If there was zero star rating, that is what I would rate they just charge me twice they snatched all my money over drew my account by $557 speaking to MNT. Customer service is a nightmare they’re nasty they don’t care that they just snatched all your money and overdrew your account on a double charge an authorization that is ridiculous but you’ll get your money back in 7 to 10 days how ridiculous and nasty. I am so pissed off stay away from this company. The criteria to work at M&T BANK is to be an uncaring pass the Buck specialist I’m so disgusted

A SCAMMING BANK , I REGRET PUTTING MY MONY TOO MUCH STRESS INVOLVED.
IT LOCKED MY MONEY WHEN I TRAVELLED I WAS HELPLESS WHEN I NEED TO USE IT.
I WROTE ABV NAM ERESCUED MEFROM THEIR CROOKED DEN.

This is the worst bank I have ever dealt with in 65 years of banking. Their internal security procedures have holes you can drive a truck through. for example, they allowed someone who had hacked my account to establish a Zelle account ( I hadn't previously) and was creating numerous transactions that sent money to the crook's Zelle account in Texas. They rejected initial attempts for small amounts to the crook's phone number but then started to allow larger amounts through. Eventually (ten days after the first attempt) they called me to ask if another large amount was OK and I obviously said I don't use Zelle. To their credit and because it was fraud versus a scam, they reversed the transactions. I had to go to a branch to get all new accounts which I understand. Amazingly though they failed to remove the crook's Texas phone number from my profile and it was associated with my new accounts as well! Many other less dramatic examples too such as closing my ATM card before I received it after I properly authenticated my wife's card. Again, they apologized and said I would have to go to a branch to get a new card. I also bank with TD Bank and Ally and have never had a problem with either. Avoid if you can.
EXTREMELY SLOW Account Balance Updates
This bank is by far the slowest with posting transactions from my account. I could have bills paid right when I pay them, showing receipt of payment from whoever I pay them to... only to be show the update in my account summary MANY days later. This is HORRIBLE! Even with my weekly autopay service I use with AutoPayPlus, the funds won't show having come out of my direct deposits until the day after payday! This is absolutely insane and has cost me many weeks of substantial overdrafts and negative account balances. M&T: YOU need to get your act together or I will find another bank!
Bank is stuck in 80's
Bank is stuck in 80's. Do not use this bank if you travel or us Zelle. They do not like either one and think it is fraud. This is a great bank to take your roll coins to. They even offer roles. Also good if you like to visit with the bank staff. Do not use this bank for anything other than old school checks and to take your change to. I remember christmas clubs here as well.
They won't let me use my money!
I deposited a check into my account. I expected them to hold the check for 7-10 buisness days. I wouldn't have minded. But instead they locked my whole account. I have no access to the other money in my account. And I don't have a lot of money. I need the money I have in the account! And no one has any empathy. And no one can give me a decent answer that explains why the whole account has to be locked. All they can say is "is just how it's done." And that is not an explanation! They have access to my finance information and can see I have no money. I can't live without use of my little bit of money. And obviously they don't care. It's a easy as calling the other bank. I have received these checks before that my other bank deposited. I sent my invoice! And they can't even tell me how long it takes!

Worst customer service I've ever experienced. I believe we shouldn't reveal the card number to anyone. Nevertheless, I was prompted to share. Instead, I consented to sharing the account number. Additionally, details such as the most recent deposit amount made to your account. After receiving all of this information, I was instructed to visit the closest branch to settle my problem. Pathetic system for customer verification. If a support representative is asked to repeat their inquiry, you may also tell that they are irritated by the request.
Great bank...6 years and counting
I have been with M&T Bank for almost 6 years. I have found every single person I have worked with professional and helpful.
I have M&T loans, checking, savings and credit cards. Never an issue. I also personally know of many others who also use M&T and have never had an issue. I was shocked when I saw the negative reviews!
Poorly marketed and misrepresenting to consumers
M&T’s comparison of their checking accounts is written and was explained to me that there are no overdraft fees, no minimum deposit activity requirements, free activity alerts, and if your account is overdrawn less than $5, they’ll pay it and you have 24-hours to bring your account to current by 8pm the next day. In reality, they do charge overdraft fees, they linit how many they will refund, their alerts are not in real-time, they count debits before credits no matter when you fund your account, and label overdraft fees as charges by your biller, not them. I’m not surprised reading here that they are ripping off our veterans on active duty, also. Appalled but not surprised! This is the only bank where I’ve made an ATM deposit that did not post to my account and required an investigation to credit me my money. I’d rather donate $15 to a veteran supporting non-profit than pay these for-profit capitalists fees with the constraints they put on how much you can withdraw and limitations on the truth they disclose. Do not waste your money or time. Find a local bank that’s personable and values you.
Bank ANYWHERE ELSE (especially active-duty brothers/sisters)
TLDR: AVOID at all costs (Warning to fellow Active-duty military members as well) -- Outdated systems, Broken processes, Callous Customer Service & Inept Management:
1) My mortgage w/ United Wholesale (always on autopay) transferred to M&T
2) M&T sent us email confirmation my mortgage payment processed on 6/5/23
3) I get a credit alert 1 month later that M&T reported missed mortgage payment and credit score drops 85 points (I always had a 810+ credit score and have NEVER missed a mortgage payment) whereas M&T NEVER informed us the payment didn't get processed properly
4) M&T Customer service passes me to 3 different people and finally waives late fee after haggling but does NOT address credit report issue, puts me on hold to speak w/ their 'manager'

