It really feels cheap

It really feels cheap – especially during COVID. The staff sounded like they were forced to work in the call centres – so unprofessional. They just sounded so depressed, which is what you don’t want when you are under stress with a car problem. No assurance that your problem will be sorted. No emotional-support-skills trained into the call-handling agents. They sounded like they were just plucked off the streets. (But maybe we can blame COVID for that)

The upfront £35 excess was required too; which is off putting. I was about to pay – but thankfully my friend saved me. I got my car sorted without their help, which was miniscule.

You get the service-quality you paid for.

We’re sorry to hear about your car breakdown in April. When you renewed your policy last year, you chose the optional policy excess which reduced the premium accordingly and also meant that in the event of a breakdown the excess would need to be paid when you called the breakdown line.

Your policy has recently expired, but if you would like a quote for a new policy without the excess please call our sales office on 0800 112 4505 and we’ll be happy to provide one for you.

I think I've made a horrible mistake :-(

Took a punt and joined up after the RAC hit me with a 77% price increase. After paying I contacted customer service to ask if I get a membership pack with cards etc through the post...And that was 5 days ago with no reply. If that's the way new customers are treated Lord alone knows what will happen if I have a breakdown. I fear I may have to bite the bullet and go back to the RAC. Ridiculously expensive but at least they reply to emails.

Its another 2 days later and I still haven't had a response to my email. I don't think I can take the chance on this lot. It'll cost be but I think I have to go back to the RAC :-(

Broke down and first called at 17.10…

Broke down and first called at 17.10 hours. 20 miles from home. Ignition problem. Lady asked for MOT cert by email. I provided this. I phoned several times to be told the office would need to pass this, to go forward. After 30 mins, they did sanction it. . I enquired if I would be taken home ok. Lady assured me, yes, up to £40 in taxi if could not be sorted on roadside. Several calls later I was told, by 19.10 they’d be there at the very latest.
No pick up came. Cut a long story short after 5 hours a woman of 71 was told at 23.00 hours that I would not be taken home, no taxi and no, no reimbursement if I could get one myself.
The pick up truck arrived looking confused and lost. He did not even look under the bonnet. He was merely a pick up. Not a mechanic. Not the service we paid for. He explained of course Covid meant I could not sit in the cabin. Ok. So he would take my vehicle with me in it.
He phoned BREAKDOWN ASSIST and then something happened. He literally sat high up in his cabin and refused to talk after that. I saw him looking at google maps on his large screen sat nav. He was now not talking to me. Phoned Breakdown Assist, man was VERY VERY rude and talked over me very loudly. No assist was possible. Pick up said he was not able to take me home.
In total I had waited 6 hours and by now my phone was all but dead. It lasted a few mins more after trying to make two calls. A woman of 71 in the street at 11 pm without a phone to call around.
This ‘company’ may well get some people home 40%-50%. of the time. Would you trust which % you will fall into?? Up to you..... For me and my family we know.....

Make sure to check the small print!

When I broke down I called breakdown assist to get recovered. I was told I had to pay an excess BEFORE I could get any assistance. I was stuck in the middle of nowhere, on my own. I didn't have my wallet on me, so had no card to pay over the phone. I wasn't aware I had to pay an excess, although, I agreed I would pay it, and asked if I could pay it afterwards. I'm sure a bill could be sent to my address. I was told they couldn't do anything until I paid £35. I had to call a member of my family to get their card details to then call breakdown assist back to pay. I wouldn't want my girlfriend stuck on her own with these jobsworths refusing to help. Terrible service.

**In response to the reply from breakdown assist**

I have no problem with paying the excess, my problem is that you were quite happy to leave me stranded when I had no means of paying. Surely you could collect payment afterwards?? Would you have also left me if I was on the hard shoulder of a motorway?? I won't be calling your head office, nor will I be giving you another penny.

