impossible to get in touch

I failed by just one point and, unfortunately, received no feedback at all. It’s been impossible to get in touch with anyone for support, which makes me question their marking process.

The waiting time for results is far too long, and the delay in rebooking exams is equally frustrating.

Overall, it feels more like a money‑making machine than a genuinely supportive qualification route.

HSE professionals should consider alternative pathways to achieve their certifications.

Money making scam

Money making scam. I would not recommend nebosh, if you can find an alternative route do it. I chose to do a nebosh course out of interest not because I needed the qualifications. I have been accused of using AI so they failed me. I am an older person with very limited IT skills. I have piles of hand written notes from my course work that’s how old school I am. Very disappointed, complete waste of time and money.

Abolish Nebosh!!!

3 months waiting only to fail it, wait 2 months for the resit and 3 months afterwards again for the results?!

This isn't serious and I fully support the comments here.

It's statistically impossible that so large classes fail the exam.

It's all about the money and they are laughing straight to the bank.

I'm absolutely sure I've done well, given my exprience, effort and time invested.

Nebosh opens a lot of high paid doors and they know that well, that's why they play around with people, with their money and precious time!!!!

Very poor

Very poor, followed training partner where they put N/A. Did the same and was referred for it. Clumsy material and hair splitting with marginal fails that are of course linked to wanting you to pay an extortionate amount for a resit. Very poor.

Nebosh is a money making scam

Nebosh is a money making scam. Your result is given on a basis of ‘because-we-say-so’. Absolutely no marking transparency. Appeals are answered with ‘please see the link attached’. They provide a marks breakdown for your exam but no context on why you’re marked down. Don’t waste your time. Do another qualification.

I enrolled through the knowledge…

I enrolled through the knowledge academy, NZ which was run through india. This made the correspondence challenging to say the least. I was mucked around, reported a complaint against my week 1 tutor as he spoke at such a rapid speed I couldn't understand what he was on about. He read word for word off the PowerPoint for 5 days straight, hardly stopping to breathe, we had to ask for breaks. Dreadful teaching style. 🥱😬The second tutor was refreshingly different ( phoenix training) .... Night and day difference.

I ended up feeling well prepped for my exam. I studied hard, cross referenced, planned, carried out a diligent examination of the scenario in my exam paper. I failed it with less than 50% which has shocked myself and everyone that knows how good a student I am. Then the follow up became a nightmare of corresponding back and forth to appeal and arrange a resit opportunity (missed calls at 1am, multiple staff repeating my story) I feel completely overwhelmed, exhausted and frustrated. I wish I'd never signed up for the course!!
Do your research, do not sign up unless the tutor in in your country.
The rules around nebosh exams are unbelievably unfair, and non helpful should you not pass.
If you get a tutor or examiner who is good, you'll probably pass. If you're like me and have the shocking experience I had, you'll fail and throw your money away, and be left feeling despondent and disappointed.
My advice is to study through a NZ based college or private PTE.

I truly feel it was a bit scammy from the start. Not good vibes.

DO NOT DO NEBOSH

I did my course with Phoenix, 9 days in a classroom. The teaching style was to go through slides, which basically mirrored the course book, with the teacher pausing now and then to tell us a story about his time as a H&S boss in the steel industry. The guy was very knowledgeable, but about 5 years past retirement. By the time we reached day 5 he’d told us the same story 3 times. The remaining 4 days were spent working on the risk assessment, which I’m not sure that’s what we were supposed to do. But I reckon instructors are told to do this because the risk assessment is notoriously easy to fail. It was a waste of time since the instructor offered little advice on the RA and, as I discovered later, you have to fail the RA to learn how to do it. Basically, you will fail the RA for reasons you will never understand. I failed the first time because I added silica dust as a hazard – a legitimate hazard I was familiar with in my work, proven to be just as deadly as asbestos – I was told this wasn’t a hazard. So I took that out and replaced it with something else, using Nebosh’s own RA sample as a guide. I failed again. So if you submitted Nebosh’s own RA, you would likely still fail.

I know of many instances now where an entire class has a 100% fail.

The huge fail rate comes down to two reasons: 1. Nebosh has an opportunity to get more money out of you 2. The way the exams are marked is wrong and possibly the marking is outsourced.

