I went into the practice to pay the outstanding remainder of 330.60, only to be told, your paying to late and we've sent the outstanding amount to a debt collector, I was told don't pay us PAY THEM. In shock I asked who are they and where are they, the answer came, I don't know! Got absolutely nowhere with the practice manager. I received a letter stating i had 14 days to get off their books and register my animals with another practice, since i was never registered with in the first place, and since the poodle has been euthanised, do they honestly think if i ring another vet practice they are going to register a recently deceased poodle and put the poodles records on their database. I genuinely hope karma comes back
round to bite them in the arxe and the lot falls down round their earholes.

Been a client of this vets for over 50…

Been a client of this vets for over 50 years but sadley taken over by this group a few years ago , because I am loyal even though no out of hours I stayed with them as vet that I saw was brilliant and very helpful
My cat needed yearly vac and always have Purvax as one of my cats nearly died with having Tricate
Booked in then a phonecall to say would have to order Purvax in which was fine then another phone call to say that I would have to pay for 10 doses or find my own
Was told I was the only one that used it which wasnt true as a friend also had 3 cats and my 4 so not lost much
Needless to say I went to an independent vets who oredered it in and just paid for the one dose
Outcome is new vets dont have a turnover of vets and all very experienced and prices very different and so wished had left when this company took over

Where is the monopoly commission

My local vets of 10 years got bought by them in the last few months, I more annoyed that the owner cashed on this greedy company. Also noticed since the change , most of the original staff have company left. I went get my at Thyroid medicination , I was never told about the price increase of 75%, I couldn't afford it and now have to go online. All the prices at vets have gone up by 75%+. All they care is taking money from sick animals and overinflate the prices. I will be writing to the monopoly commission and RSV, to stop companies buying small independents.

AVOID this business!!!

My experience with this veterinary practice fell significantly below the standard one. This vet is part of the CVS UK Ltd group. They don’t wish to mediate!!!

Communication was poor, there appeared to be a general lack of warmth from some staff—particularly towards cats. During my cat drop-off for a potential tooth extraction, the practice’s systems were not even switched on, which meant I was asked a series of questions that should have been readily accessible in her medical records. I was offered a blood test (at an additional cost), which I agreed to, unaware that one had already been carried out just two weeks prior. Had their systems been used, this would have been evident!

With regards to a dispense of medication - no one checked the contents of the bag at the time of collection—despite me specifically calling ahead to request pain relief. It was handed over without any verification or quality control which led to me being given flea and worm killer, not the pain relief. This kind of oversight could cause major issues for clients with limited transport or mobility, and it’s disappointing that such a basic safety process isn’t in place at a long-established practice. It could ENDANGER an animal!

I was also deeply concerned with the way my initial complaint was handled. Although it was made privately, it received a public response from Philip which I felt was unprofessional. When escalated, I was surprised to be referred to by my job title—an unnecessary and irrelevant detail that added to my dissatisfaction.

Eventually, the director Tina became involved as a final point of contact. While I appreciated her intervention, the tone of our interactions felt more business-oriented than focused on genuine client care—something I’ve now come to expect within the CVS UK Ltd group. Despite acknowledging the failings, they have refused to issue any form of refund and still intend to charge the full amount. As a result, I am now disputing the transaction via my credit card provider. Should any monies be recovered, I will be donating the full amount to a local cat charity (one unaffiliated with CVS UK Ltd).

The practice promotes itself as having Silver Cat Friendly status, yet my experience didn’t reflect this. While a curtain and a towel sprayed with calming pheromones may tick a box on paper, it did not demonstrate any meaningful cat-centred care in practice. I have submitted evidence and concerns to the accreditation body behind this recognition, who are now investigating the matter.

I have since moved my cat’s care to a practice in Dunscroft, and the difference has been remarkable. During our first visit, the vet spent nearly 20 minutes reviewing Dottie’s health records with us at no extra cost. This put us at ease, particularly around a heart murmur that had previously been presented as serious by Evolution, but was now described as so mild it would barely register a score of one.

Following my explicit request for Dottie’s records to be closed and for all communication to cease, I was disappointed to receive an unsolicited email from the practice regarding her vaccinations and an invitation to book her in. This communication was not only distressing but may also constitute a breach of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).

Under Article 17 (Right to Erasure) and Article 21 (Right to Object) of the UK GDPR, individuals have the right to request the deletion of their personal data and to object to its further processing, including direct communication. Continuing to contact me after a clear instruction to cease all correspondence is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about the practice’s compliance with data protection legislation.

Poor practice and neglect

I'm giving 1 star because of the overall outcome to encounters.

Our cat had a broken leg and after an appointment with a vet we were give 3 options - wait it out, surgery to pin or amputate, or euthanasia. We had decided - before the end of that day - to book in for surgery to pin. After waiting nearly a week, maison dieu informed we will have to go through the vets we were referred to - they, however informed that maison dieu has not sent the referal when they told us they did. More concerning, they told us this required surgery within 2 day maximum. Because of this we had to get our cats leg amputated.

The vets themselves were amazing as was the lady that wears a dark blue nursing uniform.
This does not mean every other individual is at fault, but my cat suffered for longer than needed. Furthermore, it resulted in additional costs even though we openly told them at the time we were financially struggling.

