Ahora resulta que SIN NUESTRO CONSENTIMIENTO todos los papers que subamos van para la IA (por favor revisad los que podáis los ajustes de la cuenta). También me he enterado de que tengo otra cuenta que ni conocía, a la que no puedo acceder, con mi nombre completo y tres papers subidos que no tengo manera de borrar, ni acceder. No es nada ético esto. Les he pedido ayuda para poder acceder a dicha cuenta (porque no me deja con ninguno de mis correos, no entiendo nada). En fin, una cosa es compartir conocimiento y otra bien distinta es que este pulule por la red sin tener en cuenta el trabajo de nadie, ni su contribución ni nada (por no hablar de que vale lo mismo copiar y pegar de aquí a allá como hace la Ia, que un artículo que ha seguido una metodología científica). Vaya tiempo nos espera para el conocimiento... mucho miedo me da todo esto. Es necesaria YA una legislación sólida por parte de las instituciones, porque estamos poniendo a prueba años de investigación y búsqueda del conocimiento y de la verdad.

Their continued "your name cited in a research" emails luring me to get their premium subscription have to stop once and for all. This is ridiculous.

Used Academia.edu for some years as an academic exchange, paying about 99€/year. Today they charged me with 188€ without announcing the price increase and without my consent.
My refund process via PayPal is still in process, but I'll definitely leave Academia.edu with this lost in trust as well as this money making scam for quite no service or academic benefits. I would therefore advise you against using academia.edu!

This is a disgraceful organisation. They tricked me into an 'auto renewal' package and are refusing to refund me. They did not send me any warnings about renewal dates. It is scam.

Increases prices and keeps billing

This is a scam. If you subscribe for premium, you will receive a mail a year later with a lot of marketing blurb and at the very end of the mail a note that they are increasing your subscription fee by 25 - 50% for the renewal; a week later you have a payment on your card. When you then try to cancel, you see a page which gives you the impression you have cancelled, but there's a little button at the bottom which you still have to press - only if you go through five or six of these false cancellation pages, it actually says it has been cancelled. I cannot find any price structure on the website - they seem to increase their subscription every year by a massive amount until you finally cancel. And then you do not even get an email confirmation of the cancellation (so I do not know whether they will try again next year).

Academia.edu hat die Kosten für die Premium Membership von 99€ im Jahr 2022 auf 158,87€ (2023), auf 213,01€ (2024) und auf 320,11€ (2025) erhöht. Das ist grotesk!

Diese Firma missbraucht den edlen Namen der Akademie, der uns von Platon überkommen ist, um einen Abonnementsfalle aufzubauen: Trotz rechtzeitiger Kündigung buchen sie unverfroren den Jahresbetrag von 120 € an, also Finger weg!

On 8/15/2025 I cancelled my automatic renewal of my Academia.edu subscription. On 8/19/2025, my that organization charged my credit card for the renewal of my subscription. When contacted about this, they refused to credit my credit card for this unauthorized charge stating "While we're unable to process refunds for subscription renewals, we want you to know that your support genuinely makes a difference in advancing research worldwide."
Every reputable vendor that makes credit card charges knows how to reverse a false charge. They are scammers.

Ik ging na mijn inschrijving een boek van Maria grtever downloaden. Ik kreeg voor mijn geld alleen de titelpagina en daarna halve recensies, die overigens blijven komen: iedere dag krijg ik dezelfde pdf opgestuurd.

Without warning, the renewal cost double what it was the previous year. This feels like a predatory scam. Customer service is not responsive and refuses to refund. On top of everything, I don’t think it is useful, and there are better ways to share your work. I regret signing up.

I was charged $498 for an Academia Premium renewal I never authorized or intended to continue. The charge was flagged as fraud by American Express and was still pending when I contacted Academia.edu. Despite this, their customer support (Alberto) flatly refused to stop or refund the charge, instead sending me a canned response about how my money “supports global research.”

This is predatory billing at its worst. Academia.edu traps users in unwanted subscriptions, refuses legitimate refund requests, and hides behind empty mission statements. No serious company should operate this way.