If you included the option for a policy excess when the policy was purchased in order to reduce the premium, that would mean in the event of a breakdown the excess needs to be paid when calling the breakdown line. No assistance provided

During the recent bad weather I slid off the side of the road into a ditch and became stuck. I phoned Breakdown Assist and after 30 mins (I kid you not) of being on the phone with various people I was told that my policy did not cover being stuck. Unfortunately on this occasion Breakdown Assist declined to actually assist. As you would expect we won’t be renewing.

The Breakdown Assist policy covers mechanical and electrical breakdowns but doesn’t cover accidents such as vehicles leaving the road as this is covered by your comprehensive motor insurance policy. When you rang the breakdown line this should have been confirmed straight away. 💥 WARNING 💥 Stay away from these backstreet cowboys.
When I phoned to say my car kept cutting out, they said they would send someone out to recover it, I told them the engine management light was on, would it be possible for the breakdown people to have a look at it, I was abruptly told no it will be recovered.
My policy was for breakdown not recovery.
The are very very unhelpful.

Worst cover ever to have

Worst cover ever to have, my car was broke down and I called for the rescue service they said someone will get there in an hour and got a text from a company called L J Transportation they said they will be there in 60 minutes so I paid the £35 excess and after waiting for 40 mins they rang me and said its going to be another 2 hours at least so I decided to find my own means of rescue and cancelled this, All of this was done within 15 mins and now the company is refusing to refund my excess and they are saying the LJ Transportation was on it's way when I cancelled it which is clearly a lie as they just told me on the phone that it takes atleast 2 hours for them to find a driver

Stressful breakdown experience

Our vehicle broke down on the 29 November. We spoke to customer services and gave all the usual details of the reg and breakdown over the phone. The recovery vehicle turned up around 1.5hrs later and was too small for our size of vehicle despite the correct details being given. Recovery company advised that a new truck would be sent in 20 minutes. We waited for a further 2hrs and still nothing. Called breakdown assist who advised that the next recovery would be approx 6pm. We called this in at 11.30am! We ended up paying for a private contractor who came within 30mins and got our driver off the roadside. We now have joy of trying to recover the money which has been an admin headache!

Rapid effective service

I purchased Breakdown Assist for my son. Most reviews of services like this appear to relate to the signing up process but yesterday we needed to test the service offered. My son was at his friends about 6 miles from home and noticed water / steam pouring out from the engine area. It was clearly a water pump failure. He called Breakdown Assist (BA) after arranging for a local garage to fix the issue. BA answered the phone immediately, agreed that the van needed to be transported rather than fixed at the roadside. They were happy to arrange a mutually convenient time for pickup and the van was transported to the garage at the agreed time. No issues at all. Thanks

Great for simple fixes in central locations

Having read previous reviews I cannot say I shared the same experience. If my case was more complex than it was then I cannot say whether or not this would be a 4* review or not... But as it was , the verdict is they were great for quick fixes when in central areas, be it near towns or cities.

Polite customer service, clear instruction throughout the process and the repair company that arrived were prompt and professional. Cannot fault them this time round.

Just tried to ask a question via online chat.I got no response even after 15 minutes of "Hello is anybody there?" I can take a warning sign when I see one. Will not be covering my car cover with Breakdown Assist.

Just a word of warning.i got a breakdown cover from a company called “Breakdown Assist”,on Christmas Eve in home bargin,my car locked, with handbag,keys,purse inside.i borrowed a phone managed to get telephone number of breakdown assist.explained the situation and got told I had to pay a £35 excess,fine I said. .we need payment now, but I cannot,my handbag is in the car. We can’t come them, but I’m stranded , that’s what I’ve got breakdown cover for. No you need to pay first.i will pay you when you get here. No. I’m cold,on my own.no money, no phone you really wouldn’t leave me stranded in a car park on Christmas Eve? Nothing I can do you need to pay first.at this point the very kind man , whose phone I had borrowed offered to pay, which he did and after hours someone turned up with no tools and had to go away again. Eventually I got home freezing and fed up, so don’t get breakdown cover from these cheaper firms , it’s a con .
