I have worked with RL Labs over the years and they have always been wonderful. Everyone is knowledgeable in their field and will walk you through the process with patience. I always feel like they genuinely care. This last time I needed my sauce tested for an inspector and I needed a rush on it. The first person I spoke with was Alison, she immediately put me in touch with Maria. I can't say enough how much I appreciate Maria and how amazing her customer service is. I also would like to thank Sharon for helping get the certification out so quickly. You guys are great !!!

I reached out to RL Food Testing to ask whether they could help interpret shelf-life testing results once my third-party lab data was complete. Maria initially responded that they could assist in estimating a “best by” date, provided that the appropriate testing was done and an NDA was in place — which I had already reviewed.

From the start, I politely stated that I preferred to communicate via email for clarity and documentation. Despite this, Maria called me again anyway and then left a voicemail asking me to call her back — disregarding the communication preference I clearly expressed as a potential client.

Shortly after I reiterated my request to continue by email, she abruptly reversed her earlier position and stated the service was now “outside of scope,” without explanation. It felt less like a true scope issue and more like a reaction to not having her preferred communication method followed.

As a small food business owner, it was disappointing to feel like my boundaries weren’t respected and that a service offer was withdrawn simply because I wanted to communicate in writing. I’ve since moved forward with a more collaborative and flexible lab, and I’d encourage others — especially small producers — to confirm alignment on communication styles early when considering this lab.

Edit: in response to the comment below. I have provided Maria all the information needed and also included “ — or clarify what additional information would be helpful — I’d appreciate your input”
in my email but she just immediately dismissed and replied “it’s out of scope”. Also, I clearly requested to communicate by email only, but I continued to receive calls and voicemail messages instead. I understand some people prefer to speak by phone, but as a customer, I expected my preference to be respected — especially for a decision that impacts budget and timing. This added to my overall sense that the experience wasn’t collaborative.

Exactly what we hoped for

This was the first time I sent a product to a lab for analysis. The communication from query, to confirmation, to delivery of results was seamless. Pricing was fair and the results gave us a clear direction of where to take our product for development. I will definitely use their services again.

Being new to this industry, there were a lot of unknowns. Although I shopped around with other companies, most of the people I spoke with sounded like they wanted to do a quick sale rather than answer my questions. That was not the case with RL Food Testing. When I sent my inquiry Sharon took the time to thoroughly answer my questions and to educate me on what I was trying to do. The value I got from her advice went much further than anything I could have researched or any other company I had come in contact with before.
