LivingWriter's monthly subscription sucks

LivingWriter has a monthly subscription cost of $10 And that’s USD. I live in Australia where it’s more than $15 AUD. I’ve owned Scrivener 3 since it was released in November, 2017. If I’d used LivingWriter for that long it would have cost $960 USD!!! I think I paid $30 for Scrivener. Subscription software is toxic. There’s no incentive for software makers to improve their product. The model just locks people in with sunk cost commitment and proprietary file formats.

As for saving to the cloud - this is not a virtue. I do that with Scrivener. I just save to a Dropbox folder. It’s not hard. I certainly wouldn’t want a program where I could only save my work to a special cloud subscription… and not to my hard drive??? That’s bad. Really bad. And why would I want an extra cloud subscription when I already have Dropbox and iCloud?

I'm pretty sure the ameredian 'writing' blog has been set up by LivingWriter to denigrate other writing programs and boost LivingWriter. Have fun trying to post a negative comment. I've tried a few times.

From Loyal Customer to Lost Customer in One Charge

I have been a loyal customer of Living Writer since 2022, but received no response when I requested a refund on the same day I was charged for the next year’s subscription — a payment made without any prior notification — while I am currently facing severe financial difficulties. There was no warning about the upcoming payment or the auto-renewal of my subscription.

One could argue that it is my responsibility to monitor the renewal date, but I am deeply disappointed and will unfortunately be looking for another app. This is not a customer-oriented business. Their auto-renewal system feels like a trap, and they show no interest in resolving customer issues or retaining loyal users. I have never experienced such disregard from any other subscription-based online service, and I am not willing to accept this as normal.

Perfect for a writer

Perfect for a writer. Spend som time to test it and watch tutorials. Be curious to what happens when you create the content. Then you wil see what LivingWriter really does.

I have tested this program online and the app-versions for iphone, ipad and macbook pro.

It is magnificent. I give LivingWriter five stars easy! You have to set up the content you want such as character cards, item, environment and so on, and even make your own cards. Once you do that, you can track each character throughout the document, easily click the link for the character in the text, and the character notes are there.

That is one example on how fluid it is. If you write fantasy, like me, and needs to track places, items and so on, you end up with a complete database as long as you make these info-cards on each item. For me that is perfect

I did also have questions during trial period. Support was quick to respond the next day, polite, friendly and taken my suggestions into account. They even updated a bug / quick fix i reported a couple of days after my report.

I am thrilled, actually.

I tried it, and I'm not going to buy it.

I tried it - thank goodness I didn't buy the 12 month sub right off the bat, because I would have regretted it in no time at all.
There is no formatting at all. And given that every wannabe writer has it drummed into them how important it is to format your MS according to industry standards, I am surprised that LivingWriter does zilch in this space.
I even tried adjusting the para spacing - eg: the 10pts after a para type spacing, but no - Living Writer makes the WHOLE PARA space out, giving you the same crowded visual mess. There is no para indent - just full indentation. I came away from the test convinced that the architects of this platform are not authors - they have to be tech nerds who think they've created something for writers, when the very basic functions we need when drafting a MS just aren't even there.
If it is a non-starter in such a basic requirement, it doesn't matter to me what or how many bells and whistles they build on the side of it --- it just can't be a writing space I'd ever consider comfortable. I got a headache just trying to make the imported text look like something other than a big crappy mess!

I will wait and see what Atticus can deliver down the track. In the meantime, Atticus does allow me to write in a cleanly formatted workspace, and I have no doubt Dave C will develop even more capabilities for it in the future.

Don't recommend this tool

In the beginning the tool looks great and easy to use, and they said you can always access your manuscripts, even if you cancel your subscription. Last month I had to cancel my subscription (temporarily) because I don't have the money for it now, but then I got a message saying I can only access my manuscripts for the next couple of months... That is unacceptable and I will never recommend this tool to anyone because of it! Plus, since the background can be dark, there is sometimes confusion when downloading the manuscripts. Sometimes a part of the text isn't visible (is white) while other parts are.

Great potential, weak execution

At the surface, the tool looked great. I started off as a free user to test functionality and see if it will be good for my manuscripts. Overtime I transferred around 40% of my active manuscripts into the tool and along with the main one I was preparing to publish.

This is when the issues began as my due date was drawing near. I pay for the subscription + AI extension.

The issues I have faced:
- The exports do not follow the formatting structure you have set, will it be DOCS, PDF or Amazon exports, all of those are extremely flawed. The alignment and text all over the place with fonts sizes wrong and even different fonts through the chapters and paragraphs. That's a total nightmare as after exports you need to do the formatting all over again, even worse than in the beginning of your raw drafts.
- Multiple issues with the AI tools some of those even appear to breach the terms of service that they advertise. It will be too technical to go deep to explain all the details. But I have provided all the detailed evidence to their support
- Support is non-existent, it takes weeks for them to answer a single email, no resolution or even estimate is provided and no service extended. So you're basically paying for the functionality that is nonexistent.