Useless, no help, permanently on hold, unfair overdrafts that are never rectified, incompetent staffing, impossible to actually speak to a human and when you do it's always filibusters and the run around. I'm done with this bank. Closing my account for good. Never open an account here unless you enjoy needless complications and exponential stress

Terrible bank, if you’re going to buy out peoples Bank, be ready to do it. you have screwed up everything that possibly could be screwed up. 20 meetings later over seven months. Still not fixed. I’ve wasted so much of my time and I’m done. It’s really too bad because peoples Bank was excellent and we never had a problem.
I'm a military member
I'm a military member, when deployed M&T bank blocked my card and online account. M&T bank told me I have to step into the branch to unblock the card and account. I explained my circumstances of being out of the country, yet still no one would assist me. If you are a military or even a person who travels often I do not recommend this bank. I will not continue or refer any banking at this institute.

I've noticed in the three years of having an account with M&T bank, that the more money that is in the account and if deposits are frequent and scheduled, is the Only time account balance is kept up to date and in real time. But, if it's not a type of direct deposit or is below a few thousand, then suddenly the bank cannot seem to keep track of account summary and it will take days for updates. Allowing you to overdraft and charge you for their convenient mistake. Knowing that everyone is excessively reliant on the imposed necessity of digital technology to pay for everything, even people surviving below the poverty line are required to have a checking account, but M&T seems to be favoring profitable accounts at the expense of the poor. Shame on you for taking advantage of the disadvantaged in small, struggling communities.

I really tried to give this bank a shot. About a year ago my bank I had been with for 20 years was acquired by M&T. I have had nonstop issues, getting declined at my local grocery stores every single time. My fraud alerts come hours later and only to have me call. Today I actually received the alert at the time of trying to purchase, I called, got redirected 3 times, all while standing at the register. Put on hold for 10 minutes, to be told to take money out of an ATM before I shop so this won’t happen. Excuse me, what!? I have had it with M&T, I will be taking my business and money elsewhere. Do yourself a favor and choose another bank if you are considering M&T.

Dishonest and unethical
Terrible service from this bank/lender. The customer service lied to me repeatedly almost every single time I had to call them. Upon paying off our loan, even after the final payment was taken from my bank, M&T refused to give me any sort of proof of payoff. My access to the app and the website was removed "because the account was closed". Yet they refused to email me any proof of payoff. I was in the process of buying a new RV and trading the old one (we just paid off) in, and M&T made me wait 10 business days before they would snail-mail my proof of payoff. Then an issue that was partially my fault, I had forgotten to cancel my auto-pay from my bank. So after payoff, an additional payment was accidentally sent to M&T through ACH. I called M&T immediately, they said I had to wait until the payment cleared. Once it cleared, I called back. I asked them to send that payment back through ACH. The representative said they would do what they could. A week later, no refund, so I called back. I was then informed that they usually send any kind of refund back through snail mail, but would check to see if it could be sent back through ACH seeing that is how they received it. They put me on hold for a few minutes. When they returned they said they could do it by ACH and that I should have it in a few days. A week and a half later, still no refund. I called again. This time they said there was some sort of misunderstanding and that the ACH was processed that morning, and that I should have it in 3 days. 5 days later, I called my bank to see if it was pending. My bank saw nothing. I called M&T again. This time they told me that they don't send refunds by ACH and that a paper check was mailed out 2 days ago. Today I finally got a refund check. Almost a month after the initial call for a refund. And the check is dated the day of the final phone call.

My PERSONAL and SECURED information was taken by M&T Bank employees (Genesee St, Utica, NY) and used for their personal gain. I have the proof and I’ve contacted M&T Bank twice to file a formal complaint and request an investigation. NO ONE has even attempted to contact me regarding this matter.
