The British Newspaper Archive is the largest online collection of historical British and Irish newspaper pages, created through a partnership between Findmypast and the British Library to preserve, digitise and share one of the world’s most remarkable newspaper collections. Since launching in 2011, the project has transformed access to the British Library’s vast holdings, bringing millions of searchable newspaper pages to researchers, historians, family history enthusiasts and curious readers around the world. Spanning from the 1600s to the modern era and covering Britain, Ireland, the Commonwealth and beyond, the archive contains millions of stories that capture everyday life, major world events and everything in between. From birth, marriage and death notices to reports of political movements, sporting triumphs, court cases and wartime experiences, the collection offers a unique window into the past. Working from the British Library’s newspaper facilities at Boston Spa, Yorkshire, specialist scanning teams carefully digitise newspapers from both original paper volumes and microfilm, using advanced technology to preserve even the rarest and most fragile titles. Supported by partnerships with libraries, archives, publishers and technology providers, the British Newspaper Archive continues to grow, adding new pages every week and ensuring that history as it happened remains accessible for generations to come.

Frustrating to use
I rely on this site for my work and have been using it for almost ten years. The recent overhaul makes it much more long-winded to find what I'm looking for. The search facility was never great and now it's even worse. The site is frequently slow and sometimes not working at all (such as now as I write this). It's poor value for my annual subscription. It's also a huge shame that this valuable resource is so tricky to access and work with.
This is sad
This is sad. When I'm at home, I now have to pay to see all of the saved articles at I looked at in the public library. That's a pretty poor show. I definitely won't subscribe now.
Once Excellent - now Complete and Utter Rubbush…
I really should have cancelled my subscription but sadly off today so stuck with another 3 months of nonsense and banality. How I can key in "KIrkcaldy Railway Station" and get over 6 million hits going back to 1754 is beyond belief. The commas have no effect - I have Kirkcaldy or Railway or Station and I had no idea Kirkcaldy had moved to London. The new system is absolute rubbish and no attempts at all to remedy the shortcomings.
I appear to be having to add more information which I am now doing on the 6th October. As mentioned I keyed in Kirkcaldy Railway Station which I did tonight AGAIN! 109,088 this time and oldest was 1824 - great since the station opened in 1847. 26th August 1824 highlights Kirkcaldy.26th July 1826 highlights railway and 7th November 1829 of all things highlights stationer. Do you really think you have improved the system - just look at the Trust Pilot score - that should tell you everything about this upgrade. Hours of sifting before you can find what was once a simple task.

Please reinstate the previous British Newspaper Library search engine.
Before installing your new search system, it was an absolute joy search out Newspaper articles. Now it is an absolute nightmare. Nothing tallies or relates to the documentation that is being sought in the system. I have tried, in vain, to locate and download an article that I downloaded years ago at the British Newspaper Library. Previously, we were able to have quick general and overall review of all the newspapers. Now we are forced to search out articles in a narrow channel of newspaper documentation that is clearly unreliable, inaccurate and constricting. Please, please reinstate the previous serach engines. They were totally reliable and user-friendly. Please! Thanks, tahir

I have used this site for years, it was an extremely useful research tool. I am appalled at the changes. It's impossible to find anything anymore. It is also outrageous that access to articles that users previously paid for has now been revoked. Even when searching for events and articles that I know exist, finding them is now completely hit and miss. I will not be renewing my subscription, I will only access from the library from now on.
A great site ruined. …
They have changed what was a fantastic resource into one that’s pretty unmanageable now. I had saved research pages arranged under specific groupings for ease of use but now all my pages are listed separately without their group headings, making them near impossible to remember what research corresponded to each particular subject. Just awful site now.

I have been a member for several years and really enjoyed the experience. Since the so called upgrade everything i had saved has disappeared and actually looking for items is about as easy as filling in an application for Attendance Allowance! It seems to me and i am not alone in this, reading others experiences with this website is that everything logical and easy to understand is just swept under the carpet.
New interface has ruined a brilliant resource
I’ve subscribed to the British Newspaper Archive for around nine years, paying about £100 a year. Sadly, the recent interface update has made the site practically unusable. My bookmarked newspapers and descriptions have disappeared or been reduced to a basic list, while searching is now far more complicated and much less accurate. After nine years as a customer, I’ve cancelled my subscription and won’t be renewing.
Speedy, Helpful and Knowledgeable!
I was looking for a specific article, but couldn't view it without what seemed a monthly subscription. I messaged in to the helpdesk and received a really fast response from Marion.
Marion explained that if I scrolled further down, the option to buy just one article was available.
it was 50p and as such well worth the purchase.
Another problem I encountered was that I couldn't work out which was the contemporary article and which were later features, it was very difficult to tell from the description. Again, Marion speedily came to the rescue, and found the exact match for me.
What an excellent service with knowledgeable staff. Very, very pleased. Thank you SO much Marion.

New website experience
Wonder why they changed the format? Have subscribed for years and very much enjoyed using the site. Now it is more difficult to choose counties, newspapers, etc. I was concerned that I could no longer access my Bookmarks but Marion and Nicolle helpfully guided me through the new process to find them. I find the initial search page not fit for purpose and would prefer to go back to using a password to access my own account.

Stay away from the BNA.
As a user of the website since 2017, the recent upgrade to it absolutely destroyed under a decade of work. They've made the new version absolutely inoperable. Breaking stuff and charging us for the pleasure of it seems to be the way with all companies now, sadly.

Very much continuing to enjoy using the archive for my research and have been finding things easily. Some great finds regarding my family in local publications which I’ve been able to share. I like being able to review the new publications available to see if anything of interest to me.
Would like to see improvements on the text transcribed as it can mean I miss things at times.
Interesting to see that 'unprompted…
Interesting to see that 'unprompted reviews' giving BNA 5-stars for customer service (ie changing an email address) are actually prompted by BNA in a desperate attempt to improve the ratings. Surely that breaks Terms of Service, claiming a positive review is 'unprompted' when, in fact, people are being asked to give 5 stars...

Dreadful upgrade recently which has made the whole user experience very painful indeed. Removal of certain features around the dates , error messages saying limits have been exceeded and a substandard search engine. Sadly the collective feedback tells you a story and the standard responses from the BNA mean many subscribers will now seriously reconsider renewing their subscription.

Helpful Advice from Sophie
I have often used the British Newspaper Archive for research and have found it invaluable over the years. There have been recent changes to the site's format and charging process and these alterations initially looked prohibitive to future engagement. However, I spoke to Sophie (via email) through the archive's website and she explained clearly and patiently how the changes work and why they were implemented . Her response was very useful and have ensured that I not only will continue to use it but am able to get more out of it when I do.

The BNA site is unusable
The BNA site is unusable - too many pointless options that you have to scroll down to or over to reach, as well as wasted space on the left hand side of the screen that could be used better, so that some of the options fit onto the screen better. So many of the problems with the new format seem such rookie mistakes. You know what makes this new format even worse, is that it is no longer any fun. Unfortunately, I only recently renewed my subscription - would love a refund, as unless they make some changes, I can't bring myself to use the site again. So so disappointing, can't imagine how professional researchers must be feeling.
