I leased a £2,000 piece of equipment in a desperate situation—recovering from injury, van broken down, struggling to keep the business going. The leasing sounded straightforward, but I ended up paying over £3,500—rent, documentation fees, compulsory insurance, and a final title transfer charge. Roughly 80–100% APR, if you do the math.

I wasn’t expecting to be caught in such a costly arrangement. The insurances, paperwork, and “peppercorn” fee felt hidden until too late. They’re happy to say “you signed the terms,” but that doesn’t help when you were just trying to survive.

I won’t use or recommend them again—small businesses deserve better transparency.

“Thanks for your reply, but my point still stands: I only took this lease out for 12 months and still ended up paying around £3.5k for a £2k piece of equipment — the same as others who were tied in for five years. That makes it even worse value in my situation, and no amount of small-print explanation changes that.”

We have leased a Coffee machine of Kennet and have just made the final payment. I feel leaving an honest review is the appropriate action for the service we have received as it’s been sub par at best.

When received the quote from Kennet, the quote reads as if the cost of the equipment is £4560, the total cost of the finance is £5,91.28 but there is tax relief at 19% and a net cost of finance as £4796.24

However this is quite far from the truth. We only found out that insurance was added unnecessarily to this (as we have our own contents insurance) and that Kennet implies that insurance MUST be had on the machine. We spent months arguing the fact we already have the insurance and the only positive I can pull from this whole agreement with Kennet is that stacey worked very hard to negate this insurance cost after us explaining we didn’t need it. However, it was paid for approx 18 months and there was very little back pay.

We have now come to the end of our agreement after an initial rental cost, documentation fee (£143 + VAT), 23 months payments + insurance and now we have received an email asking for a further £296.06 to transfer ownership. This is a coffee machine, not a car or house so feels to me as if it’s just another excuse to take another payment from us.

So from what we initially understood to be a £4796.24 (on their quote) would have cost us in total £8125. When you speak to these guys, they will tell you all of this is in their T&C’s but they certainly were not discussed when we initially called to get a quote.

Check your conditions, look for hidden charges. I don’t agree with these predatory business tactics. We won’t be using Kennet again.
