A Real Review From Someone Who Passed
If you’re reading this, I really hope you choose to go with CEI/CTC. I dealt mostly with Theresa McCutcheon, and she was genuinely one of the most kind, courteous, and helpful people I’ve dealt with throughout this whole process. The few times I reached out with questions, she responded quickly, thoughtfully, and with more care than I ever expected. This is not some fake review. I’m a real person on a real journey trying to better myself, and having someone like Theresa actually help and care made a huge difference. I could not be more thankful.
I passed both of my exams: Business & Finance and Roofing Trade Knowledge. Both exams had questions that were relevant to the courses provided. One of the biggest things that stood out to me is that this course is actually up to date and kept relevant. That matters more than people realize, because a major issue with a lot of other courses out there is that the material feels old, outdated, or poorly maintained.
My books also came in great condition, and the packaging was clearly done with care. Before I purchased, I asked the sales rep if he could send me a screenshot of the course platform because I wanted to make sure it wasn’t cheap or outdated. He didn’t hesitate at all. He sent it over right away, while other companies refused to show me anything, even though we’re talking about a lot of money for something you haven’t even seen yet.
The course itself is fantastic. It does not feel cheap. It is well made, organized, and easy to follow. The lessons are audible, there are separate modules for each book, and each module is broken down by chapters so you can follow along and go back when needed. The highlighting is also very thorough, which is exactly what you want. On the exam, every second counts, and you need to be able to find answers quickly.
The practice exam is the main reason I would recommend this course without hesitation. It is unlike any other course I looked at, and trust me, I checked. The questions are relevant to the actual exam, and whether you get the answer right or wrong, it gives you the correct answer along with the source reference. It tells you the book, chapter, page, and depending on the question, it also gives the full math breakdown and index reference. I cannot stress enough how important that is. This is the best way to learn the material and learn where to find the answers during the exam.
If you’re still reading this, I’ll say it one more time: do yourself the favor and go with CEI/CTC. Choosing them was the best decision I made in this long journey, and I’m truly grateful I did.

This course was primarily government focused.
This course was primarily focused on legal basis of building codes and the authority of a county building department. That information is useful to those of us in a government capacity as a county building inspector but none of that is relevant to a licensed residential home inspector. The government provides all this content in the DHCD building inspector - residential course. I believe the content of this course would have been more beneficial if it actually focused on the responsibilities of a NRS inspection by a Virginia licensed home inspector. More specifically, what areas of the structure are to be inspected during a NRS inspection that the government does not address. Recommend including what criteria is to be used to evaluate the structure that is not a government responsibility. Additionally, what phase of construction would be appropriate for the NRS inspection to take place: footings, foundation, framing, plumbing rough in, mechanical rough in, electrical rough in, insulation, final plumbing, final mechanical, final electric, final building. The parts of the construction I think should be covered by NRS inspection that our government building department does not inspect includes: roofing, house wrap and cladding installation, cabinetry and finish work, flooring.

SCAM!
I just ordered the code book and no where does it state the year being sent! All it says when you order it is them sending you a standard NEC code book. No year described. I thought they would be sending the New 2023 code book since it’s been newly adopted in most states but NO! They send the old 2017! Useless I can’t use this, spent $600 and they say books can’t be returned. I think they are scamming people because they don’t say in the description it will be the 2017 version! Don’t spend your money here!!

After reviewing your order, we can confirm that the correct books were provided based on the package you selected at checkout. The package you purchased is specifically designed for the ICC G16 exam, and that exam exclusively permits the 2017 NEC code book — no other edition is allowed into the exam room. If a candidate arrives to take the G16 exam with any edition other than the 2017, they will not be permitted to sit for the exam. For that reason, we do not sell the 2023 NEC as part of this package, as it would not be accepted and would put our customers at a disadvantage on exam day. The exam-specific code book included in your package was selected based on the ICC G16 exam requirements, not the general state adoption of the 2023 code. We understand this may not have been clear at the time of purchase and we are always happy to assist customers in selecting the right package before ordering. Residential Course Review
I like the practice exams, however in the description it said that it would include a timer and I did not see that aspect of it. Your highlighting exercise and the test questions have a direct correlation. I'm concerned that when I take the test for real, the questions are not going to match your suggested highlights. We'll see. I wish there was an exam that was not tied to a specific book, so I can get practice with trying to find the right book to use for the question. All in all, it is an above average tutorial. The added reference material needs to be more readable. The page-by-page copies with no easy navigation tool makes them not useful. I ended up purchasing those books separately.

To clarify on the timer: our simulated practice exam does include a timer to mirror real testing conditions, so if that wasn't visible to you, we'd like to look into that further. We also want to make sure the correlation between highlights and test questions is giving you the practice you need, and we hear your concern about how closely those will match the real exam — that's valuable feedback for us to review.
On the book-specific practice format: our course is intentionally built this way to help you learn how to navigate and use each reference book effectively, since knowing where to find information quickly is a big part of exam success. That said, we understand the value of practicing book selection across a mixed set of questions, and we'll pass that suggestion along to our curriculum team.
We also hear you on the reference material's readability — page-by-page copies without navigation tools falls short of what we want to deliver, and that's on us. We're sorry it led you to purchase those books separately, and we'll take a hard look at improving that.

Absolutely horrible experience
Absolutely horrible experience. I paid for a webinar CE and was never sent a zoom link. I attempted to contact customer support for nearly an hour. I eventually reached someone and they let me know that since I was now over 30 minutes late, I would not be able to take the class. Ultimately, contractor training center made a mistake (which happens) and did nothing to correct. Not being able to reach customer support for an hour is unacceptable.
