Sold some gold Jewellery

I rang to book an appointment to look at some gold Jewellery that was my mums, who recently passed away.
I was greeted by the friendly reception staff and then James who valued the jewellery.
He was very knowledgeable and very easy to talk to.
He explained about each piece and what it was worth, and explained what would happen now and when the auction was.
I quickly received an email after the auction to tell me what had sold and how much for.
I was very happy with the money I received for the jewellery
All very easy and straight forward.
I have now just been and left some glassware to be valued.
I would recommend them to others

James was very friendly and knowledgeable. He efficiently assessed and discussed with us the value of all our items and what could be auctioned. He explained how, when and the terms of their auctioning services. Before effortlessly and carefully packaging the auction items to take with him. We received formal confirmation of all the items to be listed with their valuation and reserve the following day. We were able to view and follow the auction.

Exortion tactics. Avoid!

Exortion tactics when it comes to shipping and terrible customer service.
I won a single lot costing aorund £30. They quoted me £30 shipping for items that could be fit into a small royal mail package.
I asked for just packaging and would arrange my own collection. They quoted me £10 to package a few small ornaments. Customer service thereafter atrocious. They placed a block on my account and now it affects every auction I apply to bid on. I asked them to remove and the office manager thought it better to just go back and forth with me explaining the website rules and regulations. Avoid at all costs!

Hi Mo
Thanks for your review and I'm sorry to hear about your experience. As I understand it we did try and contact you (unsuccessfully) a number of times to try and resolve the issue as we're always happy to come to a fair compromise, however the item was left unpaid for, hence the block on your account. I understand this may cause issues with registering at other sales for which i can only apologise. If you'd like to discuss further please don't hesitate to contact me directly, I'm sure a fair solution is still possible. Kind regards, James Warren.

Excessive Jewellery Postal Costs

Online buyers of jewellery at their auctions beware of their scandalous postal costs. They charge £24 PLUS VAT (£26.40) for a Royal Mail Special Delivery insured up to £1000 label which actually costs £12.75 with NO VAT applicable. That's one huge markup to pop a ring into an envelope.

Update: Irrespective of a single or several pieces of jewellery sent in a small jiffy bag insured for up to £1000 and weighing no more than 150g Royal Mail charge £12.75 no VAT. Your representative Rose has quoted me £24 + VAT so my review is not incorrect. Your jiffy bags must be very expensive and the service for packing outstanding for that amount of uplift.

Hi Gina

Thanks for your review but this information is incorrect. For a single item of jewellery insured up to £1000 we charge £15+VAT for P&P (the VAT is applicable due to the packing and service)

If you require further information please don't hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards

James Warren FGA DGA

Update: (I presume this relates to Steven's postage request?) Apologies, but the information is still incorrect. We quoted £22-24 + VAT for 5-6 items of jewellery, which, if you bought 6 lots is £4,40 to £4,80 per lot. Bearing in mind in it's an auction and we don't know which specific items you were thinking of bidding on, It's obviously hard to know exactly what the final price will be and ultimately what the final insurance costs would be. Again VAT is applicable because it's a service including the actual cost of postage, materials and time. I hope this is of some help.

Very Disappointed

I am very disappointed and fuming with Warren & Wignal. I booked a slot for the 16th May at 10am to bring a van load of goods that belonged to my parents. Sadly both of my parents recently passed away and I was left with their belongings which consisted of furniture (bedroom furniture, oak units, oak TV stand, oak coffee table), kitchen goods (table & chairs, electrical appliances, cutlery), ornaments & pictures, a bike, disability aids (wheelchair, walking frame), my mother‘s jewellery, a 65” TV, an antique clock, plus many more items. I arrived at the auction house as instructed only to be told that there was nothing on the system and that I was not booked in. I explained to one of the employees that I visited Warren & Wignal in person a few weeks earlier to look at some items that I was interested in bidding on and to make the booking. The employee even remembers me being there. I also have a business card at home with the date and time written down by the receptionist when to bring my goods in.
I was basically told that they had nowhere to store my items and that they were not that interested in what I had. I told the employee to forget it and I will do a car boot. I have been coming to Warren & Wignal for a few years and I have spent thousands of pounds with them. I had to return home with all my parents belongings with me which was the last thing that I wanted. As I said before, I am very disappointed and upset during this difficult time for me.

Hi Steve

Thanks for your review. All the appointments are booked in on the basis that general items are to be assessed before consignment. Although your appointment didn't appear on the appointment sheet we were still happy to appraise the items and advise accordingly. Sadly in this instance we thought the majority of the items were not suitable for auction. We did try to enquire if you had anything of value to sell but I think by that point you had made your decision to take the items elsewhere and that's absolutely fine.

In recent months/years we've made the decision to cut back on general items so that we can concentrate on specialist sales, collectors items and in particular jewellery.

We still undertake a lot of house clearances and will continue to sell general items once a month but we have limited storage space and are having to be picky on accepting general items from private individuals. We accept fully that some long standing customers will find this hard to adapt to and even upsetting.

If you'd like to discuss this matter further please don't hesitate to contact me.

At best W&W are disingenuous

At best W&W are disingenuous, at worst they are deliberately misleading, by with-holding known information to induce a sale. This is by their own admission; it is not opinion.