At the current state I would strongly recommend to stay away from the tool if you value your work and want some respect for it. Look for a more reliable partner. I'm already moving all my manuscripts as far away as possible from this tool and there are few alternatives which on the surface are looking good too.

It's sad, but the unrealized potential and ignoring of the issues will hurt the tool. With such attitude, their advertisement motto of "not going anywhere" will soon become "we're sorry, but we are shutting down".

Livingwriter is Scrivener's worst nightmare

I just started using Livingwriter and find it to be a game-changer. The user experience is extraordinary compared to other products I've used, which includes Scrivener. Livingwriter takes the book-writing game to a whole new level.
First, we have the user interface. The application offers many features and functionality, but they're tucked away in dropdowns so you're not visually overwhelmed by them when you're trying to work.
Livingwriter is intuitive to use, but there are how-to videos available for most of the options if there are still questions about how to use the system.
I did have a question for which there was no guidance in the knowledgebase, so I logged a ticket. The support team responded within 24 hours.
The developers at Livingwriter continuously update the system and allow users to see the roadmap so they can look forward to what's coming.
Scrivener, on the other hand, is not intuitive at all. And good luck getting a response from their support team if you have a question. They have yet to respond to the ticket I opened over a year ago. Because of its complexity, appalling lack of support, and outdated interface, I consider Scrivener to be little more than aging crapware.
The team that built Scrivener should be afraid because Livingwriter is poised to become its worst nightmare.

I have been trying to. Cancel living writer since I discovered a free program. Since I senty first cancellation request, I have been unable to log in. No Customer Service support, no acknowledgement of problem

Had been transferring all my word docs over to Living Writer and spent the weekend polishing and writing new copy when suddenly I noticed my copy had stopped syncing an hour prior. That had never happened before. I emailed the company as there is no phone contact and asked them to contact IT to retrieve. The next morning a customer service person responded with direction to go to revision history and no acknowledgement of the lack of syncing therefore no revision history for that timeframe. I continued to reach out to them and by the end of the day I asked for an apology for my loss of about 2000 words or more and there has never been another response to date. I started removing my content over the next two days and still no reply. The more I spent time revisiting and exploring the site the more I realize all my content had been deleted not just the original 2000 words. Buyer beware! They do not stand behind their product. They also did not acknowledge my request for my money back. After shock and pain from the original let down I realized MS Word still was an improvement in formatting, and some other features and I was better off without Living Writer. I hate to have to write this review but thought you all should protect yourself. Writing here is like giving birth to a baby born dead. Since I already own MS Word it is a much improved experience.

LivingWriter has been a godsend while…

LivingWriter has been a godsend while working on my historical thesis. The non-fiction templates, especially for PhD theses, helped me structure my research effectively. I love how I can organize my chapters and sub-chapters, making the daunting task of thesis writing more manageable. The ability to set goals has kept me on track with my deadlines. I also use the story elements feature to keep track of historical figures and events. While it seems like they gear towards fiction it seems like a great academic writing as well.

so i finally started using LivingWriter

so i finally started using LivingWriter and wow, it's been a lifesaver. with kids and a full-time job, finding time for my writing hobby was tough. but this app, it's so easy to use. i'm working on a children's book, 'Adventures in Dreamland', and the templates? super helpful. just wish the mobile app was a bit smoother, it lags sometimes. still, for a busy mom like me, it's been great.

i'm a freelance writer

i'm a freelance writer, and I've been using LivingWriter for a few months now. It's good for organizing articles and stuff, but honestly, I miss some of the features from other tools I used. The goal setting is neat, helps me keep track of my work load. Had a few bugs here and there, but nothing too major. Overall, it's a decent tool for writers like me.

I'm trying my hand at writing a novel, big change from my usual 9-5. It's been pretty useful, especially for keeping track of all my ideas and chapters. Had a bit of trouble figuring out some of the features, wish there was more help available. But overall, it's making this new journey a bit easier. If you're like me, trying something new, might be worth a shot

Probably the best writing app out there right now

Amazing application! I was using Scrivener before it, and tried Dabble, then landed on this one. It's smooth, amazing interface and plot boards allowed me to finish my first book in less than 6 months! Only con I would say is sometimes they don't hit their roadmap milestones.

Not fit for purpose

Not fit for purpose. The last straw, the sync completely deleting and replacing chapters with other chapters. Livingwriters' response was it shouldn't be happening and I should check the revisions history. This did mean I was able to recover full chapters from the previous day. But its not like it tells you when its happened so you have to go back through and search. Of course this only works for full chapters, all the times its done it to small pieces of text its impossible to keep track off.

Previously: A day where I couldn't log in- CS says sorry your region wasn't working but it is now.
The mobile app only letting you work on chapters. Can't access anything in a subfolder of the elements or plotting board- let alone edit them. CS says they will look into it.
When opening the desktop I'm watching loads of text just disappear - CS response- did I check the green sync on my mobile before I opened desktop? I hadn't checked specifically that time- but it was deleting work that I knew I had written the day before- so had obviously synced at some point- or if it hadn't. Why not?