So you have a question that’s worth 10 marks. The advice is to give 10 separate answers to that question, better to throw in a few more just to make sure you are covered. And you get 3 marks. You only need 45 marks to pass. But once you get a bad mark on a big question, that’s it, you’re buggered. Chances are you won’t make up the marks now on the other questions. But why did you get only 3 marks? All of your answers were good ones, totally valid, maybe backed up with references to the scenario and regulations. If you gave 13 strong answers and got three marks, the examiner is saying that 10 of your answers were wrong. And this is where Nebosh can fail you, because they do not say which of your answers were accepted and which ones failed. A different examiner might have given you more marks. Why? Because there is no consistency between examiners? The examiners are being told to fail so many exams so you have to pay again? Because the examiners are not paid very much or the workload is too large so they just blast through the exam submissions to clear them off their desk? Because the exams are outsourced to India or Pakistan where English is not their first language?

Take your pick. But if you failed with a score of around 39 or 40, and you felt very strongly that your answers were good (maybe you had a qualified H&S colleague help you), then you mostly likely actually passed. I took the exam 3 times. I have a colleague who also took the exam three times, but he received an email from Nebosh to say he had actually passed on the second attempt and his paper was marked wrong. And that’s the other gripe, waiting 3 months to be told that you’ve failed.

My advice is DO NOT do Nebosh, do a different H&S qualification. Keep in mind that if you pass Nebosh, this is a qualification that they control, like being a member of an organization. They can take this away from you at any time, for whatever petty reason they can use.

Nebosh will likely have a whistle blower in the future, and don’t be surprised if you see adverts for compensation claims.

Very little has changed, it’s a money making scheme

Interestingly I could have given the same feedback as many here in 2017 already. So it doesn’t seem like much have changed over the years. I failed IGC 1, and was then told I could more £££ for remark. Considering I funded the course myself, I didn’t as I saw this as a money making organisation preying on opportunities to make more. This was after receiving great feedback during the course. They want robotic answers with zero capacity for personal insights, the correct answer is how it is written in the book and no other answer is expectable. I believe the NZ pass rate for the exam I sat was around 30% and the international pass rate was under 20%. If I was given those stats before I spent money on the NEBOSH IGC, I would spent it on a local qualification.

Better off doing IOSH Managing Safely

Firstly, I very much agree with some of the previous and eloquently-written negative reviews. Here is a review of my own experience to hopefully back them up.
I received a mark of 39 out of 100 for the exam element of my NEBOSH General Certificate, which I was utterly shocked by, given I had self-marked my own paper and was honestly expecting to get over 80%. I’d had very good feedback from my tutor throughout the course and when handing in mock exams and I was genuinely expecting a distinction. Apologies if that all sounds arrogant, but please read on and it’ll hopefully make sense.
Many other students on my course also failed, despite receiving very good feedback during the course. I had also seen their answers to mock exams and they were clearly knowledgeable and experienced H&S practitioners.
The course material and syllabus were very good and are appropriate for a practicing H&S Manager. However, the lack of transparency for how the exam is marked is woeful, and the NEBOSH business model is clearly based on not giving people proper exam results and not explaining why they have been marked so badly, so that they can then be charged excessive prices to make enquiries, to appeal, to request any further information, or to re-sit the exam. It preys on people having already committed a lot of time, effort and money to the learning process. The enquiries and appeals process and the associated fees were also not explained before undertaking the qualification.
NEBOSH appear arrogantly proud of the very low pass rate as if they’re only accepting ‘the cream of the crop’, when in reality the exam is about having to use a robotic answering style without any interrogation by the examiner as to the individual’s understanding of the topic.
The risk assessment element is similarly harsh and robotic; if one mark can be deducted from the entire 5 by 10 matrix then you fail the whole thing (fortunately I didn’t fall into this trap).
The marking philosophy is clearly “how can I deduct marks rather than award them”, which is counter-productive and reminiscent of the old way of doing health & safety (auditors looking for and celebrating findings of non-conformance). There is also zero accountability and visibility for the marking.
The feedback I had from my learning partner, whilst trying to help, was completely generic and unfortunately useless. They are effectively part of the same money-making scheme, fed by NEBOSH, so they won’t have anything negative and un-biased to say about it. There were questions where I'd received zero marks out of seven, one mark out of ten, etc. where it was impossible to see how. I had used the ‘point, evidence, explanation’ approach in each case and made clearly legitimate points in relation to the given scenario (all as per the generic feedback from my training provider).
I'm not new to health & safety management by any means. I'm a highly experienced quality and health & safety manager, having worked in the nuclear engineering industry for the best part of 20 years for several companies and my own consultancy.
NEBOSH’s argument, and that of the back office of my training provider, was that the knowledge might be there, but it was not properly demonstrated in my exam responses because I might not have used the exact technique for answering questions, or may not have structured my answers in the way they like. But, put simply, none of the generic comments I received accurately reflected my exam responses and it remains a complete mystery how they could not award marks for so many of the points I had made.
I must say I enjoyed the course itself and my tutor was excellent. But I’m entirely disenfranchised by NEBOSH and I will not be entertaining the idea of a paid re-mark or re-sit for a qualification I no longer hold in high regard.
If anyone would like any further information, please reach out to me on LinkedIn and I’d be happy to share and discuss.

