We have looked into this for you and can see that during your charging session at Leominster, your vehicle received 12kWh and you were charged approximately £6 so it appears that you have been charged correctly at the Off Peak price of £0.54 per kWh. 1st time user… would strongly advise other 1st time users to read.

1st time use. Charged quickly. Relatively easy to sort out. However, nearly 12 hours later and I’ve just seen they’ve still kept the pre-authorisation of £45. This a terrible practice. Plenty of supermarkets pre auth £100 now for petrol but it’s cancelled instantly on compeltion and not lost from your bank. To read other reviews and see instavolt say they return in within 5-10 days is outrageous and stinks of holding that money someone and making further interest of it. Firstly, if they are going to do this it should be made extremely clear at point of sale. Secondly, they just shouldn’t be allowed to do it. This is not return and refund. That money should in all practical sense not leave the costumers account. I’m actually shocked they do this. Will avoid. Would advise all other 1st users to do the same if you don’t want to be out of pocket for a week.

PS You will now see the boiler player copy and paste reply from Instavolt about this issue. As if they’ve said anything that wasn’t basically said in the review. They repeated the 5-10 days thing … as if that makes it normal. But they did add… download our app to avoid us holding preventing access to your money for an extended period of time.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear of the inconvenienced you faced at our chargers.

When you initiate a charge via a card, a pre-authorisation fee of £15.00 or £45.00 (depending on the charger model) will be reserved on your card. This will be taken each time you tap your card to try to start a charge and is intended to validate the payment card and ensure that sufficient funds exist to complete a transaction. Depending on who you bank with you may see these as pending transactions or they will appear to have been taken from your account. 

If the charge was successful, the pre-authorisation amount will be cancelled and replaced with the actual amount you were charged for the electricity received. If your charge was unsuccessful, the amount will be returned automatically. All pre-authorisation amounts are released automatically by InstaVolt; depending on who you bank with, it may take 5-10 working days (or sooner) to reflect this.

If you use our chargers regularly and would like to work around the pre-authorisation fees, you could download our app and use it to start a charging session. As your payment card is already authenticated on the app, no pre-authorisation fees get taken when you charge via this method.

Off peak price makes sense

I’ve just had a really good experience at a new installation quite close to me in a McDonald’s, opting to benefit from the 54p off-peak rate. The chargers are rated at 160KW and since my EV is 800V capable it was pulling 159.7KW all the time I was there (40-80% top up charge), which only took 15 mins. Two main gripes: the normal peak rate is 87p which is exorbitant, and I just wish the chargers matched the 350KW power rating of rivals, in which case I could do 10-80% in the same time it took today. Higher prices + lower power isn’t a great mix.

I am amazed they can justify a £45 intial payment…

I am amazed they can justify a £45 initial charge, the first time I used these the first charge did not accept so had to use the charger next to it, I was then charged an initial £90 and took nearly 2 weeks to return to my bank, called customer service was told there is nothing they can do. I then unfortunately had to use them again at a services and it's been a week I'm still waiting for my refund, took an initial £45, calculated what I had used and called that from my bank a few days later but still left the £28 difference in my pending balance. Absolutely ridiculous. I will avoid this company at all costs in future

Hi, thank you for your review. If you are referring to the pre-authorisation fee that is temporarily taken when you charge via a credit or debit card, please note that these are released by InstaVolt as soon as the session is complete. The time it takes for the funds to show back in your available balance is dictated by the banking provider. We charge a standard rate per kWh (£0.87) with no subscription fees for everyone that uses our chargers. We also offer an off-peak rate of £0.54 via the app/RFID when charging between 20:00 and 07:00. We charge per kWh of electricity, the actual miles you would receive from a charge would be influenced by various external factors such as the vehicle model, external conditions, driving style etc. I hope this helps to address your concerns.

Our chargers require a £45 pre-authorisation hold when initiating a charge using a contactless card. This is not a fee but a temporary hold to ensure sufficient funds are available, any unused amount is automatically refunded by your bank within 5-10 working days. If your charge did not go ahead, the full £45 will also be returned to your account within that timeframe.

Disgraceful service

Be carful when using this app as they are fraudulent people and poor customer service can only get through via email as the phone line is only for people at the charging stations .

Me and my sister have 2 separate accounts with instavolt and we use a mutual bank card to top up our account . My sister has an outstanding debt on this card caused by an overpayment that did not go through . I have loaded my account with money fine using my account but when I used the mutual card with the debt on it , it instantly blocked my account.

I did not know at the time there was a debt on that card until it blocked me, I got in contact with instavolt who said , their ict team have detected 2 accounts under the same account , which is incorrect as we are 2 different people using 2 different , phones , emails , passwords.

The true reason for the block on my account was due to the fact that I used a card that already had a debt with another account which triggered my account to be blocked. Ict failed to pick this up and see that this is indeed 2 different accounts and refusing the unblock my account despite it being 2 separate peoples account . Basically trying to assigned the debt to me which is illegal may I say .

Absolutely ridiculous uneducated staff that work within the facility and they need to reassess the type of goons they have on ict because it laughable, they make their own assumptions because they do not know the facts. Luckily there is many other charging stations as they will not get my money again neither will my sister be paying the over charge 🤣

If one of the accounts has an outstanding balance for a charging session, all associated accounts will be temporarily disabled. This is necessary to prevent fraudulent activity and is always based on definitive data, not assumptions. We must respectfully disagree with the assertion that this constitutes fraudulent or illegal action. These measures are in line with standard industry practices and aim to maintain secure and reliable services for all our users. Our staff are thoroughly trained and competent in handling situations like these with integrity and transparency.

As soon as the outstanding balance has been paid, we can re-enable all linked accounts.

I recently had the opportunity to use…

I recently had the opportunity to use the InstaVolt charging station at Swindon Junction 16 M4, and I must say it is an excellent location. The site is quiet and conveniently situated within walking distance of Costa and a Greek Subway, which made the experience even more pleasant. Additionally, the night tariff is notably favorable. Overall, it was a great experience, and I look forward to using this facility again in the future.