I won two lots of vinyl records; by and large, garbage. Dirty, scratched, water damaged, covers are torn, seams are split, sleeves are ripped, and the odd one is even empty. When I enquired, I was told “All vinyl is checked through and all quality LPs are removed”, so they knew that what I was bidding on was garbage and decided not to say. I was then told that it was “due to the volume of lots we have”, but it doesn’t stack up when they reviewed the vinyl and removed the “quality” ones. Even if that excuse held water, it is not my responsibility to ensure they can handle their workload. I was also advised that I should have requested a condition report. That may be technically correct per their terms, however, I have bought hundreds of records from reputable auction houses and all were fantastic quality. And remember, W&W admit they knew what they were selling was rubbish, but omitted to say so. I shouldn’t have needed a condition report, if they were either selling merchantable quality goods or being transparent with the facts.

The vast majority of the collections are stuff charity shops would struggle to give away; classical, Slim Whitman, Charley Pride, James Last, etc. Of the ones name-checked in their description, all were scratched and damaged except one. And they were not representative of the collection.

Yes, it was something of a punt. No, I did not expect everything to be perfect. No, I did not expect everything to be Thriller or Back In Black. But nor do I expect to be someone else’s skip and to have to pay for that pleasure!

Dear Mr Smyth

Thanks for your review. In the interest of potential future bidders, please please please ask for a condition report prior to bidding. We're happy to provided further information, detailed condition reports and extra images of any of the lots prior to the auction. If the information that you require to make an informed bid is not on the catalogue please ask. Please do not bid blind.

Regarding records specifically. General none collectable and low value records are sold in bulk in our General, Antiques & Interiors sales, these records are generally of little value and mixed condition, given the time constraints of a 1000+ lot sale, it's not possible to provided a detailed condition report at the time of cataloguing. Although as previously mentioned we'd be happy to provided a condition report upon request. The better collections of records that are consigned are sold in our Collectors Sales, these included single lots of rare and valuable records catalogued with detailed descriptions, graded and often with multiple images. These sales also included better parcel lots of specific genres and collectable records.

Cormac, if you'd like to talk further please don't hesitate to contact me personally.

Yours sincerely

Overall a terrible service.

As per the other review, they significantly undervalued one particular item. Only after a call from me did they include items in the auction collected by their carrier. Carriers charges completely over the top and when challenged refused to provide a breakdown. Steer clear

Extreme lack of knowledge

James provided significantly underestimated values and conducted minimal research on items for sale. He disregarded the client's recommendations, insisted on payment to halt the auction after declining to adjust estimates, and proceeded with the auction despite a request to stop it. This was perhaps the most negative experience I've ever had at an auction.

The service was poor and highly confrontational.

Edit. You described very historic and valuable watches as with minimal effort, a watch over £2000 in value at other auctions was described by you and your team as just the brand name, there was no model references.

I provided you with every detail of every watch, you was extremely lazy or pawned them off to friends.

After cataloguing the second batch of watches I regret that you didn't learn your lesson about the importance of attention to detail, again you you just called a watch a watch.

You lost me tons of money, you are the worst auction house I have ever dealt with.

Sham.

Resposta da Warren & Wignall Auctioneers

Dear David

Thanks for your review. This relates to two batches of watches which were consigned to auction, I'll describe in detail below.

October 2023, you first emailed us regarding the sale of a collection of watches and about commission rates. We replied and offered a very preferable rate. You then booked an appointment to see me so we could appraise the watches and advise on what we think they may be worth to sell at auction.
When we first met, I realised very quickly that your expectations were simply too high. I advised that the watches were not likely to go for a great amount at auction and if you wanted to proceed we'd simply offer most of them for sale with low estimates and without reserve with the exception of the few higher priced examples. Indeed, I spent at least 30 minutes trying to convince you NOT to sell the watches at auction.
Regardless of my advice you decided that you needed to sell them and consigned them to auction to be sold at our discretion. We therefore indicated the next suitable sale and proceeded to catalogue the watches, this involves researching each model and comparing them to previous auction house results using auction result databases.
Once the work had been completed we emailed the pre-sale advice to you and you emailed back wanting to withdraw all 35 lots. As per the terms and conditions, withdrawal of lots incurs a charge so we both agreed the best way forward would be to keep the watches in the sale with a reduced commission rate and increased estimates/reserves. We sold 31 of the watches and grossed over £2,600 on the hammer. You decided you wanted the four unsold watches back and that is the last we heard from you for four months.
March 2024, you came in and consigned another batch of watches without booking an appointment to see me nor asking for any advice. We catalogued the watches and emailed the pre-sale advice, you then emailed back wanting to withdraw them all again. This time I was not so amenable and indicated as per the terms and conditions that to withdraw the lots would incur a charge and we were not willing to adjust the estimates.
To summarise, I can understand the first incident, despite my exceptionally upfront and honest advice (which you completely ignored), I was willing to help and find a solution. My only regret was cataloguing the second batch of watches, we should've given these back to you. After the first sale I naively thought that you understood the procedure, were happy with the results and therefore consigned more.

If you want to talk to me further, please don't hesitate to contact me.
