Be careful when you cancel, their website makes you have to confirm 2 or 3 times but if you dont know you might think you are finished. I know this as I was caught out. As soon as I saw an Auto renewal come through, thinking I was cancelled months back, I jumped straight on and cancelled fully and properly. While I am still unsure how they auto renewed on my cancelled credit card number, when I asked for a refund for my circumstance and cancellation same day. They have refused. This site offers little value and its payment practices are predatory at best. Do not use!

This site is a joke. They lure you in by sending countless emails saying that your name was mentioned in an recent article but to see by whom or to read the article or document you need to subscribe. Then after you subscribe, you get access to a random piece of nothing where is not your name mentioned and it ask you to confirm that is your name or not. Waste of time and money. Then to unsubscribe is another challenge...you are asked 5 or 6 times in different windows if you are really sure about unsubscribing and being warned that you will lose access to a lot of nothing.

Like many others I was charged without notification and then given the generic thank you for your support when requesting assistance. Nobody has assisted the site is a scam they steal money from subscribers and then send unhelpful messages. I’m requesting my account be deleted and data be sent to me but every time I request it I get crickets and nothing is done.

Des avis de renouvellement envoyés à la dernière minute du délai légal avec un intitulé en anglais trompeur et une petite mention écrite en tout petit au final d'un mail long comme le bras pour vous prévenir d'un prélèvement HT (bien évidemment c'est le TTC qui est prélevé).

They push you into a free premium plan for the first trial and then ask you to provide all your credit card information, even if you opt out of recurring billing. They charge you immediately after the trial period and disguise it as a subscription renewal without any prior notice. Yet, they're also so deceitful as to spam you every hour, regardless of whether you've written this or that academic material!

They boast about a supposed 30-day refund period for the initial purchase, but they've created a loophole by charging you as a renewal after the trial period, which, according to them, doesn't fall under their refund criteria! I've seen numerous people on various websites and forums like Reddit complaining about being secretly charged by academia.edu several years later, even deleting their accounts. For goodness sake, if you gave these sick people your card information, contact your bank and get a new card so they can never illegally charge you again! I hope this anti-consumer scam site and those behind it face serious legal charges and are damned forever!

Nel settembre 2024 ho attivato un abbonamento di 1 euro al mese, già il mese dopo mi venivano addebitati 129 euro per un upgrade ad abbondamento Premium, che non ho mai richiesto, e ieri mi vedo attivato un pagamento automatico di 291,58 euro. Per fortuna che Paypal è stato molto serio e mi rimborserà la cifra, dal momento che mi hanno truffato.

Mai ricevuto alcuna mail per abbonamento premium, ho pagato solo un euro per visualizzare un documento (peraltro totalmente inutile) e automaticamente qualche settimana dopo mi sono stati scalati circa 157€, chiesto rimborso a PayPal che mi è stato rifiutato, ho contattato ora l’assistenza e mi auguro di riuscire a ricevere un rimborso per un abbonamento non sottoscritto e non voluto e sopratutto per non aver ricevuto alcuna mail relativamente a tale abbonamento al fine di poter intervenire preventivamente.

Academia.edu has completely unauthorizedly, without any warning or receipt, charged me nearly 600 euros — twice, within a few minutes — without any reason or proof!

Even though you canceled, it automatically renews and steals your money. I'm glad that Academia.edu, like in my case, at least creates jobs with its unjust profits. But I laughed quite a bit at the polite nonsense that customer grievances contribute to science.

Unbeknownst to me, Academia increased the annual Premium price from $99 to $249 in 2024, after eight years of my paying $99. I didn't receive any warning of the 2024 price increase. If so, then I would have immediately cancelled. They just notified me that the price will increase yet again by 55% in 2025 to nearly $400 per year. They are out of their minds. Why isn't the Better Business Bureau going after them for predatory price jacking? This time, I cancelled the Premium membership, and they offered a 25% discount if I would reconsider. Please do not fall for it. ResearchGate or Google Scholar, though imperfect, are much better than Academia.

This is the worst company ever, I signed up because I thought it would be helpful for my studies. Only to be charged a auto renewal subscription without any authorization from me. Now these losers are refusing to refund my money. They are a scam and I will never use their services ever again and I will make everyone aware that I know in my college to never use them. Ones hard earned money just taken, it's fraud.

I joined Academia in 2014 and I began paying USD $ 99 for a Premium membership in 2022, then US$ 173 (2023) , US$ 249 (2024), and finally without any warning they charged me US$ 379 for 2025. I asked for an explanation (maybe the rise of AI increased their costs...) and this is the answer I got:
"I am sorry for any confusion or frustration around our current pricing structure. We are looking to expand our feature set, and we need to make sure we are prepared financially to make investments in our core product. Essentially, our previous subscription costs only allowed us to move forward with our current feature set, but our additional subscription fees will allow us to grow our organization enough to experiment and expand to new features.We should have sent you an email regarding this price increase before you were billed the new amount, though it may have gone to your spam folder."
I checked (spam and trash folders included) and I never got a warning email. I have got other mails from them though... So beware, if your renewal date is coming up soon.
Now I am requesting for a reversal of their abusive charge for an overpriced service (whose terms and conditions were draconian, as pointed out by some perspicacious colleagues of mine). In my view ResearchGate or Google scholar work better, for free. Academia is still not able to tell Soto-Andrade, from Soto and from Andrade, regarding my authors; names, for instance... I am planning to delete my account soon.

Stay away! Total scam - renew your subscription without warning and refuse refunds of EXORBITANT charge. I cancelled on the day of my renewal and they still charged me and are now refusing to refund me.

Ich hatte vor 2 Jahren ein Abo abgeschlossen, dieses aber nicht erneuert. Nun wurden von meiner Kreditkarte ohne Benachrichtigung 338 € abgebucht - ohne mich zu verständigen, ohne meine Einwilligung. Ein betrügerisches Unternehmen. Ich kann nur davor warnen!

I have given a two-star even though I have the same complaints as other people, exactly.
Academia.edu is still a platform for a lot of research works that otherwise we may never see, and access to academics and scholars from many countries presenting their findings.
Keep your free subscription and still read single papers as you need them, or download them.

Just don't fall for fanning your ego because they send you emails that others are looking at your work or including it in their research, because that is the lure.
Finally, there is no doubt this online site "support" is mainly run by bots with automated messages and largely absent oversight. Otherwise they would have more care for their subscribers, and would be more in tune with them by reviewing all their own practises of fee notification and not just siphoning off cash.

Subscriptions were cancelled but they continue to send charges through. This is nothing more than an app searching your name in journals and charging you hundreds of dollars per year for this. They won't cancel so I've had to block them on my credit card.
