I will never use InstaVolt again

I will never use InstaVolt again. I visited my local charging station for the first time and was initially met with an error code after tapping my card and plugging in. I tried again, and the charge eventually worked — but my bank statement now shows two payments of £45. I've essentially been charged twice for one session.
I've contacted the company and am waiting for a response. If you're new to InstaVolt, I’d strongly recommend considering an alternative provider.

Hi,

When you initiate a charge via a card, a pre-authorisation fee of £15.00 or £45.00 (depending on the charger model) will be reserved on your card. This will be taken each time you tap your card to try to start a charge and is intended to validate the payment card and ensure that sufficient funds exist to complete a transaction.

If the charge was successful, the pre-authorisation amount will be cancelled and replaced with the actual amount you were charged for the electricity received. If your charge was unsuccessful, the amount will be returned automatically. All pre-authorisation amounts are released automatically by InstaVolt; depending on who you bank with, it may take 5-10 working days (or sooner) to reflect this.

Way too expensive

Way too expensive, tried it in Oswestry this morning at McDonald's, I only pre loaded it with £20 and it used £6 while I had a breakfast. My car didn't even register the charge so not sure what's happening. Either way I'll use up my credit and delete the account

We do offer an off-peak rate via the InstaVolt app or RFID card to help reduce charging costs during quieter hours (20:00 to 07:00).

I used the InstaVolt charger at the MacDonald’s in New Street, Andover

I used the InstaVolt charger at the MacDonald’s in New Street, Andover and I am so pleased I went there. Incredibly easy to use charger and at a very quick charge rate. I will definitely come here again, it’s local, very fast and easy to use. What more could you really want from a charger? The only negative is there is only one charger at this site, but there is plenty of parking, should you have to wait.

visited Bell Farm…

On Sunday 13th July I visited Bell Farm Way, Kempston, Bedford MK43 9SS to charge my EV.
The station internet is appalling, waiting 5 minute for a connection to use the app, getting impatient I presented my debit card, depositing £45.00.
fair enough it took just 40 minutes to recharge but no indication by phone or message on screen. I only found out through my car.
I contacted CS on Monday by email and phone, they had no idea where the station was and no idea how much my charge had cost !
When I asked when I would get my £45 deposit back I was told 5 WORKING DAYS.
This is the 2nd bad experience at this station and CS couldn't care less !!
I’ve since found out 50% charge cost nearly £40 !!

Hi Andrew, thank you for your review. We are sorry that you had issues with the app at our Bedford Link charging station.

We have no known issues with the app at this site so it is possible that it may have been a connectivity problem between your phone and the charger that prevented the charging session from being initiated. If you are ever in an area of poor signal, or if the app is struggling to connect to a charger, you could use an RFID card which links to your app account and can be used like a contactless card on the station. The card doesn’t rely on signal to work and when used, all your transaction data gets transferred to your app account.

The £45.00 pre-authorisation fee for card sessions is released automatically by InstaVolt after the session, the time it takes to show back in your available balance is dependant on your banking provider, it can take 5 working days but it's often a lot sooner.

We're sorry that you feel that our Customer Service Team did not care about your experience, they have spoken with you several times over phone and email, providing detailed breakdowns of your recent charging sessions to answer your queries regarding your session costs.

All good, works every time without any issues like most of the other charging points. It is a little more expensive, but the time and hassle you save compared with other apps is worth every penny.

Charged my works van yesterday and was charged the full £45 for half an hour from 43% to not even full charge. why so much I have not had this problem with other chargers.

Please note that when you initiate a charge using a contactless card, a pre-authorisation fee of either £15.00 or £45.00 (depending on the charger model) is temporarily reserved on your card. This is not a charge, but a standard banking hold to ensure sufficient funds are available.

If your session is successful, the correct amount for the electricity used will replace the pre-authorisation. If the session fails or is cancelled, the hold is released automatically—usually within 5–10 working days, depending on your bank.

If you would prefer to avoid these pre-authorisation fees in future, you can use our free InstaVolt app or InstaVolt RFID card, which do not require any pre-authorisation at all.

Welcome to the future

I charged my rental car in 20 minutes, giving me just enough time to enjoy the free cup of coffee. The chargers were well spaced out and marked with clear instructions explaining the multiple payment options. I chose to use the app and was rewarded with a 7% discount.
