Scam Report and Request for Investigation - Premium Ability and Affiliated Websites
On 17 August 2023, I attempted to access the live stream of a sport competition. The streaming service prompted me to register a credit card without providing any further details about the nature of the transaction. There was no mention of a recurring monthly subscription or the associated price of $59.99/month.
Upon registering, I received a confirmation email. However, I was unable to access the intended content. Realizing that I may have inadvertently signed up for a subscription, I immediately attempted to cancel my subscription through the provided link. Unfortunately, this link redirected me to an empty 404 "Page Not Found", rendering it impossible to cancel my subscription.
The scam orchestrated by this website is commonly referred to as a "subscription scam" or "subscription trap." It typically involves a deceptive offer where a website appears to be providing a free or very cheap product or service (ex: access to streaming video), but in reality, is designed to trick users into unknowingly agreeing to a costly monthly subscription that are almost impossible to cancel.
Premium Ability's modus operandi is the same on all its sites (Toneuptime.com, Exercise2health.com, Purelyprogress.com, Roomforchamps.com, Obtainthegain.com): users are invited to enter their bank details to unlock an online video or content. This action costs €1. What's not indicated anywhere (neither in the Terms & Conditions, nor in the confirmation email received), is that at the end of the 72-hour trial period, $59.99 are billed automatically, and on a monthly basis. Links to cancel subscriptions or direct debits systematically redirect to 404 pages. It is therefore impossible to cancel your subscription except by contacting the bank and cancelling your credit card.
Subscription traps or scams are considered illegal in many countries. They often involve deceptive marketing practices, hidden fees, or lack of proper disclosure about the terms of the subscription, which are all considered fraudulent activities.
I'm unfortunately not the only victim of this scam. The website toneuptime.com, among others affiliated with Premium Ability, has been reported on numerous scam-reporting sites and has garnered numerous negative reviews on TrustPilot.
As these sites are clearly harmful to consumer interests. I, therefore, contacted several organizations and regulatory bodies to investigate this matter thoroughly and take appropriate action to prevent further victimization by Premium Ability and its affiliated websites.
Here's the list of organizations and regulatory bodies I reported this scam too: Google, Microsoft, Cloudflare, the FTC, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Action Fraud (National Fraud & Cyber Crime Reporting Center), the UK European Consumer Centre (UK ECC), Europol, and the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) among others, to report their activities.
If you are also a victim of this scam, I invite you to reach out to your bank and contact these organizations to report these illegal activities. You can also write to the site's hosting service, which may also be able to disconnect them (here's how to find out where their site is hosted: type in Google Search "who is hosting this?" and enter the link of the site that scammed you)
Good luck.
