An outrageous roaming rip-off — nearly 40,000 HUF for just 400 MB
My wife and I traveled to Geneva and intentionally left roaming enabled because we needed mobile service. What we did not expect was to receive a pathetic 200 MB of data each, only to be charged approximately 20,000 HUF per phone—nearly 40,000 HUF in total for a combined 400 MB.
That is not meaningful roaming service. It is an absurd, grossly disproportionate charge for practically no usable data.
I visited a local Yettel store, where the representative acknowledged that the charge was unfair. However, he claimed he had no authority to correct it and told me to call customer service on 1220.
I called and was promised a callback from an English-speaking representative. Two hours later, the representative did call—and he also acknowledged that the charge was unfair. Yet, once again, Yettel refused to adjust the bill.
So Yettel’s own employees can recognize that a charge is unreasonable, but apparently nobody is willing or authorized to do anything about it. What kind of customer-service system is that? It seems designed to shuffle customers from one powerless employee to another until they become exhausted and simply pay.
Charging nearly 40,000 HUF for only 400 MB of data feels less like providing a telecommunications service and more like holding a customer’s phone bill hostage. Whether Yettel calls it a roaming tariff, an automatic package, or hides behind the fine print, the result is the same: an astonishing amount of money taken in exchange for virtually nothing.
A responsible company would have reviewed the circumstances, recognized how wildly disproportionate the charge was, and corrected it. Instead, Yettel acknowledged the unfairness twice and still kept the money. That is not customer service. It is corporate indifference at its ugliest.
Anyone considering Yettel should think very carefully before roaming outside Hungary. You may receive almost no data, face an enormous bill, and then discover that the people who agree you were treated unfairly are supposedly powerless to help you.
Utterly disgraceful. Yettel has lost my trust completely.