Scam

On Friday the 4 of April, I requested a marking breakdown and a Enquiry about Results (EAR). Guess which one I got back first Monday Morning at 08h54? Not my marking breakdown, but The EAR telling me about how much I need to pay to get a remark. Again, I am all for making a profit, but I see that you’re putting your profits before anything else. It Take you 6-8 weeks to mark an assessment, no feedback another 40days for a EAR at £122 which is more than likely gonna make no impact. With another £175 for an assessment resit, to hopefully not do it all again. People should do their research before starting any of your courses. They will quite happily take all your money… Follow the NVQ route to get the L6.

Unit NG2

Unit NG2: Risk Assessment: Examiner Feedback

Part 2
''The student failed to identify at least ten hazards from each of the five categories. All of the columns were not filled
out with relevant information that matched the specifications. The learner is advised to refer to page 7 of the guide for correct hazard naming.''

This is narrow minded thinking. I used to work at this School last year, so I can confirm that the 14 risks are specific/relevant to the School. It may be suggested that there are more than just 5 categories of risks depending on which properties are being inspected.

Part 3
''The three arguments were clearly outlined and full information was given although they were not referenced to any legislation. The learner also managed to outline the specific number of people affected by the hazard explaining the likelihood and severity although on action 3 did not clearly point out the type of injuries and ill health. This is a must-have question and the learner failed to meet the required criteria''

Awful new online exam platform

Last October I decided to do an online Nebosh HSE process safety course and expected to be able to click on a multiple choice exam once I was ready. It was never made clear that you have to book an exam and the dates are few and far between to seemingly make you have knowledge fade and fail! A multiple choice question exam should be easy to access!

I had an email down the line informing me that I had to take part in some pilot software to take the exam and it was horrible! Cheap looking software that crashes and freezes intermittently, it doesn't work with my webcam despite all settings being enabled, the webcam light being on and the settings showing the software was successfully accessing it.

My laptop was ample spec for it and the support team offered little assistance really and made me feel like it was up to me to be an IT whizz and find the issue. The software doesn't allow itself to be minimised so trying things suggested by the support people was impossible without closing the software down and losing the chat! Plus I kept warning the team that my time window that my time window was due to expire and they didn't remedy that so I lost access to the support eventually as could no longer access the software.

Even the messing about with the phone camera, I don't know how to get much of the room, myself and my laptop in with the super tiny camera in their app that you have to download, it's also not great if you don't have a tripod to use! They really have made it hard and now I am in limbo about how I take my exam!

Terrible experience

My experience with NEBOSH has been terrible this last year. What has gone wrong in this organisation recently? The number of working days to process a simple question is completely unacceptable and if you are waiting for a formal complaint to be processed, be prepared for a long wait (and missed advertised SLAs). I am now waiting for my final Diploma certificate and currently on working day 20 with a simple chase up email asking whether the certificate is in the post that has not been answered on working day 4.
NEBOSH need to sort out their customer service level agreements or the OSH world may look to other options for their qualification body.

I am hoping that this review will not…

I am hoping that this review will not affect my exam results for NEBOSH General Health and Safety Cert.. but in all honesty the fast track route is deadly, with only 9 days of on line tutor led training and a total time period for completion 0f 3 weeks and 4 days for both the open book 24 hour NG1 exam (which took me 14 hours to complete), and the NG2 site risk Assessment which took another 50 hours of study and writing up time) makes me realise that the total study time of 3 weeks and 4 days, is not achievable for most people, I am utterly broken and damaged by this course as it ran alongside my very challenging full time job role. NEBOSH you talk a lot about Health and Safety and protection of the worker in the work place, yet your fast track examination process, expectation and course time frame completely breaches all the health and wellbeing standards of your so called protective legislation. Yours insincerely and utterly broken candidate of Swindon - November 2024.
