The whole process was smooth, and I especially appreciated how flexible and understanding the team was when I needed to change my travel dates. They truly did their best to accommodate my request and make everything as easy and stress-free as possible.

I had a very disappointing experience with Backpacker Deals by Travello.
We booked a whale shark tour through them months in advance, but it was cancelled due to the season ending earlier than expected. Since the cancellation came from the provider—not us—we requested a refund. However, getting a response from them was extremely difficult.
After sending multiple emails and being ignored for quite some time, we finally heard back, only to be told they didn’t want to take responsibility. What followed was months of back-and-forth, wasting our time and patience.
It was only after raising the issue in legal terms that they agreed to refund part of the money—initially keeping a commission, which felt completely unfair given the circumstances. After continuing to push, we eventually managed to get a full refund.
Overall, the experience felt very unprofessional, with poor customer service and a lack of accountability. We paid for this tour well in advance and then had to wait months to recover our money.
I would not trust them again after this experience.

I booked, paid circa £2,000.00 and recieved booking confirmation (Date, Time & Reference numbers), a full booking reference, inc. additional insurance premiums from Backpacker Deals/Travello in Sept 2025 for 4 adults on the Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise (Operated by RealNZ) departing from Te Anau 7th March 2026. Backpacker Deals/Travello request that you confirm your booking 24hrs before trip departure via email, which I dutifully did. Roughly, 2hrs before departure on the 7th March I recieved a reply that stated 'no booking was held in my name or with my booking reference for this cruise'.
This was quite devastating, as this was our one highlight trip/adventure for our 3 weeks holiday in New Zealand.
RealNZ we're very helpful, but confirmed that the cruise was fully booked for the entire month of March and had been so for at least 3 months.
Backpacker Deals/Travello/TWIA refuse to accept any liabilty/responsibility and classed it as a 'Technical Error' and stated that 'this booking had not been confirmed on their platform' - irrespective of the issued booking reference, booking confirmation and/or full payment made.
TRAVELLERS BEWARE - you may not get what you paid for, so please be warned. I would highly recommend booking direct with the Tour Operator (like RealNZ) rather than through an agent, such as Backpacker Deals/Travello. Even though a full refund was issued and recieved. I have over 20 emails from Backpacker Deals, each one apolgising for what had happened , but each time deflecting responsibility. The last email I recieved offered a $50 coupon (goodwill payment) against any future booking that I may wish to make - I have politely declined their offer!

We booked our campervan through Backpacker Deals, with the van supplied by Auto Sleepers. Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing.
During the rental, we had water coming into the campervan from the rain making it unsuitable to use. Due to this issue, we were forced to return the van early, as it was not fit for purpose.
What made the situation worse was the lack of support from Backpacker Deals. Despite contacting them and explaining the seriousness of the issue, they were no help in resolving the situation and did not advocate for us as the booking agent. We were left to deal with the problem ourselves.
I would not recommend using Backpacker Deals if something goes wrong, as customer support was poor when we needed it most.

Easier to book directly with the tour operator. Save yourself the headache.
Booking with backpack deals is fine if your tour doesn't get cancelled but if it does prepare yourself for a never ending cycle of dead ends while trying to get a refund.
The support team responds quickly, if you can figure out how to contact them. The "help center" seems like it is still being built and so you have to search and search in order to find support.

This was the worst customer service experience I have ever had. When I made the booking, I received confirmation that the bond had been paid. However, I later started receiving several phone calls around 5–6pm demanding full payment for the motorhome one month in advance, otherwise I would lose my bond.
No clear explanation was provided, and no contract was sent to justify why the full amount had to be paid before even collecting the vehicle. This was particularly frustrating as this is not the first time I have hired this type of service. In previous bookings — both directly with the supplier and through a third party — payment was always made at the time of key collection, not weeks in advance.
The only response I received was: “Please check with the supplier.” After noticing a missed call showing the supplier’s name, I contacted Backpacker expecting clarification, but once again I was told to contact the supplier. This raises the question: what is the purpose of booking through an intermediary if all communication and clarification must be handled directly with the supplier?
The same issue occurred with the drop-off time. According to the supplier, drop-off could be done at 3pm, while the contract stated 10am. When I contacted Backpacker to clarify this discrepancy, the response was again: “Please speak to the supplier.”
To this day, I still do not understand why I should book through an intermediary when there is no clear communication or customer support, especially regarding critical matters such as full payment terms.

I booked a Skydiving in Queenstown , by NZone NZ thru Backpacker Deals for 3 people and read at their site “100% Guarantee if activity is canceled due to bad weather, they will fully refund payment.” Our skydiving was canceled due to strong winds and when we talked to NZone, they said my payment will be fully refunded by Backpacker Deals where I booked the skydiving. I started communicating with Travello Dec 30, to get my money back but it’s still ongoing as they said I purchased a standard ticket and they can only issue a store credit. I declined the store credit since I won’t be able to use it and the amount I paid was over NZ $1400. Eventually, they said they can only refund 80% of my money. I disputed that again and cited the message of 100% guarantee for a full refund if tour is canceled. They just wrote back and said they can refund 90% of my money. The 10% is for processing fees/ admin fees which I don’t understand why I should pay. Besides, admin fees normally run between 1-3% of cost.
I have read horror stories of people having bad experience dealing with Travello! I wish I knew this and I wish I didn’t trust the 100% guarantee message Backpacker Deals have on their website before I booked with them. This is also a lesson learned, be careful booking with third party vendors as they can use mixed messages. Read the fine prints multiple times. I’m still hoping they will refund all my money.
