Permanent Ban, No Due Process, Toxic Leadership

My experience with Handshake AI was one of the most abrupt, harmful, and professionally disturbing experiences I have had with any company.

Handshake AI permanently terminated my account over alleged LLM use and treated the decision as final. The issue was not only the accusation itself, but the complete lack of fair process. While I was actively working on tasks, my access to projects, Slack, company email, and the platform was suddenly removed without notice, warning, meaningful explanation, or any real opportunity to clarify, respond, or correct anything. I was also removed from multiple projects at once, including one I had not recently worked on, which made the decision feel arbitrary and disproportionate.

I explained in detail that my workflow involved using textbooks, math references, forums, search engines, and software only to verify originality, avoid duplication, ensure accuracy, and gather ideas before writing my own original prompts and solutions. I also explained that this general approach had been discussed in meetings and Slack and was, to the best of my understanding, considered acceptable. That explanation was never meaningfully addressed.

The deeper problem was the environment behind the decision. Over months, I experienced what I viewed as selective enforcement, double standards, favoritism, and deeply unprofessional conduct from parts of the Math Lead structure. Some lead members were dismissive or unresponsive when clarification was needed. One lead member repeatedly communicated with me in an interrogatory and accusatory way while refusing to answer my own legitimate questions. I also described seeing the same type of conduct later alleged against me committed by a close friend of a lead member, yet that person continued working without termination. In my view, that is not fair policy enforcement. That is selective enforcement based on personal preference.

I also observed serious integrity problems in the task and review process itself. Repetitive low-quality prompts appeared to continue without consequence, weak one-line reviews were treated as acceptable, and what looked like collusive behavior in task creation and claiming seemed to deprive others of fair access. When batches of tasks are created and then claimed within seconds by friends on the lead team, it becomes very difficult to believe the process is impartial.

The harm was not only professional. The sudden termination caused emotional, moral, professional, and financial harm to me and my family. Handshake AI had become my main source of income, and my access was cut while work was still active. Submitted work and partially completed tasks were left unresolved. After termination, I felt ignored rather than treated with professionalism or basic respect. Requests for clarification were not meaningfully answered.

What made the experience even worse is that this did not feel isolated. Friends of mine at Handshake AI reported similar concerns about discrimination, selective treatment, weak leadership culture, and unfair handling of specialists.

I brought years of university teaching, tutoring, and academic content experience to Handshake AI and invested serious effort into both task creation and review. Instead of fair treatment, I was left with the impression that specialists can be permanently banned without meaningful due process, based on the judgment of leadership whose fairness, consistency, and integrity are, in my view, open to serious question.

In my view, the only meaningful way to begin addressing these concerns would be for Handshake AI to reverse the unfair permanent ban on my account and issue a written apology for the moral, emotional, professional, and financial harm caused to me and my family. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Handshake AI to specialists who expect transparency, consistency, due process, and professional respect.

Scammers & Manipulators - Stole $1500+

Worked around the clock for them & they stole over $1500 from me.

Have communicated with over 50 other workers who've also had their accounts frozen after hundreds to $2000 worth of work, Handshake Ai refuses to pay any of us, using lies as excuses or simply ignoring communication.

All of us had excellent scores, many of us, including myself were selected to be graders because of our high quality work. It happened to many graders in our chat at the same time.

They take advantage of hard workers and steal their money. DO NOT waste your time.

Dreadful

Dreadful. Do not use. As an employer trying to advertise a simple part time position local to our university from where we have previously employed many students successfully over the last decade Handshake has pretty much put paid to that.

OUTSTANDING STAFF

I still freelance with them. They are kind, helpful and understanding. I am always paid on time, and I'm paid very well.
It's too bad that those who had a bad experience couldn't find a better way than to slam them. They are hardworking, very intelligent group. and I like them so much I wanted to praise them for their role, their job, their kindness..... JOB VERY WELL DONE!

Scam

They monitor your tabs so even switching to YouTube Music to select a song will get your earnings wiped the day before payday. They advertise a flexible, remote job and yet their website is riddled with bugs. I did several hours of work and was never paid.

Accepted work, then blocked contract/payment — looks sloppy and shady

Handshake allowed me to complete a task that was accepted, and then blocked the only step that matters: contract/payment onboarding.

I was directed to a project (after being contacted on LinkedIn), did the work, submitted it, got accepted — and when I tried to continue to get paid and access more tasks, I hit an error. Only then did it become clear there was a USA-only contracting restriction that wasn’t made obvious upfront.

This is unacceptable platform hygiene. Eligibility restrictions should be displayed loudly before anyone starts, and the system should prevent submissions from people who can’t legally/technically be onboarded.

The end result: wasted time, frustration, and a process that looks legit until it doesn’t. Trust is everything for gig/work platforms, and this experience seriously damaged it.

Published a job opportunity entry level Bookkeeeping.Terrible response from candidates most were clearly were not qualified. Most applicants were more concerned about pronouns then a career! Handshake made it next to impossible to cancell the service! Kept on billing! Had to dispute charges and lock credit card used for there service!

Handshake is one of the worst platforms…

Handshake is one of the worst platforms I have ever been forced to engage with. It is marketed to students and graduates as a career tool, yet in reality, it functions as a data trap that makes it exceedingly difficult for users to control or delete their personal information.

From a GDPR perspective, this company is a disaster. The right to erasure is a fundamental principle of data protection law, yet Handshake goes out of its way to obscure, delay, and complicate this process. Rather than providing a clear, straightforward means of deleting an account and personal data, they bury users in circular help pages, vague instructions, and unresponsive support. This is not a minor inconvenience—it is a blatant disregard for legal requirements and user rights.

The result is that individuals are left in limbo, with sensitive data sitting indefinitely on a system they no longer wish to be part of. For a company operating across Europe and the UK, this behaviour is inexcusable and potentially unlawful. It demonstrates either wilful negligence or outright contempt for the GDPR framework.

Beyond the privacy failures, the platform itself is clunky, unhelpful, and riddled with poor design choices. Instead of empowering students, it locks them into a system that primarily benefits institutions and recruiters, not the individuals whose data fuels it.

Beware of Unauthorized and Misleading Charges

I had an incredibly disappointing experience with Handshake due to unauthorized recurring charges totaling over $2,000.00. At no point did I knowingly agree to or utilize their Handshake Plus subscription service. When confronted, their customer support provided dismissive responses, refused refunds, and offered minimal assistance. The cancellation process is unclear and intentionally misleading, causing customers to inadvertently incur charges.

This experience has significantly damaged my trust in Handshake, and their unwillingness to rectify this issue promptly is deeply concerning. I strongly caution potential customers to closely monitor any interactions with this service and be aware of their subscription policies. Handshake’s customer support and billing practices are severely lacking in transparency and integrity.

This platform is a scam

This platform is a scam. Shame on my college for using them for their "career center." I created a job seeker profile via my college's handshake account and have gotten nothing but inquiries from illiterate hiring agents. It's been over a year and that is all I have had. Just scam after scam. I asked my school to delete my profile and assumed they did but it's still there so I'm guessing it's also being used to data mine. Absolute trash scam.
