I am shocked with how terrible the customer service is with this company. I have spoken with Multiple customer service agents which give me a different answer on the status of my DNA kit. Spoke to supervisor who was useless and lied saying my kit failed and how I would have received a email. Yet also can not resend me this email. They said on the 5th of April my results were going through the quality check status and would be ready to view on my account on the 19th of April. I took screen shots to keep and have tried to make a complaint on their website and no one has emailed or called. This company seems like a scam and I will be shocked if I actually get my results. Paid for priority testing and that seems like a scam. I paid for tracking with the second test and was received in Ireland on the 24th of March and they said it is still not received yet another agent said it is received. How can they just lie and lie everytime you talk to them 😂 Worst then dealing with Telstra over the phone!

Horrible customer service

Purchased a kit in October 2025. In December I was notified it was ‘damaged in transit’ and sent a new kit which I sent back 22nd December 2025.
It’s now the end of February 2026 and despite being marked as Priority processing, it now says ‘Delayed’ and DNA is not even extracted. It has been 5 months!
Customer service is absolutely terrible. I have wasted hours on the phone with people reading off a script and their online chat is just as useless. Unbelievable that this company is still in business.

We're very sorry to hear about the delays you've encountered, Rebekah. We know that the wait for the results can be an anxious time, and being advised that a new kit is needed must be frustrating as well. From the date a kit is posted back to us, it should be marked as received within 40 working days at most. Following on from this, once a kit reaches our lab, the testing process itself usually doesn't take more than 6-8 weeks, and this processing timeframe can be even shorter when the Priority Processing add-on is purchased. Please note that Priority Processing does not impact the testing timeframe itself, which can vary from sample to sample, but moves your kit to the front of the queue as soon as it arrives at our lab. Please note, though, that our lab is currently experiencing a higher-than-usual volume of kits following the festive period, alongside some unexpected weather-related disruptions. We hope that this information helps to offer some clarification, but regardless, we'd be glad to log your feedback for you so your experience can be taken into consideration. We hope that you receive your results very soon and that your DNA journey can run smoothly from this point forward.

Beware! Not as straightforward as they make out

Beware!! Ancestry is very hard to navigate, it's confusing, takes you in all directions, and is not easy. With virtually no support from Ancestry. You will click on something then very likely won't be able to find it again. By no means straight forward. It's even worse when you get your DNA results back. OMG that's hard to read as well clicking on this box/section then another, then another clicking another direction. Results need to be set out so they are easy to read and see instead of having to go hunting for the details.

Getting ripped off by ansestry

I ordered 2 dna kits with traits etc in 2022, after about 8 months I was told the sample was too degraded so they sent 2 replacement kits same thing again couldn’t process the sample for whatever reason. Got 2 more replacement kits same again. Now 3.5 years on I’ve been told I’m out of time for a refund, I got offered a free membership to ansestry but I’m adopted so without dna it’s useless the ansestry site tells me nothing. So finally I had to ask for at least 2 more replacements but they only sent 1 and it’s the cheapest dna kit they have, I rung them again and they are sending the second kit but now I can only get the basic kit. I feel like I’ve been taken advantage of and ripped off. Getting the hopes up of adopted people is so low. I’m running out of time, my birth mother is dead and my child has a genetic illness I need answers and all ansestry has done get my hopes up and rip me off.

Hello Helen, we are truly sorry to hear about the difficulties you’ve faced with your DNA tests. We understand how important these results are to you, and we sincerely regret the frustration this has caused.

It is unusual for samples to fail multiple times, and we want to help you ensure this next attempt is successful. While the most common reason for failure is insufficient or contaminated DNA, you can find a full overview of why a sample may fail here: https://support.ancestry.com.au/s/article/Why-an-AncestryDNA-Sample-May-Fail-at-the-Laboratory

Regarding your kits, Ancestry offers one core DNA test for Origins and Matches. If you originally purchased the "DNA + Traits" bundle, that feature should be included in your replacements too. If it appears to be missing once you register the new kits, please contact our support team so we can review this for you.

To give your new samples the best chance of success, we recommend these specific steps:

- Try collecting your sample at a different time of day than your previous attempts.

- Brush your teeth or use mouthwash to clear your mouth. Then, wait 30–60 minutes (but no longer) before taking the test.

- Do not eat, drink, smoke, chew gum, or kiss anyone during that waiting period.

- Ensure the liquid saliva (not just bubbles) reaches the fill line. To help production, try gently rubbing your cheeks against your teeth and gums before spitting.

- If you cannot fill the tube at once, you can refrigerate the tube upright between attempts for up to a week before adding the stabilizing fluid.

Please note that while most medical conditions do not affect the test, it will not work for individuals who have received a stem cell or bone marrow transplant from another person. We also do not typically recommend the test for those with Down Syndrome due to potential difficulties with the analysis.

We truly hope these new kits provide the answers you are looking for. Please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team if you need further assistance during this process. Many thanks for taking part in AncestryDNA!

I have tried TWICE and waited over 5 months since my original test sample. First time they said I need to register my account before sending (so they threw away my sample). They then sent me a new one, to which I sent out again and made sure I registered, now 2 months later it says it hasn't even arrived with them. Just a poor quality experience and waste of time! Find an alternative who has sorted out their logistics. This company is as outdated as the ancestors I am trying to learn about.

Hiya Daniel, and thanks very much for getting in touch to share your feedback. We're sorry to hear of the wait you've encountered so far, and we're grateful for the opportunity to address your concerns.

