LAW-BREAKING SCAM: MyPetCanvas.com Knowingly Commits Intellectual Property Infringement, Blatantly Lies About Generative AI Usage

MyPetCanvas.com (hereafter “MPC") is a scam of the highest degree. Not only are they producing Generative AI and calling it "art," but they are - without consumers' permission - submitting personal photos to GenAI Originators, which then receives those photos as proprietary information.

My experience: I hired MPC to create "digital art" of my two dogs. MPC quickly submitted back to me a set of four images that looked nothing like my dogs, and I could instantly tell they were AI. MPC’s AI algorithm wasn’t able to detect which breed of dog was in the photo, so each of the four renderings have completely different breeds. It is unimaginable that a “skilled artist” had “spent hours creating” this.

But to be certain, I plugged the four "art pieces" into SightEngine – the same system that insurance agents use to detect manipulated photos for fraud. As expected, all four of the images I received from MPC were flagged as being false digital representations made by AI Generator MidJourney (hereafter "MJ"). SightEngine stamped this with 99% certainty, which is the maximum possible.

This is a violation of MPC's license agreement with MJ. When submitting images to MJ, users have to agree that they own the photo, because once they submit it, it becomes "a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, sublicensable no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable copyright license to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, and distribute the Content You input into the Services, as well as any Assets produced by You through the Service."

MJ's terms and conditions clearly state that pictures can be submitted only if "you have all necessary rights and permission to provide this Content," that "you own all assets," and that "you may not violate the intellectual property rights of others," "you may not intentionally mislead recipients about their nature or source," "images remain owned by the original creators," and to "not upload others' private information."

What MPC is doing is not only a violation to their license, but it's also forbidden by law. Submitting intellectual property (ie, someone else's own personal photograph) into the public domain is IP Infringement.

MPC violates MJ's terms and breaks the law every time they produce one of these renderings without informing the customer that they're submitting personal pictures into a public algorithm.

I told MPC I wanted a refund. They stated that they'd give me a partial refund, but would keep $80 because their artist spent so much time on the work - even though these four pet portraits were produced almost immediately after I submitted payment.

I filed a chargeback with my credit card, explaining that I did not authorize MPC to submit my photo to go through any GenAI platform, and MPC did not have the legal right to pass the product off as their own, nor is it legal for them to "sell it back" to me without transparency that they used AI to create the image.

MPC is aware that their practices amount to fraud, which is why they deny using GenAI. But MPC does use Gen AI, and had I known that they used automated processes rather than actual art methods, I would not have purchased from them.

I understand that there is ongoing debate as to whether AI should be considered "art" in the first place. With MPC, those conversations are irrelevant in light of their practices that rise to the level of fraud. Specifically:

1) MPC has long-denied that they use GenAI, which is an outright lie. Directly lifted from their "About" page: "Your portrait is crafted by human artists — not by AI."

2) MPC claims that artists have spent hours "working full time and editing every little detail through Adobe Photoshop to create" the renderings. Again, this is an outright lie, and it wouldn't even be physically possible for a real artist to create four vastly different art pieces in less than a few hours.

3) GenAI outputs cannot legally be licensed or "owned." The end-product you receive from this company is now a public domain output, and it is illegal to "sell" this.

4) It is especially illegal (at least in the US) to attempt to sell someone's own intellectual property back to them.

So not only is MPC illegally selling intellectual property they don't own, but they're selling intellectual property back to the original owner - breaking the law on two different counts.

I won my chargeback after presenting this information.

MPC uses tactics that are invasive, illicit, unethical, and immoral. They are successful because they know how to prey on the ignorance of the greater general public regarding consumers' legal rights in regards to GenAI sales.

Do it - it's a beautiful way to memorialize your beloved pet!!

This was a great experience! They were very easy to work with when they showed you their progress and asked it you liked it or wanted changes - you can do this over and over until it's just what you wanted. For me, I wanted my dog and myself to look just like the picture and we did! It was fun, I highly recommend this - I love seeing my boy every day of my life since he is gone...

My Pet Canvas did a really nice job. It took several adjustmens on one portrait to get it fixed just right. In the end it looks great. Another portrait was good on the first try. A little frustrating getting to the final product on one portrait as one part would be fixed, but another part would be changed that didn't need to be changed. This went on for 8 reiterations. A bit of damage to the frame during shipping on one portrait. Might be worth buying the additional shipping insurance. In the end, both portraits look great.

You will cherish your portrait

My canvas portrait of my pet came out beautifully. Staff was wonderful in working with revisions with me and got me just what I wanted. I highly recommend getting a portrait of your pet. You will cherish it.

Blocked after posting about my Missing Portrait I previously posted about the issues…

I previously posted about the issues with this company, especially my missing second portrait that I paid for. Instead of helping me, they blocked me on Instagram and remain unresponsive-I even reached out to their founders who are active on social media yet are completely ignoring me. I also see that they delete negative comments from others on social as opposed to helping their customers. I am now resorting to calling my credit card company to fight for a refund. This is truly a terrible experience and I was so excited for these portraits. I would strongly encourage everyone to use a different company and first verify if they have a phone number with live support.

Blown away! Very pleased!

Product met my expectations! The design review and approval process went as promised and was very much appreciated. Honestly, when I first researched everything, I was skeptical the company could provide the level of service they described; I was completely blown away when they did exactly what they said they were going to do. It was a fabulous experience.

Friends Joy

The work that was done on my friends dog was fantastic. The photo is now hanging in their home and brings them so much joy when they see it. It was a Christmas present and quite nerve racking that I only received the item on the 24th of December when I was told it would arrive sooner. I guess it also had to do with our postal service. In any case, the work was beautiful and the owners are happy!

Great Value

Very easy process from uploading the initial photo to delivery of the final product. Adjustments were made quickly and accurately, and the final product is a great likeness of our pets. Arrived, as promised, on time for Christmas. Overall, an excellent value for the final product.

So disappointed

Not only did I pay more for Rush delivery, I received it after Christmas and I cried when I saw the terrible frame. This was supposed to be a Christmas present and I spent way more money than it was worth. Please don’t do it! Do your research! I didn’t and that’s on me. Now I have to take it to a framing shop and redo it before I give it to my son.

You Took My Money Knowing You Could Not Make Christmas Delivery

I would love to be able to say I knew if the canvas was awesome or not but I do not have the “PROMISED by Christmas” canvas. You knew you could not make it yet you continued to advertise the last day to make it which I was ahead of. A week or so after Christmas is just not the same. I have reached out for a discount as it looses it’s punch if not shared with family but the response is no.

Buyer beware - do not trust

Company is non responsive and does not keep commitments. Maybe they will respond to this review since they seem to delete negative comments on IG and ignore emails and inquiries through their website.

Edit: supplied customer information to mypetcanvas as this review was based on a real customer experience. To add, I personally watched multiple complaints from customers on IG posts disappear. No hate speech or anything close to offensive.
