When I took out a funeral plan there were no just cremation plans around. When they became more popular I wished that I could have one of those. I contacted golden charter and explained, they said I could change over my plan if I wanted to. I said I would like to do that and that I wouldn’t expect any money back as this policy is cheaper than the original one. I had a phone call from a very nice gentlemen who told me how to swap over and that I would get money back. Within a fortnight my new plan documents had arrived and the money repaid was in the bank. I cannot praise them enough in dealing with this, so professionally and quickly.

Wanted to get a plan in place so telephoned about it, got a professional but yet friendly gentleman to talk through different plans etc. Decided on which plan I wanted and now feel relieved I've actually got it all organised leaving my children with nothing to arrange. Very happy with Golden Charter

What they advertise isn’t always the case. Nearest funeral director to where we stayed wanted an extra £1500 to deliver the basic package. We had option to cancel or pay the extra £££. I asked Golden Charter who does the basic package local to us for that price. 10 miles away from where we are based. We went with it because my relative didn’t want to pay any more money. Afterwards I was bombarded with spam calls for weeks. Mentioned it to a work colleague who said funnily enough their Dad had recently done the same and they were experiencing a lot of spam calls too. Otherwise it’s been fine. Obv I can’t comment if what happens when we need to put the policy into practice, hopefully it will be event free.

My father took out a plan many years ago for a funeral. In later life he was adamant he wanted a simple crematorium. All his other family and friends had already passed or were on the other side of the world.
I honoured my father's request and was told by the undertaker that golden charter no longer refund the difference, while I was booking his cremation.
They said families were booking cheaper funerals to pocket the difference so Golden Charter now just keep the money. Can you imagine being told that after losing a loved one.
Cost just over half of what my dad paid. Great earner for them.

I have altered this review, basically written when it wasn't clear to me. Now, I have understood the process better, this is how it is- you are buying a policy that only covers the funeral directors costs, and a 'proportion of the other costs'. I do not think this was clear to my mother as she said she had 'paid for her funeral'. No, it's only guaranteed to cover the funeral director's costs. This does not necessarily cover all cremations costs, the crematorium, flowers, photo reflection, web-broadcasting, and definitely not a contribution to post-funeral tea. There are pages and pages of T&C's, and it uses language such as 'disbursements' , which is not a common term. If you are buying one of these, you have only a partial piece of mind. In my view the plan she bought is not as transparent as they should be, and I believe it led my mother to think it was "all dealt with". We did buy some extra's and knew they would cost extra, however, we didn't expect the crematorium costs not to be fully covered. The word 'disbursement' should be defined as what it may include or most likely exclude. I will save for my own funeral.

UPDATE:- As people can see from the reply to the review Golden Charter have given their standard response we are already in the process of raising the complaint formally and will then go down the route of raising it with the financial ombudsman if not satisfied. As they are regulated by the FCA. I will post further updates to progress of the complaint for people to be aware.
Two years ago my mother in law passed away and my partner and her sister sorted all of the funeral with the funeral director.
With their Mum and Dad having taken out Golden Charter Funeral Plans several years ago they all knew there would be additional costs to pay as not everything was covered, and therefore never really looked into it properly and paid the difference. Just to clarify this is not anything to do with the funeral director and 100% relates to the Golden Charter Plans they were sold actually covering different things to what was put in writing,
This has only been discovered as my father in law passed away last month and my partner has clarified some points in more detail this time and has items provided in writing by Golden Charter at time of sale to being actually the case.
BEWARE and if you're looking at funeral plans with relatives or family members make sure to clarify costs fully. I think it's a classic case of miss-selling and we will be taking this further.

Wishing to take out a pre-paid funeral plan for my wife, I looked at various companies and options. Although Golden Charter were not the cheapest, I felt that there plan covered all my needs.
I spoke to Tracey who helped me and discussed all the various questions that I had relating to the cover and a plan was set up with a local Undertaker.
I can only recommend their service as being very professional.

Purchased a plan in 2019, wanted a second, but there was a £600 shortfall when I chose my preferred funeral director. Apparently this is because there is a £300 arrangement fee, and £300 for a marketing fee. Now arranging direct with the funeral director. Be aware that not all you pay goes to the funeral director. It's worth checking with them first.

3months and still no pack, i.e., breakdown of what we paid for, they claim to have sent it and blame Royal Mail, our friends have been waiting 6 months, to help, I offer to pay for recorded delivery, and they said it can't be done?
As efficient as our UK border controls imo.

Paid £7000 for a plan chose family undertaker and 5 years later they changed our choice of undertaker asked for our money back lost £500 and 5 years interest our undertaker of choice is still trading no Explanation other than they have chosen not to use them be ware I'm in the process of reporting them to the ombudsman.

Contacted Golden Charter, and spoke to Paul Dugan who explained everything I needed to know about the funeral plans. The customer service was very helpful and thoughtful, with friendly advice and no pressure at all. My mind is at ease now.

Questions were responded to swiftly and directly in a polite and professional manner. If you want to fix your costs this is the way to go as all the hassle and arrangements are taken care of without fuss or bother for family members.
