This should've been a 5-star review
I attended the 2-week guitar building course and learned a lot from it. I went through the full process of building my own carved-top guitar, used a wide range of manual and electric woodworking tools, and learned not only from James and Dom, but also from seeing other students go through the same build process. The fact that I came away with a guitar that works is a big positive.
That said, the experience should have been better, especially given the price and the complexity of a 2-week build.
The main issue was course management. During our 2-week course, there were also 1-day and 1-week students being taught at the same time. We were six people on the 2-week course, plus additional students on shorter courses, which made the environment feel chaotic at times. I would not have minded this on its own, but it seemed to contribute to inconsistent guidance and quality-control issues.
James and Dom generally follow the same structure, but they also have different subjective ways of approaching tasks. As a result, it was possible to receive different instructions for the same stage of the build. For example, I was not initially told to draw a center line on the fretboard before cutting the fret slots, which later meant spending extra time trying to add it accurately.
The bigger concern was that some quality-control steps existed, but were not always followed or enforced properly. After receiving guidance on where to position the pickup routes and getting approval before cutting them, I only discovered during final assembly that there was a large visible gap between the neck pickup and the fretboard, which had to be creatively patched. This should have been caught much earlier.
The most serious issue was the neck angle. We did a dry clamp before gluing the neck and checked the angle, but after applying glue and clamping properly, the neck angle was not checked again. Possibly due to glue buildup, the final angle ended up steeper than intended. This was only discovered near the end of the course, once strings were fitted. By then, I had already been given the OK to also carve the back of the body-neck joint, and the guitar was essentially finished but not playable as intended.
To Dom’s credit, he spent a couple of hours ungluing and resetting the neck, which I genuinely appreciated. However, this also visibly affected the finish and beauty of the guitar, and the problem should have been caught much earlier in the process.
Overall, I learned a lot and I’m glad I built the guitar, but this could have been a 5-star experience. For me, it ended up as a 3-star course because of overcrowding, inconsistent guidance, and preventable process failures during critical build stages.
Setup course
I went to Crimson Guitars for the 1 day setup course and really enjoyed it. James and Matt were really helpful and I have come away from it feeling far more confident in messing around with the components of any electric guitar.
I will 100% be back as I loved it but also because my health band said my stress levels fell by 63% whilst I was there haha!
Wonderful service
Wonderful service, there was a slight issue with my order and it was rectified instantly and without friction! Would recommend them for tools. Really high quality.
My first stop for guitar tools
My first stop for guitar tools. I'm by no means a luthier, but I do like to setup my own guitars and basses, which means having a set of quality tools for adjusting truss rods, bridge saddles, etc. They are also very reasonably priced which is not something that can be said for all luthier suppliers.
Always transparent
Always transparent. And great communication and great products.
An excellent course
An excellent course. Building with other people was a new experience for me and really added to the class. The instructor was very knowledgeable and provided the guidance and information I was looking for. In the end I walked out with the confidence to tackle guitar building in my own shop.
Excellent products and delivered…
Excellent products and delivered immaculately wrapped.
Crimson Coloured my PRS
My order was placed just after the Christmas period and was delivered in under 2 weeks from England to Australia. Very prompt. The Stains i purchased worked well and seemed good quality, and the price was reasonable considering how ridiculous the cost of everything is these days.
Excellent all round.

Excellent experience
Prompt service, top quality tools and great videos. Crimson guitars ain't cheap and the reason is quality.
Top notch
The best tools and luthiery supplies and excellent customer service.
Everything arrived beautifully wrapped and a lot of care and attention had obviously been payed to my order.
They're super responsive and knowledgeable over the phone and happy to help with any questions you have.
My order was very slightly delayed (I was expecting a slight wait due to parts being manufactured to order) and they called me, unprompted, to apologise and threw a couple of extra bits and pieces in to say sorry. This was completely unnecessary but very much appreciated and shows the dedication to providing an excellent service.
I plan to spend all my money there.
