My initial enquiry was made to “Poplar Plumbing,” which appears to have been redirected to JAR Mechanical. That is misleading -- the company is presenting itself as a local provider when it is not.

I instructed JAR to attend on Friday 30 January 2026 to: (a) replace an extractor fan; (b) check that radiators were functioning; and (c) resolve drainage issues affecting a bathtub and sink.

Their engineer wasn't able to complete the job because he had attended without the necessary equipment (a long snake drain, which I would expect to be in a plumber's toolkit in any event). They then invoiced me £342.00.

I was told that a return visit could take place the following day if I paid the invoice and a further £485.00. They refused to explain this figure, even though the only outstanding issue was a blocked drain. After I challenged this, the price was reduced to £90 + VAT.

After I left a negative review on Trustpilot, they threatened me that they would not return to complete the work unless I removed it. That was completely inappropriate.

I was desperate to get the bath draining, so I paid the invoice and deleted the review. Their engineer failed to show up as arranged on Saturday morning, and I was unable to contact anyone at the company by telephone or email so had to wait around at home until I gave up.

When an engineer eventually attended, he remained for less than an hour and showed me photographs of some hair removed from the drain. I confirmed by email that it looked as if the bath was draining normally. However, within a week, the bathtub was again not draining, indicating that the issue was not properly resolved.

As a result, I now need to instruct another plumber to complete the work. Meanwhile, JAR Mechanical are harassing me for payment of their £90 + VAT bill even though they didn't finish the job properly.

We needed leaky pipework replaced as part of making a house safe for an elderly relative to allow her to return home from hospital. JAR came up with a quick an efficient solution and were very appreciative of our predicament. They provided a very friendly and professional service.

£6,000 quote for a leak fixed by a different company on the same day for £150

Rafal attended my property to assess a leak on one of the radiator valves I had identified. No repair was carried out during the visit, but I was charged £114 for providing a quote. I did not request a boiler service unless it was directly related to the leak, which is reflected in the recording.

The quote provided by Rafal to resolve the issue was £5,000–£6,000.

I subsequently had the same leak repaired by a different company on the same day for under £150. The issue was straightforward and could have been resolved during the initial visit.

Rafal later suggested I find another engineer, noting that they would likely provide a different quote. The issue was then resolved for £150, compared to the £5,000–£6,000 "estimate" provided by Rafal.

It is also worth noting that a boiler service should not typically be carried out when there is a known leak.

I would avoid.

While we appreciate your input, we maintain that the charges for the services rendered are fair and accurate. We believe your comments regarding our conduct are unjustified and find such feedback unreasonable.

Gas leak solved quickly

Jason visited my house today after a gas leak was detected and was excellent with deducing the exact problem and implementing the solution for it quickly. His explanations were clear and I am confident in using JAR in the future again and absolutely recommend them to others.

Wasted my time
