1 Star – Unsafe, Unprofessional, and Completely Ruined Our Trip
We booked a 4-night stay with Rent Key West Rentals but left after only one night because our room was broken into. We stayed at the “516 Olivia street” rental, on the second floor. During that first night, an older white male entered our rental and stole my $3,000 Gucci backpack. Thankfully, we had brought our own home security camera since we were traveling with our dog, and the break-in was caught on video. The police came and a report was filed.
Despite this serious situation, Rent Key West Rentals refused to move us to another room or refund the remaining nights so we can stay in a place we felt safe. Instead, we were told we should “just leave because we won’t feel safe anywhere.” The manager was called several times and he kept telling me to call back at 9am when they opened, but when I called at 9am, the lady told me he is not available. We decided to go to the office of the rental company and when we tried to follow up with the manager, we were told again that “he is not here”, but the manager never once reached out to us.
To make matters worse, when we calmly asked for a refund and to speak with someone in charge, the woman at the office threatened to call the police on my husband and me. We were treated like we were the problem instead of victims of a crime. There was no apology, no compassion, and no accountability—just rudeness and avoidance. The lady kept saying the door was left unlocked (which was not true) and the video clearly shows the criminal entering from the back door and not the front door she was claiming was left unlocked.
This trip was supposed to be a birthday getaway for my husband, and it was completely ruined. Based on how everything unfolded, I can’t help but feel this may have been an inside job.
Do not stay here. The property is unsafe, and the staff’s behavior was appalling. We left feeling violated, scared, and deeply disappointed.
