A huge thank you to the Impulse Travel team and all its local partners! While I'm staring out the window at windy snowy weather right now, I'm reminiscing often about last month's trip in Colombia, my 4th time with Impulse!

As one who designed and led small group trips for many years, I know well how much goes into planning, preparing and facilitating travel experiences, particularly those intended to yield beneficial impacts for local communities; micro-entrepreneurs, small business owners, and employees; our planet; and the hearts and minds of travelers. My traveling companions and I saw, heard and continue to appreciate all the individual and collective efforts by Impulse for our time in Bogota, Medellin and Cannua Lodge. The many stories, intense conversations with people such as Harold, Raul, ADP, Carolina, Santi and Juliana; knowledge sharing; excellent logistics management; fresh and delicious Colombian foods; and laughter and hugs provoked feelings and insights that will stay with us for a very long time to come.

Our time in Colombia could not have come at a more opportune moment. Impulse’s unwavering commitment to local partners, guides and spaces for historical context, multiple narratives and human connections continues to be an inspiration. As the myriad challenges at home and abroad continue to unfold and grow, we know that our hopes, voices and actions must be a part of them. Onward!

During a trip to Bogota I had the opportunity to experience several tours with Impulse Travel that dove into the food, music, and peace agreement - all connected to the local communities affected by it all. I have traveled around the world and these tours left me feeling the most connected to the people than all the previous tours I have done. How? The guides' hearts and arms were wide open. I teach a short program study abroad at the University of Cincinnati. In the class, the students work in groups to create a social entrepreneurship business plan to solve a social issue in Colombia. The student group travels to Bogotá during spring break to learn about the city and to investigate their hypotheses in forming their social business.
We have worked with Impulse Travel for three trips to Bogotá. The first one was a planning trip where Impulse Travel helped me find the right mix of cultural experiences that would give the students exposure to aspects of Bogotá that would enhance their social business plans (and experience Colombia). Then, in 2023 and in 2024, I brought the students to Bogotá. The program constructed by Impulse Travel was an awesome mix of experiences to show the social needs in Bogotá, the culture of Colombia, and the immersion that we look for in a study abroad.
Our hotel was in Mercure Bogotá Bh Retiro
Calle 80 #10-11 -- this was an awesome location -- it was close to restaurants and shopping and safe for the students to go out to dinner together.
Our experiences ranged from social program in Barrio Egypto -- seeing the breaking boarders tour and the foundation workshops -- The students rated this experience as one of the best of the week. To cultural programs (riding bikes on Sunday down Calle Septima with all of the locals and The fruit tour at Paloquemao Market) which was both a cultural experience and an outstanding selection of foods (fruits and Colombia traditions). To traditional (the Coffee Farm Experience). These and so much more gave the students an immersion into Colombian life and helped the students to produce outstanding business plans based on the realities that they saw in Colombia.
Impulse Travel and our guide, Gigio, were important partners in planning and executing this educational and fun experience for the students.

Tourism Cares is the leading U.S. based travel industry nonprofit and we worked with Impulse Travel for over 2 years to develop and execute our Meaningful Travel Summit in 2021. They were not only extremely professional in planning and executing all logistics but their commitment to community based tourism and economic empowerment through their social enterprise business model is transformative for locals and guests alike. Rodrigo's network of passionate and talented people made our program more impactful than we could have imagined. Impulse is a new Local DMC partner for us in Colombia that we have been working with for our custom and private expeditions. They have been great to work with, and super responsive which is very important when working with a DMC.

Specifically, Juliana, Gregorio, and Adrian led a fantastic "Sounds of Colombia," 12 day excursion that our students are still talking about. Impulse delivered 200% more than we expected. Every day was a feast for the senses--filled with music and dance. Our experience included meeting popular, indigenous, and hip-hop artists in their natural settings. The Impulse team is very organized, professional, and easy to work with. We fell in love with Medellin and Cartagena--the people and the food.