We can confirm that every sample sent our way will need to be registered online with the 15-digit code included with the instructions. We ask our users to complete this process in order to tie their kits to their online account and provide us with permission to test the sample when it reaches us. A guide on how to register the kit online should be found in Step #1 within the instruction manual. If a kit reaches our lab and is not registered online first, then we will store the sample for several months to give our members the opportunity to complete the registration process. If a sample isn't registered after several months, then that sample will be destroyed due to privacy concerns.

We're glad to hear that you've received a new kit to repeat the process, though we regret to learn of any concerns about the status of your replacement. We advise that from the date a kit is posted back to us, it should be marked as received within around 40 working days at most. Following on from this, once a kit reaches our lab, the testing process is usually completed within about 6 weeks. You can find out more about our testing timeframes here: https://support.ancestry.com.au/s/article/AncestryDNA-Laboratory-Processing

We hope that this insight helps to offer some clarification, though we're grateful for your feedback, and we'd be happy to take this on board. Thanks again for getting in touch, and have a great day as well.

Don't waste your time & money - unreliable, which is scary!

If you're interested in paying in advance, waiting months & months without any results & no contact details/inability to make contact for follow up, but being hit with attempts to make you buy more rubbish meanwhile (really compelling sales approach when they've failed to deliver on the original promise or the updated timeframe!), this is for you. If you'd prefer a reasonably reliable DNA test with actual results and as promised, spend your money & time anywhere else.

Decent Product, Not Decent Fee Breakdowns, Shockingly Rude Customer Service

Yes, the DNA matching is great. I can't put a downer on that (WARNING - it takes at about 1 week for the kit to arrive then around 1.5-2 months for the results....so don't even bother with the "World Heritage Membership (for you) - A family history subscription, just $1 for the first 3 months* " it basically runs out before you can even use it. This trial also auto-renews, which I / the person who got it for me as a gift didn't realise / notice as they were ordering (it was not clear at all).

This one was charged to my card on boxing day and as you can imagine I was shocked. I spoke to "customer service" and all I got was cold and rude replies e.g. "As I mentioned earlier", "As mentioned earlier", referring to the conveniently not so obvious T&C's. I had mentioned that I would be making a complaint due to the hidden T&C's and an instant "let me refund that for you" was sent. Clearly this is something they come across quite frequently. Also when The DNA kit was purchased for me, there was always going to be access to data etc but now they have made it subscription based out of no where. I have checked on reddit and apparently this is a new thing that a lot of people aren't happy about.

If you know what you're getting in to with ancestry.com.au and if you're happy to spend the money, then I support the product. This is more a warning about making sure you check EVERYTHING before you get a kit for yourself or someone else.

"priority processing" - dont waste your money!

Feels like very deceptive marketing in my opinion RE: priority processing. Sent my sample - 4 weeks ago. Still they haven't received my sample. I paid for priority processing. Their operator tells me "Normally DNA sample will arrive in our lab between 40 business days timeframe since it will ship internationally. It includes scanning, sanitizing and ship it to our main laboratory to process. Since the sample is still within the time frame, no worries we will send you directly an email notifications and update your account status online." So they allow 8 weeks for shipping from Australia before they'll lift a finger to help you, then you are expected to wait another 4 weeks (if you paid priority, else another 6 weeks) to receive results. What kind of business is this.

Hello Kristy! We appreciate your feedback and are sorry for any misunderstandings about what to expect. Priority processing means that your sample will move to the front of the processing line at the lab, allowing you to receive your DNA results faster. However, priority processing doesn’t affect shipping timeframes, just the order in which a sample is processed once it arrives at the lab. You can learn more about this here:
https://support.ancestry.com.au/s/article/AncestryDNA-Priority-Processing

DNA kits from Australia are sent via post to Ireland and then on to our labs, which may take up to 40 working days.

We hope this information is clear and helpful. We also hope you have an interesting DNA experience once your results are ready!

Thank you for taking part in AncestryDNA, James!

Unfortunately, AncestryDNA isn't able to confirm a connection to a specific historical event dating back 900 years, such as the Norman Invasion of Ireland. However, your DNA Origins may show you where your ancestors lived, including regions within Ireland, Western Europe, or Scandinavia. It's important to remember that DNA is randomly inherited, so you may carry more or less DNA from certain ancestors. Our results focus on relatively recent ancestry—within the last 500 to 1,000 years—as this is the most useful for genealogical purposes and when searching for living relatives.

We truly appreciate you being part of AncestryDNA and wish you a continuously interesting experience!

Not what I expected.

After receiving the rest results it was not what I expected to get, very basic results & unfortunately there's no DNA link to AU Aboriginal which my grandfathers father was part Aboriginal so there should have been a ? For some DNA.
What was really annoying was it took 2 months to get to them yet the package is marked "Air mail" Post which is about 1 week max to Ireland from AUSTRALIA.

Thank you so much for taking part in AncestryDNA, Des.

We’re sorry to hear about any disappointment or misunderstandings regarding shipping. Our kits from Australia are first sent to Ireland and then on to our labs in the US. Typically, the analysis takes 6–8 weeks from when your sample arrives back with us.

We also wanted to let you know that we have a reference panel called "Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander" that we have tested your DNA against. However, it’s important to remember that your DNA only tells part of your story, based on the segments you have randomly inherited. Even if you have an Aboriginal ancestor some generations ago, you may not have inherited DNA from that person to show a match with the reference panel. This article explains why DNA ethnicity results may vary from what’s expected, including information about how DNA is inherited: https://support.ancestry.com.au/s/article/Unexpected-Ethnicity-Results

Finally, Your DNA results are a powerful tool for discovering more about your history, and we want to help you get the most out of them. We recommend checking out the webinar below for tips and tricks on how the service can be used:
