The worst pseudo-car rental company, a complete scam.
This company is a rip-off; they advertise on Booking.com for a promotional daily rate of $11.70 for 3 days. I purchased the insurance for $48 USD. Here's the story: virtual check-in on a computer. The process was slow, and they asked for all the documents again that I had already scanned beforehand. They didn't have access to them, so why did they ask me to scan them in advance, etc.? Their voucher process is completely useless. Then, because I live in Florida, the pre-purchased insurance wasn't valid, meaning I basically gave them $48 USD for nothing. I also had to pay for the SunPass transponder per day, plus tolls, and use my own insurance, etc. They charged me an additional $125.43. They have many hidden clauses; everyone who was picking up their cars was complaining, they don't give refunds, etc. It's terrible, the worst car rental company in the USA. It's unbelievable that Booking.com promotes this garbage.

Avoid Nu Car Rental PHX – Deceptive Practices & Unfit Vehicles
UPDATE (March 2nd, 2026)
I appreciate the effort to respond, but unless there is some material change to policies or other reversal of this trend - which the overwhelming and ongoing stream of negative reviews show is not the case - then the below post can best be framed as empty public relations.
/////
UPDATE (February 9, 2026): I reached out to both corporate and the local General Manager, Paul Rodgers, hoping for a shred of professional accountability. Instead, I was met with a masterclass in gaslighting and blame-shifting.
In a series of dismissive emails, Mr. Rodgers defended these predatory tactics by claiming that a car which physically cannot reach a major regional destination (Sedona) counts as a "fulfilled reservation." Most insultingly, he asserted that the burden of "due diligence" regarding their fleet's battery specs lies solely with the customer—effectively stating that you cannot trust the "Premium Elite" classification their own system provides.
To be clear: they intentionally list vehicles for the Phoenix hub that are unfit for Arizona geography, use 90-minute service delays to create a time-crunch, and then frame a forced "upgrade" as an "optional customer service gesture."
This isn't a "misunderstanding"; it’s a strategy. A quick look at the wealth of reviews here for this location confirms my experience is a documented, systemic pattern. I have since filed formal complaints with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection and the Better Business Bureau.
///
I am writing this as a warning to travelers. My experience at the Phoenix airport location was a textbook example of being backed into a corner through deceptive inventory practices.
I reserved a PREMIUM ELITE EV well in advance. Upon arrival - after a grueling 90-minute wait between their slow shuttle and an understaffed line - I was told my "Premium" vehicle was a Mini Cooper EV. When I informed the agent I was driving to Sedona, they admitted the car’s range cannot make that trip and there are insufficient charging stations on that route to make it viable.
Essentially, they rented me a vehicle that was unfit for the very low bar of regional travel.
Because I was already late for a scheduled event due to their own 90-minute processing delay, I was forced into an "upgrade" for a BMW crossover. This brought the total for a 2-day rental to $275, which is double the cost of my actual flight. They refused to honor my original reservation price, despite the fact that their own system booked an EV for a route it cannot service.
This felt like a predatory "bait and switch" designed to exploit travelers in distress.
Note: I have reached out to Nu corporate regarding this "stress tax" and will be requesting a rate adjustment upon drop-off to match my original booking. I will update this review once a resolution is reached. For now, stay away if you value your time or your wallet.

Horrible experience from start to…
Horrible experience from start to finish. Ended up eating the cost of what I’d paid (a supposed credit I’d been awarded to be applied to future rental) just to avoid any future dealings with them. Do NOT rent from them.

Resposta da NU Car Rentals
Don't book them.
I strongly encourage travelers to research NU Car Rentals / Easeway of Puerto Rico carefully before booking. KEEP SHOPPING FOR ANOTHER RENTAL PLACE. THIS IS NOT WORTH IT!
I reserved and prepaid my rental through Expedia for $256.52 ($140 rental and $116 in taxes) and purchased Expedia’s insurance Travel Guard for $130. Upon arrival, I was told NU does not accept third-party insurance. I was given a number to contact Expedia, which did not resolve the issue, and Expedia would not refund the insurance once the rental was considered active. I was then required to purchase NU’s insurance coverage for $385.99.
I was also required to purchase a toll package costing $79.34. I intentionally avoided toll roads throughout my trip, often adding significant drive time, yet I still only incurred about $4.20 in toll charges. Customers cannot typically provide their own toll pass because tolls are linked directly to rental vehicle plates in Puerto Rico.
Between the duplicate insurance purchase and mandatory toll package, my rental costs increased dramatically beyond what was originally quoted.
Before booking with ANY Puerto Rico rental company, I strongly recommend asking:
“Do your cars already include AutoExpreso or a toll program, and what service fees do you charge?”
I would personally choose a different rental provider in the future and hope this helps others avoid similar unexpected expenses.

