Sunshine Games Mystery Box - It's a Mystery why anyone would buy a second one.
When I came across the listing for "Magic the Gathering card Mystery Box (Medium)" I thought this sounds to good to be true!
It was.
Product took 9 business days to arrive, and when it did the contents technically lined up with what was promised due to heavy usage of the phrase "Up To", but I feel like what I was delivered is hardly in keeping with the product description.
Listed Contents:
- Up to 9 packs
- 1 Deck
- Up to 3 custom packs
What I received, with prices from Magic Madhouse:
- 1 Dominaria Remastered Booster £4.45
- 1 Jump Start Dominaria United £4.95
- 2 Jump Start Brothers War £7.90
- 1 Half of the 2022 Starter Kit (no arena code) £3.48
- 2 "Custom Packs" £0
- 2 Relic Token packs (£2.50 equivalent as per card market at time of review. The last sale was $45 for a case of 36.)
Total value: under £23.50.
To break the box down:
Packs:
- Dominaria Remastered Booster. Good product, happy to receive it.
- 3 Jumpstart Boosters. Underwhelming to receive, but you expect some chaff filler in a mix box. Received 2 of the same packs (Titanic), which is not the suppliers fault - but definitely rubbed salt in the wound. These packs have pre-determined contents plus a single random rare, so it doesn't feel much like a "Mystery" when opening them.
- 2 Relic Token Packs. This is not what anyone expects to receive when you put the contents of the box as "Packs". Contains 0 cards, just some hard to read life trackers.
4 actual packs is far below the expected contents of "Up to 9" packs, with only one having actual random contents is a real let down.
- 1 half of the 2022 Starter Kit (with the Foil rare in a large rigid card sleeve). As advertised, it's a deck. One I have already, but that's not the fault of the supplier. No complaints here.
- 2 "Custom Packs". This is what annoyed me so much it pushed me to write a review about this product. Across 2 "packs" I received 13 commons and 2 pack fill advertisement cards.
Let's just unpack that for a second. In a pack that's so low effort and value they couldn't even be bothered to put a single Uncommon in (let alone a Rare) they filled it out with an outdated promo advertisement card? Adding another £0.01 unplayable common was too much value for this pack was it? What an absolute disgrace of an addition. Not only that, but they couldn't even decide how many cards should be in each pack! One had 6 commons and a advertising card and the other had 7 and an ad card.
When you buy a mix box you run the risk of getting things you have no use for, that's the value of a bulk box (to the supplier). The expectation is that it's a lottery, where you may get something useful or something that's not particularly useful to you - but you expect the value to be roughly what you paid for the box (within a reasonable +/-%).
I cannot recommend purchasing one of these boxes, as they not only contain below the expected value, but also contain products that are obviously filler to a disrespectful level.
2/5 because they technically followed the letter of the content listing, and had a speedy response when I messaged the customer service to let them know my product hadn't arrived.