I have already disputed the charge with Amex as fraud and permanently deleted my accounts with Academia.edu. As a CEO and researcher, I will also make sure colleagues know how Academia treats its users.
Warning: Do not pay for Academia Premium. Once they get your money, you will not get it back—even for unauthorized or fraudulent charges. Academia.edu should be ashamed of exploiting researchers like this.

Mein Abo war längst gekündigt (dachte ich zumindest), trotzdem wurde wieder abgebucht. Diesmal gekündigt und die Löschung meiner Daten beantragt. Der 1-€-Test wirkt verlockend, endet aber in einem schlecht ersichtlichen Abo-Beendung. Transparenz mangelhaft, Kündigung umständlich. Mein Tipp: Kein Probeabo abschließen!

I got the $1 intro subscription and then cancelled it midway through the trial period. I was subsequently charged for the full year's subscription, $159. I sent an email to the company, and I received a response that said they don't refund these subscriptions. I'm taking it to PayPal. I have also filed a complaint with the California AG office. I said the non-refund is a pattern, given the reviews on trustpilot. I urge all to file a complaint.

Allora mio figlio come tutti gli altri circa un anno fa ha aderito al mese di prova al costo di 1 €. Poi dopo il mese prelevarono circa 150 € senza quasi accorgersene, fra le centinaia di mail ricevute anche da loro, ma senza mai aver utilizzato questo servizio! Poi preso dai tanti problemi non aveva nemmeno pensato a bloccare i pagamenti e a cancellarsi, e ad inizio agosto di quest'anno, per cui poco tempo fa, si sono presi altri 250 euro circa senza nessuna comunicazione, o quantomeno forse finita nello spam. Gli ha mandata una mail e dalla risposta s'evince che i soldi non li restituiranno, ma da' l'impressione come fosse scritta da un robot, aldila' delle difficolta' a contattarli! Per cui leggendo cosi tanti commenti piu' o meno sullo stesso tono, è evidente una tecnica truffaldina, per cui propongo una denuncia collettiva alla Polizia Postale, perche' forse è l'unico modo per far smettere questa politica scorretta e mancanza di trasparenza, anche perche' sono a conoscenza che in Inghilterra le leggi sono molto severe verso questa tipologia di politiche commerciali. Che ne pensate, non sarebbe piu' efficace un'azione collettiva?

This company is the literal definition of scammers! They trick you into a free premium subscription plan for a first-time trial and require you to provide all your credit card details, even if you opt out of any recurring bills. They would still charge you immediately after the trial, and they disguise the charge as a subscription renewal without providing any prior notice. However, they are very humble enough to give you spamming mails every hour or so, whether you have written this scholarly material or that one!

They brag about their so-called 30-day refund window on the very first purchase, yet they created a loophole where they charge you after the trial subscription as a laid trap disguised as a subscription renewal, which, according to them, does not fall under the refund criteria! I have found numerous people from various websites and forums, such as Reddit, complaining that they were secretly charged by academia.edu a few years later, even though they had opted out of any subscriptions and, in some cases, even deleted their accounts. For the love of god, if you have given these sick, sick people your card details, contact your bank and get a new card so that they cannot ever charge you again illegally! I hope this entire anti-consumer scamming website and the people behind it face serious legal charges and rot in eternal damnation!

Edit: September 1st 2025, today I have received my full refund from academia.edu after persuading them further via their support ticket method and especially reminding them of their 30-day refund policy on first purchase and their shady anti-consumer practices, which can get them sued. They agreed in late August to process the refund, which I finally received today! I still have the same negative impression on them since their subscription model is a total laid trap. If you are looking for scholarly materials, try to avoid academia.edu premium and seek other fee options with excellent scholarly materials, such as Google Scholar, OATD, Research Gate and so on, where you will not need to subscribe to expensive monthly packages for getting some decent scholarly papers!

I was charged an annual fee with no notice whatsoever. The business model seems to be to scam people.

My credit card was charged $299 CAD for annual renewal with NO PRIOR NOTICE. The sum is outrageous. When I discovered this charge before the end of the first month, I requested a refund of 11/12 of the charge. Their reply today indicated they do not do refunds. THIS "SERVICE" IS NOTHING BUT A SCAM FOR RAISING MONEY. Avoid it and tell your friends.