You will be scammed into mandatory insurance
I rented two cars for our family of 8 for a long weekend vacation together. I put each of my sons down as the drivers. They wanted their credit cards for "incidentals" even though I'd already paid. When asked if they wanted insurance both said no. The employee said they would put them down for "basic", which we thought meant a basic package. It meant basic insurance and roadside assistance. So our total charges were significantly more. On top of that they said one of my sons kept the car an extra day??? I was IN that car when we pulled in on the correct day with my other son pulling in right behind us. We all had the same flight!! We asked if they could look at security footage and they said no. The cars also had a lot of dings, dents and scratches. We did at least take pics of all that before leaving the lot. We will NEVER rent from them again.

This place should close its doors! So unprofessional, scamming people is there hack. They make it like its a good deal when u book it then u get there and they have u by the balls so they start making up all these fees. my fees cost more then my original rental costs. Then they come out with the car, it was filthy inside and out like someone just returned it, dents, dings, and scratches all over it. NEVER AGAIN!

Positive Experience
I was a little nervous renting from Nu Car after reading some recent reviews, but my experience was actually completely fine. The pickup process was straightforward, the staff was professional and helpful, and the car was clean and I even got upgraded. Return was easy and I didn’t run into any surprise charges or issues. Overall, it was a smooth, no-stress rental, and I’d rent from them again based on this experience.

This is my 3rd time renting from this…
This is my 3rd time renting from this company; first was at Orlando airport . The car was ready at the allotted time .I was prepared with my auto policy showing rental car coverage and CC auto coverage. So I declined the additional paid coverage through the agency as required for my coverage to be valid. I did not want or need an upgrade, also declined . I did not need toll road coverage , just used maps avoid toll road ( lots in this area) and always fill gas on my own . The location is off airport but the shuttle was easy to locate , quick turn around time , and a blessing to avoid all the heavy traffic of the airport . They also contact you if you would like to extend rental , which we did and were given great rate. The Phoenix location , also was a great experience as well; for both times we rented. Although it’s a distance when we watched the cars from the airport train , for departures and arrivals at a stand still , this is a much better option overall. The only negative might be that it is prepaid no cancel or changed . Having said that , the airline changed my flight time 4 times for an upcoming trip to Orlando and is no longer within the 2 hour pick up window. When I called to request change due to this, it was accommodated and staff were very understanding and pleasant . No additional charge . So the bottom line ;I don’t understand the negative reviews with this company. I think they give the big name companies a run for their money , while keeping more money in my pocket .

NU CAR: Making life more difficult and less fair for people, one ruined vacation at a time.
Booked a standard suv from NU CAR six weeks prior to pickup, and double-checked my insurance to be sure I would not need additional from rental company.
We are five person family, so needed the extra space for comfort with room for bags.
After an already long day of travel, we arrived on time for pickup, and was told the car booked was unavailable, but we would get a comparable car, yet would need extra insurance, and had to prepay for everything, as well as pay a $300 deposit.
Meanwhile I overheard another customer being told they could get a compact suv Nissan Rogue on special for less than half what I was paying, so I said I was curious if that might work for me, but was told it was not the same size as the car reserved, so could not be offered anyway, and there was nothing else on offer on the lot anyway, and with a three hour drive ahead before nightfall, I dropped the subject.
I then took the keys for the car thinking it was the standard suv, only to get to the lot to find we were in fact given the compact suv Rogue!
When I rechecked the contract, I then realized the Rogue had been switched to be listed as the car rented, and knew then I would be writing this review about NU Car’s unethical practice of lying about the need for extra insurance, and baiting me with one car only to switch it out for another when I took the keys.
There are also an additional ~25% extra fee charges on the bill for airport and other trumped categories, an elevated sales tax charge, and a 3% credit card charge.
Further the Rogue had over 50,000 miles on it, was not very powerful, and was indeed too small for our needs.
Then, after the three hour drive to our destination, I called NU Car customer service to let them know I was unhappy with how I had been treated, and wanted an invoice adjustment at mimimim to reflect the car degrade and hassle.
‘Customer service’ acted like the pre-payment made was unchangeable, and said all they could offer was a car correction if I wanted to drive back three hours immediately to do the swap!
Altogether, then, I suggest everyone avoid this company.
(Received the attached reply from NuCar about a month after posting this, see that it is much like how they reply to the many, many other similar complaints to mine, so still doubt they sincerely care what happens to their customers as long as they make money, and can wheedle out of any real responsibility, gave them the information requested nonetheless, and will update if anything changes. Note: had I seen the rest of the reviews prior to booking a car with this company, I never would have. I was even warned by airport staff to avoid them when asking for directions to their offsite location. SMH)
(The second followup reply is laughable, and again smacks of just a thin veil tossed over bad behavior in an effort to simply look publicly responsive without taking any real responsibility for said behavior. The fact is this company has had ample opportunity to right the record and compensate customers for the many issues raised. I for one went directly to the service counter upon returning the car, after having called the customer service line, and then disputed the charges with my credit card company, and Nu Car stonewalled all of my efforts, just as they have, and likely will do, with others. BUYER BEWARE!!)

