Either dishonest or incompetent
My Land Rover had battery issues last month and we took it in to Autobahn Land Rover Fort Worth to get it fixed. In addition to replacing the battery they told me that the coolant outflow manifold was cracked and that it would cost $4000 to fix it and replace the water pump while they are in there. We were having no cooling issues at the time. Just six weeks earlier I had the car in for yearly service which was supposed to include a thorough inspection at which time they found no issues with the cooling system.
So why am I upset that they supposedly found the leak during a routine battery replacement last month? Because at that point the car was ONE WEEK out of warranty and they stood to make $4000 that they would not have made if the leak was found one week earlier. They of course refused to honor the warranty at that point and told me that they would generously give me a whopping 10% discount on the outrageously expensive repair as a lame goodwill gesture.
I thought the timing of all this was just too convenient for them so I took the car to a reputable mechanic for a second opinion. He found no crack in the coolant manifold and pretty much implied that I had been scammed by Autobahn Land Rover's service department without saying it in so many words. It has been over one month since then and the car has been driven with no evidence of a coolant leak. Stay away from these guys!