Today we had a stray cat that was not in a good way - it had got into our house and hid upstairs. The cat needed a vet so I called maison dieu to explain and I was told if I took it in then I would need to pay. I explained that it is not my cat and I do not have the money - mainly due to still paying my own cats medical bills. I called the RSPCA who confirmed that this was not the case and encouraged me to take the cat to a vet. I called maison dieu again and was quickly put on hold. The call was cut off - this may have been my mobile signal? I tried to call back but it just rang through with no answer. I then called Vets for Pets who i must say we're amazing, they explained everything and accepted the cat who was not in a good way - needed antibiotics, pain management and ongoing care. They did what you would hope a vetinary practice would - thank you.

All I can truly say is that it is such a shame that some really amazing vets and nurses have to work for such a poor practice.

We have moved to Vets for Pets - just wish I had done it earlier.

Low rate :Purely on the pricing

Low rate :Purely on the pricing.

The veterinary care was good but the local practice has sold out to become a profit making business. I live in the Gt Yarmouth area which is not an affluent part of the country. The nearest private practice is well out of town.
Animals will pay the price as many owners really can’t afford the fees! Is it ethical to overcharge for medicines and similarly charge for a consultation fees before any treatment. You can be steered to unnecessary interventions and have to be savvy, but without medical insight people will agree to investigate fully which does clock up the price.
There was a wonderful vet in our town he would always means test his fees, his practice is now CVS controlled. Where’s the compassion in veterinary medicine now. Even some of the insurers are under the same big business control.

OMG I wish we’d read these reviews…

OMG I wish we’d read these reviews before taking our poor cat there. We didn’t realise CVS owned the surgery. I agree with all the negative comments about no compassion and extortionate prices. We had to wait until 8.30am to ring when they opened having being up all night, watching her as she convulsed. Told they couldn’t see her until 11.am and then while my husband waited in the waiting room with a barking dog, she was so scared she messed herself and was sick. She didn’t get seen for about 40 minutes and then when she was taken away they gave her a sedative to calm her down then brought her back to my husband to say goodbye, before administering the final dose she’d already gone.

What infuriates me more is that we were given an envelope which we opened a couple of days later and apparently her body was taken to Durham for cremation and we had the privilege of choosing to decide what kind of cremation we would like, all costing more money of course.
They are just cashing in on people’s grief, we are not stupid enough to believe she was taken to Durham from Scarborough and would receive her ashes back if we were willing to pay.
They need exposing for the absolute …….. they are.

No compassion for animals!

Only interested in money, failed to provide any treatment, just wanted to do pointless tests and charge extortionate prices. Then told my dog had sepsis only to find he was dosed up on methadone. Luckily I chose to take him home and a few hours later other than recovering from what ever bug he picked up was bright as a button. Few days later back out on our long walks. £3500 they charged me to not even provid appropriate care and treatment and then when I asked for proof of what I was charged for they cut me off and refused to treat any more of my pets. This company seriously needs investigating.

Our little 18month old cat had a bill of £6000.

Our little 18month old cat had treatment off and on for three weeks for an illness they couldn’t identify , until it was too late , around 4 visits to the vet , multiple different blood test , a scan of her tummy and a ct scan at the end which found she had fip, I know she couldn’t have survived it, the vets was really good , but I felt like they thought I was imagining it , I also know it’s hard to diagnose, but what a shock, when in the end I paid £6000. Prices are ridiculous, I’ve been with this practice for many years , but when you took over , say no more , no wonder there are so many neglected pets, and the homes are full, I do not have insurance, as I have multiple pets , and try and save to pay the fees, I am not complaining about the practise just the prices . Ridiculous.

This company has no compassion. Only see pound signs with any animal. Don't care. There are experienced vets but the boss / Manager in my local vet does not practice as a vet. What does that tell you.animals not looked at. I myself seen it for myself. My cat who was in there pet club. The drugs they gave me for my cat for worms ticks etc I could buy for far less than the monthly pet club I was in. It should always about the animals welfare but now the company put money signs first.

Absolutely awful

Absolutely awful, you never get to see the same vet and every vet has a different opinion of what maybe wrong. The fees are extortionate and at times when calling your waiting for someone to answer and the phone is put down on you. (This happened today, twice) CVS group owned vets are horrific, if there was any other option to go somewhere else we would. The fact that no one has been answered on here about the negative comments, shows just how much they care. Why oh why has our government allowed this to happen, I will never know, just being screwed over like any other service in this country.

We had a lovely local for the last 30 years, then all of a sudden it was taken over by CVS what a nightmare! I took our elderly cat Basil who is 16 with a bad eye with consultation fee a small tube of eye drops and 3ml of Meloxicam the bill was £132! I said HOW MUCH she said well thats the cost and I said well dont expect to see me back again! Booster vaccination £71 at our new vets I paid £39 nearly half the price CVS are taking the Mickey somewhat, you won't be getting rich from me! If I could you no stars I would!

I'm still waiting!

Dog had a full blood test on 16th May costing £230 plus consultation costs taking it to just short of £30. Today (24th May). after chasing them twice, I am still waiting for a vet to ring me with the results! Appalling service.

Never happened when it was
independently owned. I have used them since 1996 and never have I had such a cavalier attitude towards pet treatment.