A horrible and absolutely dishonest…
A horrible and absolutely dishonest company. I have never had such a bad experience, ever. I have pre-purchased car insurance and a car. I went to the office to pick up the keys. The agent was very aggressive and told me that the insurance I had purchased did not cover 50% of the items it did cover (as later investigated). They pressured me for 2 hours until I agreed to sign a $302.84 completely new contract with them. The agent was very aggressive and unpleasant. The pre-purchase fee for the car and insurance was $295.47. I agreed because she told me that the insurance and the car are at that price, and because she lied about having no adequate coverage. Later on, after I left the office, it became evident that it was just the INSURANCE. I would have never agreed to this. They refused to reimburse me when I complained about their lies. The online agent was equally rude, and when I asked her to spell her name so I could complain about how they treat their customers, she said "customer service" and hung up. Please, never buy anything from these people and spread the word if you do not want to be completely scammed by these crooks.

I made reservations to rent a car from NU Rentals
I made reservations to rent a car from Nu Car Rentals on Nov. 9th thru the 16th 2025. I paid a deposit of 282.81 on Nov 3rd. I spoke to Carl and he assured me that my vehicle would be ready. Unfortunately my flight was cancelled after spending all day at the airport in Norfolk Va. due to the shutdown. I ended up driving to Orlando and contacted Carl to cancel my reservation. He stated that i couldn't give me a refund because he made special arrangement for the vehicle. I have emailed and called their company serveral times and as of this date, have not received a refund or explanation from Carl.

Very Disappointed
I booked my car rental through PriceLine. I was going to be in Arizonia for 4 days. PriceLine quoted me Daily rate of $31.19, Number of days 4, Taxes and fees $128.22, Car subtotal $252.98; Total charged $252.98. I get home and 3 days later I receive my final invoice bill for $526.07 a difference of $273.09. LOTS of unexpected hidden fees. You have to take a sky train at the airport to the rental cars and then a shuttle to NU because they are not onsite at the airport. Very confusing to find. I did not get the expected car I booked. With 5 people and luggage it was very packed. I will never use Priceline or NU Car Rental again.

Did not get the car I rented
Did not get the car I rented. I needed an SUV for 6 WITH luggage. Received a Traverse that would not fit our luggage. Had to drop the 3rd row seat and stack luggage, and sit on laps. Ordered an Expedition. Agent told me we would be fine in a Traverse. Not even possible. Also, fees were an additional 145% on top of what I already paid for the rental!!!!! Also, NOT located at the airport. You have to shuttle, which is a mile walk to the shuttle area, with your luggage, then take a 10 minute ride TO the rental place to get your car.

Absolute terrible experience without heaving a car rented. I asked 4 different employees to estimate do insurance cost in Mexico rental location. All of the forwarded me only the “blabla” from the website without beeing able to answer my concrete question. When I escalated asking the same question again all of them just stoped responding. What a client service is that. I wonder how would it work in case I rented a car in reality.

A true scam
A true scam. Booked a car for week. They said $60 which I knew sounded low but I figured they’re not gonna upcharge too much. I brought all my insurance papers from home but they said I still had to pay an extra $365 for another insurance. ( I have full coverage)
I had to take TWO shuttles to get there. I didn’t take the car but I still had to take a shuttle all the way back and find another car. It was a nightmare

NEVER AGAIN!!
NEVER AGAIN!!! I booked a car, advanced pay with confirmation for $178.42. When I got to my destination to pickup car my rental went up to $536.64. I was hit with mandatory insurance required in that state, rental surcharges, facility charges, operation fee, vehicle license, taxes, energy recovery and CC surcharge. The fine print said some states MAY have mandatory insurance requirements . They don´t say which states , which I am sure every state is on their list. Beware of this company. Low prices to lure you in!!!

Total scam.
Total scam..
they make it impossible for you to use your own car insurance and then charge more then double the cost of the rental using older vehicles . they are located offsite from the legit car rentals where the shuttle drops you off.. then you have to take another shuttle to this dump. Took an additional 40 minute bus ride and wait time from the main car rental hub. I cancelled and called an uber
Something is really fishy about this place. All the customers were arguing with people behind the desk.. I wasn’t the only one who called an uber.
My next trip I used Alamo . They charged me a reasonable price, offered car insurance for $18 a day not $157 dollars a day which you did not have to take and you did not have to show your car insurance …

If I could give this boot leg car…
If I could give this boot leg car service a 0 i would. What started as an 8 dollar per day rental has turned into over 300 dollars charge on my card. First they have a policy that you need to have a car insurance policy that includes rentals and that has to be paid per day and you cannot use your own sunpass, so you will be charged daily and if you refuse, then you will be charged 250 dollars.
When I tell you I can’t wait until this business perish because they are 1000% fraudulent, and they need to go to jail.

Very disappointing experience
Very disappointing experience. Less than 1 star. The fees they added at the counter doubled the initial fee. They refused to remove added insurance fees. The pick up location is difficult to get to and the wait was ridiculously long. It caused me to miss the meeting I traveled to Phoenix for. I guess to save a small amount of money the transit van drops you off where it picked you up far from the departures area and you have to walk back up to departures. This is an absolute never again. Fool me once.
