I honestly feel like I’m losing my mind…

I honestly feel like I’m losing my mind staring at the Zearn loading screen every single day. As a student, I can tell you that this program isn’t just a math tool; it’s a test of my patience that I am currently failing. We are told that technology is supposed to make learning more efficient and personalized, but Zearn feels like it was designed to do the exact opposite. It is a repetitive, patronizing, and unforgiving system that makes me want to close my laptop and never look at a number again.
The biggest issue, by far, is the absolute lack of mercy when it comes to mistakes. In a real classroom, if I get a step wrong, my teacher walks me through it and we move on. In Zearn, if I miss one tiny detail or click the wrong box, the program acts like I’ve failed the entire concept. There are so many instances where you get exactly one chance to get a "Tower of Power" question right. If you slip up, you don't just get a hint; you get sent back to the very beginning of the sequence. It’s soul-crushing. You can spend ten minutes working through a difficult set of problems, make one accidental click, and suddenly you’re staring at the exact same screen you saw fifteen minutes ago. It doesn’t feel like learning; it feels like a punishment. It teaches me to be afraid of clicking anything, which is the opposite of how math is supposed to work.
Then there is the repetition. I understand that practice makes perfect, but Zearn takes it to a level that feels like a loop in a horror movie. You do the same types of problems in the digital lesson, then the same ones in the activity, and then more of the same in the "Tower of Power." If the goal is to make us memorize a specific pattern by force, then I guess it works, but it doesn’t actually help us understand the logic. By the time I’m on my tenth version of the same fraction problem, my brain has completely checked out. I’m just looking for the pattern to get the green checkmark so I can finally be done. It turns math into a chore rather than a skill.
What makes all of this even worse is the tone of the program. It treats us like we are literally in kindergarten. The animations, the overly enthusiastic voices, and the way the speakers talk down to the audience is insulting. I’m in middle school, but the program is talking to me in this high-pitched, slow, "baby" voice that makes me feel like I’m watching a show for toddlers. It is hard to take the curriculum seriously when the interface is designed for someone half my age. We are trying to learn complex math, but the program is busy showing us cartoon characters and using simplified language that feels patronizing.
Zearn takes all the joy and curiosity out of math and replaces it with a rigid, frustrating, and boring cycle. Between the endless repeats, the "one strike and you're out" policy on questions, and the fact that it treats us like babies, it’s no wonder so many studentsdread it. We need tools that actually respect our intelligence and allow us to learn from our mistakes without dragging us back to square one. Until then, Zearn is just a daily exercise in frustration that makes us hate a subject we might actually be good at if it were taught differently.

TOWER OF POWER

TOWER OF POWER! It sucks! the amount of times I have cried at that stupid tower is to many to count but even if I got the number close Zearn would restart my memory to try to get the amount of times I have cried due to Zearn

“Educational” site? More like patience tester

Calling this an “educational site” feels generous.

Every time you get a wrong answer on the Tower of Power, you’re greeted by this weird little brain/alien-looking thing that honestly looks like something my dog threw up. Instead of helping you learn, it just makes the whole experience more annoying.

And the videos? The Zearn teachers talk like they’re teaching little kids. I’m 15, not in kindergarten. The overly childish tone makes it hard to take anything seriously, and it honestly just feels condescending.

If the goal is to actually help students learn, maybe focus less on goofy characters and more on clear explanations that don’t talk down to people.

Overall, frustrating, awkward, and not nearly as helpful as it should be.

Horrible

I am a student. I remember fondly that when our teacher didn’t want to teach us basic 5th grade math, she would either put us on Freckle, a better site in my opinion, or Zearn. I would have huge temper tantrums when I got a question wrong and I had to do the entire tower section all over again. I hated the yellow block with a passion, and I still do. Also, the Wild Cards, the best part of Zearn, could only be chosen once. And once you’ve chosen it, you have to wait for a whole day. Please, if you are a teacher, do not use Zearn. It’s for the better.

It’s awful

It’s awful. I hate how on the tower power you have to go back to where you started from and have to restart it if you get one thing wrong. Also, it’s really boring and they need to make it more fun and interactive do not use.

Zearn is bad just so you know

Zearn is bad just so you know. Yeah it isn't flexible. Honestly i'd rather listen to poorly tuned Adachi Rei in English than do Zearn THAT'S how bad Zearn is. Please school boards if you're reading this please don't use Zearn. Please this happens every week.

Why Zearn isn’t the best choice

I’ve been using zearn a for many many MANY years but it never has been fun and made me hate math for a while. I used to love math and I do now but almost all through primary I hated math because of zearn. I remember when I was in primary, students would cry and have mental breakdowns and I’ve seen multiple people actually punch their computers out of frustration (not only primary but also even middle schoolers!) because the tower of power only lets you be wrong TWO TIMES sometimes even 1! And if you get it wrong they make you redo the whole problem with this annoying yellow block then reset the whole stage you were on! They also make everything way more complicated than they have to! For example they will use super weird terminology just for it just to be asking for “what’s x” making it way harder for kids to actually learn. They will also expect you to answer pretty hard questions most adults couldn’t even do in their head! Then they will get mad at you for not getting it right and the stupid yellow cube will “help you” make you do the whole question over without telling you what to do and then give you a brand knew question all without a calculator! Zearn also has no fun for kids and becomes extremely boring and repetitive after doing the same thing every time! It will always be something small like a number match that takes like a minute at most to complete then you do a math chat that takes around 10 minutes with questions in between that is extremely boring then go to the tower of power with the evil yellow cheese cube. I personally don’t have ADHD but I know people who do and they also hate zearn due to it being really boring, repetitive and the yellow cube making you redo a question over and over with no help saying it’s a “boost” I know this is really long but please find something better because this isn’t the best!

This is a useless website that claims to teach math.

This. Is. HELL. All it does is make me hate math more than I already do. Right after I had to use I-Ready for 5 years, I had to use this. While some other reviews simply say it's bad, and one said they were sad because it had no games. Really, the main issue is that this makes math more confusing rather than teaching students math skills like it claims it can do. If I had to describe Zearn in one word, it would be horrible.

Very palatable rubbish.

I'm willing to bet that the person who uploaded this page did it just so they could 'dunk' on the developers. With a score of 3.2 as of writing this review, I believe the rating is incorrect because the only review is a 2nd grader yapping about how it "Sucks and is bad". Anyways, it would be good, if it wasn't an exact copy of the Eureka math books. Although fun in grades before 3rd, Zearn should only be be used every once in a while in 4th and 5th.