So I had already stopped using the mobile app and was taking notes on my phone and adding in later at desktop. The reasons I chose Livingwriter over other systems was so I had a reliable backup on multiple devices and to use it on mobile. Both functions unreliable and as a result unusable

My page just suddenly demanded a reload even though I had internet and none of my other open pages demanded such a thing. After reloading I had to log in again which I did, Yet I lost all my content.

I went towards the reversions but each of them only had a max of 600 words even though I had like 2/3K of DETAILED content written out.

While trying to load one of the older versions one of them even went blank due to some type of bug.

And no, I'm not using a free version i'm paying for the premium subscription. Great service, Great.

Some good ideas, poor execution.

I really wanted to like Living Writer.

There are some nice ideas. The look and feel is simple and easy to navigate. Story elements, such as characters, are auto-filled in your text for easy reference once you create them, and being able to choose from different manuscript templates and story structures could be a time saver for some.

I was using LW for an interactive fiction project, so was looking for something that would enable me to have all my plotting, research, and worldbuilding in one place.

On the surface, it seems like it can do it all. But the problems quickly become apparent.

The free form plotting tool is a bit like Miro, except with none of the functionality - trying to move the plotting map with the mouse is impossible because of dead zones all over the place. Zoom is limited.. it's unusable for a serious project.

The desktop app sometimes doesn't open. I have the desktop app on two devices. On one, it's now stuck in an endless Google account login loop. On the other, my antivirus quarantined the .exe.

Then there's the saving/syncing issue. One big advantage LW has over Scrivener is it's cloud based. The problem is, it frequently does not sync, which means you lose work. This is the absolute deal breaker.

If the software was freemium, some of this might be forgivable, but you have to pay a monthly sub.

In the end, there are plenty of free tools that do everything better and more reliably.

Be warned if you are using it to work…

Be warned if you are using it to work off line. So disappointed that this platform does the one thing you don’t want a writing platform to do… it lost a huge chunk of my writing.
If you are working off line and then you connect to the internet. It doesn’t sync and loses what you’ve been working on. I lost about 3000 words.

I have used Living writer several months

I have used Living writer several hours a day for about three months having completed 75,000 words of a novel. Have four previous books published on KDP.

LW keeps promising an update fixing its bug ridden software. The software is unstable. The basic word processing is rudimentary and bug-ridden time and space does not allow getting into in detail. It for no reason changes sections of manuscript font types and size bold scattered about sentences sections individual words scattered even though the size and type are same as the rest correctly Times Bew Roman 12 point eben though it is not. Has wasted hours of my time. The auto save feature is unreliable. Has lost hours of my work. Have had to stop and start porting over to another program. Previous books used MS WORD without any problem except this book will be 100,000 plus word with many characters requiring authors software.

The app that WRITES an author’s ‘wrongs’!

I discovered LivingWriter on the SoftwareAdvice platform on last Saturday, I believe. I thoroughly enjoyed Software Advice because now, I have a relationship with them. I am an author battling the dreaded ‘writers block’. I have a concept for my next book but due to the intrepid attacks from writers block, I have been unsuccessful. In two months, I have written only 500-600 words, most of that is useless because none of it it fits together or ‘flows’ anywhere. It’s ‘Babel’. When I can’t call forth something that is meaningful, relevant and compelling, I feel like I have wasted my time and the commercial that says “I could have had a V8!” immediately comes to mind. It had gotten so bad that I even put my writing materials out of sight. So, when I found SoftwareAdvice, after I inquired about whether there were any CBL applications that could be helpful to first year law students. I looked at a couple, but nothing ‘jumped out at me’. Then, almost like an after thought, I inquired about applications which could support an author in developing a book concept. Once again, titles began scrolling down my screen. There was a comparison of two apps per screen view. It was app #2 that reached out to me. It was named ‘Living Writer’. I checked it out and I saw two unavoidable reasons why I just HAD TO try LivingWriter. First, it had a two week free trial and , as if to seal the deal, the subscription price was only $9.99! “WHERE DO I SIGN?!“ was my next thought. I got the app onto my phone and began rummaging through the features. I could write up to three or more manuscripts simultaneously and I could do it chapter by chapter! The aspect that truly bowled me over was the ‘Suggest A Feature’ selection, where I can ask them to add some feature that I would want to see as a part of the app. This was more than a ‘Suggestion Box’ area. It was kind of interactive because IT asked questions such as “In what way would this feature benefit your current writing style?” I thought this wasn’t merely profound. It was ingenious! I have been working on LivingWriter for almost a week, and while I’m limping along, still trying to ‘beat the block’, I HAVE started writing more regularly. In fact, I came up with a concept for a NEW book that I’m excited about and with the modality that LivingWriter possesses, I can work on my current, original book project AND I simply click on the new manuscript and I can write there. There is a DEFINITE benefit in having TWO potential pieces of art to mutually develop. If one idea doesn’t flow, the second idea can offer inspiration for me. I’m ecstatic about Living Writer and I am planning to write a ‘LOTTA-LOTTA good material with and because of it! LivingWriter may have, and quite possibly did, stop me from ending my pursuit of and passion for creative writing! Dear staff at hello@livingwriter YOU’RE THE BEST!!!!!
