I have been purchasing from Shar Music…

I have been purchasing from Shar Music since 2024, originally recommended by my child’s violin teacher. Unfortunately, my experience has been consistently disappointing.

Multiple shipments arrived with missing items, including a bow and accessory kits. I had to contact customer service several times to request refunds. In one case, I contacted them five separate times through live chat and email before the issue was addressed. The responses were inconsistent — they would promise one thing but fail to follow through.

I also noticed that low-rating reviews seem to be removed from their website, which is concerning.

Additionally, the quality of one violin I purchased (1/8 size $470) was not satisfactory. The E string had a persistent noise issue. We replaced the string, but the problem remained. After bringing it to a local violin shop, we discovered the issue was due to a poorly designed bridge. We ultimately had to replace the bridge at our own expense. Overall, the instrument quality did not meet expectations.

Based on my experience, I would recommend buyers carefully consider other options

Worst service

Worst service, don't buy from them, I made a mistake and they sent my order even they knew I requested the cancelation, so I lost my money

Company send wrong size violin and upon…

Company send wrong size violin and upon return refused to cover shipping, saying that buyer ( first time buying violin) instead of writing "it's a wrong size wrote" " I need next size " . Would not call back, and even after lengthy conversation in follow up email still couldn't get the correct size of violin needed. I have never encountered anything like that in 30 years of playing and teaching.

Terrific customer service

Terrific customer service! I spoke with Kyndra, who was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and patient. She clarified a confusion with my order, resolved the issue, helped me place a new order, and assisted with starting a return for an item I ordered by mistake.

Former loyal customer

Like other commenters, I have been a loyal Shar customer for decades. My mom bought music and strings from them starting in 1970 when my brother and I started taking lessons. I have recommended Shar first to all my students for years.

Something has happened. First it was the $2 restocking fee if you return something, which seemed petty, but I figured this is a family-owned business trying to make ends meet, and I’d rather support this small business than Amazon. (Besides, when buying on Amazon, how do I know the strings I get aren’t some cheap Chinese knock-offs?)

This time around, it was a bad set of very expensive strings that I put on two weeks before a performance and three before an audition. I quickly ordered another set. They came a couple days ago, except that…it’s not my strings. I got some other customer’s beginning violin book. I emailed right away explaining how serious this is (the concert is in four days!) and asked if they could expedite a set. I can forgive a mistake, no problem. But they haven’t even responded, which is a deal breaker.

I am so disappointed, but apparently it is time to find another violin shop that is reliable.

Horrible company

Horrible company. I bought an expensive set of violin strings from them and when one string broke within a few months even though cheaper string sets from elsewhere have lasted much longer, they wouldn't even waive shipping on a replacement string. They don't care about retaining customers, so don't buy from them.

Terrible customer service

I just ordered a new set of strings and at the last minute noticed it was a ball end instead of a loop end. Even though the order hadn't been shipped yet they indicated that they can't do anything about it so I have to send it back once it arrives in 2 weeks. Not helpful service at all, very rude. I used to be a loyal customer of Shar but I have found them so unhelpful I'll never order from them again.

They refused to admit they were in error

Based on their website description, I ordered a replacement leg for my Bonmusica shoulder rest. The website said it was the "short" "left leg. Sadly, I didn't notice thst it also said it was 50MM. The part arrived and it was not the left leg nor was it short. I contacted Shar and they insisted it was correct. I sent them documentation showing it was NOT correct and their website had it listed wrong. They then said they "investigated" and it was correct. I sent them more documentation and asked for a refund. For the record, the "short" "left" leg is 35MM...not 50MM. They charged me for shipping but wouldn't pay for me to return it. Now I'm supposed to trust they'll refund my money when they get the part back. We shall see.

Used to be a shar customer…

After being a loyal shar music customer for close to 15 years, I was incredibly disappointed with their refusal to address selling me a set for strings with one defective string. They were expensive strings that I bought ahead of time for an audition. I opened them shortly after the 30 day window, and they wouldn’t do anything about it. I bought the single string from another company and will take my business Elsewhere

Horrible customer service

Horrible customer service. I ordered a set of Jargar cello strings and the A string broke when my son's music teacher was installing the string. I requested to return the strings and waited a week with no response. I then called Shar Music and they said they would only replace the one broken string but would not allow a return and refund of the other strings since they had been opened and installed. After thinking about it a couple minutes, I called back and requested a refund for the one broken string but they wouldn't do that either. It's better to buy from Amazon or some other place with good return policies.
