I am extremely disappointed with the customer service I received at The Perfume Shop in Prospect Centre, Hull.
Yesterday I purchased a perfume costing £102. When I got home, I realised I had bought the wrong fragrance because I had mixed up the names. The perfume itself remained completely sealed and unopened, so I returned to the store the following day to ask for a refund.
The experience was very upsetting. As soon as I handed over the complimentary gifts, the salesperson opened the travel-size perfume and immediately accused me of having used it. I explained that I had never opened or used it – in fact, he was the one who opened it. Despite this, he continued to insist it had been used and told me that “for future” I couldn’t use the free gifts, implying that I had been dishonest.
He then repeatedly questioned why I was returning the perfume. I explained several times that I had simply bought the wrong fragrance by mistake. After disappearing into the back for several minutes, he returned and began questioning me about which perfume I had intended to buy. He even walked over with his iPad and tried to get me to identify and purchase the other fragrance there and then. When I said I wanted to go home, do some research and think about it, he questioned why I hadn’t already Googled it and even argued with me when I said the purchase had been an impulse buy, insisting that it wasn’t because I had spent around ten minutes with an assistant the previous day.
Throughout the entire refund process, I felt as though I was being interrogated rather than helped. I was made to feel that I had to justify my decision to return an unopened product. The salesperson also questioned whether I was returning it because of the money and insisted on examining my bank card before processing the refund.
Although he never directly called me a liar, that is exactly how I was made to feel. Being wrongly accused of using an unopened complimentary perfume and having my reasons for returning a sealed product repeatedly challenged was humiliating and unnecessary.
The refund was eventually processed, but it felt as though it was done very reluctantly. A straightforward return turned into an unpleasant and uncomfortable experience because of the salesperson’s attitude.
I have never been treated this way in a retail store before. Customer service should be polite and respectful, even when processing returns. I has always bought my perfumes from here but Unfortunately, this experience has completely put me off shopping at The Perfume Shop in future.

He struck exactly the right balance between being attentive and giving me space to make my own decision. He was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and clearly passionate about fragrances without ever making me feel pressured.
I'd actually been considering purchasing Spicebomb Extreme for a couple of months and had seen it available online for a lower price. However, Oliver's customer service, product knowledge and genuine interest in helping me find the right fragrance convinced me to buy it in store instead.
He also recommended a couple of other fragrances that suited my tastes exceptionally well, and I wouldn't hesitate to return for his advice in the future.
A thoroughly pleasant, professional young man who is a real credit to the store.

Perfume I loved so I decided to buy that one instead oliver was very helpful and knowledgeable

I was given impeccable service by a lovely young lady named Abbie .
She works in the Prospect Centre Store in Hull.
This was on 10th February 2025 at 15.52pm.
I would just like to say I'm an lady in my late 50s who has Adhd and Ptsd.
I find loud and busy shops overwhelming.
She made me feel at ease completely.
So much so, that I've promised to shop in person instead of online to help support the store.
I bought an e tra item from the shop as well as picking up my orders, thanks to her knowledge and support.
