I opened an ISA account on line and found it very easy. Even though it took 10 days to transfer my previous ISA from Virgin Money it was backdated.
Contacted customer services on numerous occasions and found them to be very helpful and polite. Could not fault their service. Checking my account on-line is very easy even though they do not have an app.
Can certainly recommend this Building Society.

Set up savings accounts for my children and told I could check their balances online. When I attempted to setup this online banking afterwards I am told it’s not possible due to security despite every other bank offering this. To check their balances I would have to go in store or ring and jump through a hundred hoops. Honestly ridiculous that they can be so ludicrously outdated in how they approach things.

On visiting my local branch to close joint account due to the loss of my wife .I had to provide death certicate plus 2 lots of identity. The staff seem totally untrained and spent 30 mins trying to close the account .Eventually they gave up and told me they would write to me. .Totally useless
Update 18 May
Today Unbelievably 3 letters arrive one addressed to my late wife thanking her for re starting her account!!!!!!! The other thanking me and the third requiring my signature to release the funds .insensitive,Incompetent, I just cannot believe this is the best Wales can do

I needed a new mortgage deal, as my existing one is ending soon. I contacted them and they booked an appointment with me to speak to their mortgage advisor. I was looking for comparison offers to look at how they stacked up next to our current mortgage company. A broker had recommended Principality as a good lender. So the appointment was booked and Principality emailed me twice for me to not forget our appointment (where they were to call me) and then they forgot to call me! I called them to ask if anyone was calling me. They kept me waiting a long while while they put me through to someone who would be able to do the appointment with me instead, as the person that should have called was apparently not in today. The mortgage advisor then clearly couldn’t be bothered, as she just said that she would book me another appointment. She was very rude when my wife and I wanted to arrange it for a time when we could both be on the call. She simply wanted it to fit her calendar (presumably for her to get the commission).
We left it there and said we’d stay with our current lender Virgin money. My advice, avoid Principality Building Society.

EDIT 2 June 2023: No Julie, unfortunately the Complaints Department totally misunderstood the complaint, provided false information, did not get back to me promptly, and now seem to be avoiding me. Clearly Principality treat customers with contempt.
Dreadful customer service and a bizarre contradictory unclear letter from the Complaints Department.
For background, I have been a saver for several years and leave my funds in savings accounts to accumulate in value.
Principality locked my account because apparently I have to re-verify my ID every few years.
I sent ID in the post (driving licence and proof of address) but this wasn't good enough and was returned.
They insisted I visit the branch to give my ID in person in order to reinstate my account. The lady at the branch asked how I was and I told her that I was OK but could have done without this nonsense. She asked how they could resolve my complaint and I told her I wanted to be compensated for parking (£1) and mileage costs (10 mile round trip). Her words were 'I'm sure we can work something out for you'.
However, I received a letter today from Head Office which contains the biggest load of contradictory nonsense I have ever read. I have had to read it 5 times and am still none the wiser!
Also their representative rang me at work yesterday and asked stupid security questions such as the account number on the passbook, the last transaction date and amount, etc. Not standard questions like my mother's maiden name or first pet. I obviously don't take my Principality savings passbook to work! She couldn't think of anything else so put me on hold to talk to her supervisor, then told me that she would get back to me.
In future I will use a proper building society, such as the Monmouthshire, Yorkshire, or Swansea Building Society, who I have never had any such problems with.

I have just received a email to say that my security password was weak and I have until April to go on line or my account or my account frozen and I will have to re -apply to get my account open,after calling customer service s they could not say the email was genuine .
So when you join your password is ok but two year s later it's not.
No two stage verification. No investment in IT and poor customer service s.shame it used to be a good building society

Highly recommend! Great Mortgage building society. They judge people individually and not by a score or one unsecured payment. We were referred by a broker and had no trouble. They helped us purchase our own home, and assessed us the way banks should!

I'm currently trying to get my Principality ISA moved to another provider, and two weeks after I started the process the funds still haven't arrived. It transpires that they're doing a manual transfer, sending the funds by cheque. I'm surprised they didn't chisel it into a stone tablet and put it on the back of a mule.

Avoid any dealings or association with Principality Building Society at your peril.
My property was valued by 3 independent valuers at £110,000 in 2022.
Two Building Society Surveyors valued the property at £110,000, the last in Jan 2023.
Principality Building Society Surveyor offered to step in for a buyer who didn’t like his first survey report in Jan 2023 and revalue the property down to £85,000. (a reduction of 22%)
The surveyor knew the property had been valued and sold in December 2022 at £110,000, and that, that buyer was unable to complete.
If you value your home, you need to avoid anyone who is getting a mortgage with Principality Building Society.
Unethical valuations demonstrate the lenders and their surveyors proclivity to deprive sellers of the true value of their home.
Its quite immoral and unscrupulous that lenders enable, even endorse and allow their surveyors to ignore facts and present alternative, non-comparable parameters, to suit their personal predictions that have no relationship to the actual circumstances.
It is obvious, as in this situation, that the Principality Building Society made no effort to ensure its valuer acted justly, properly or honourably.
Hopefully, my experience will save other people losing the true value of their homes, and having their properties down valued by Principality Building Society, who pay for and are responsible for the actions of their surveyors.
Unfortunately, the minimum rating that I can provide is one star, but acting so unethical does not qualify for any rating whatsoever.

Llanelli branch is fab. Always friendly happy to help. Called in to set up savings account for my grandson with my daughter. Sam is such a lovely lady. So helpful and had plenty of patience to explain the options. It's so nice to speak to someone face to face.

My mortgage is through Principality. Sadly I am stuck with them by the looks of it. Don't respond to complaints and queries. Happy to take over 2 months worth of payments without an notification or warning leaving me broke for the remained of the month. Terrible and Sadly I'm trapped with them.

I recently watched the Martin Lewis show (Jan 23) and he was recommending Principality as one of the top banks to offer savings accounts at the best rates of interest.
I decided to open an NHS online saver since I have served in the NHS for many years. However, I experienced nothing but problems as soon as began to apply because Principality stated my NHS email address was not valid? I tried several times but to no avail. Therefore, I contacted the bank on their memberfeedback email address. NO response ! I then emailed the main address whereby I finally did receive a response from a customer service clerk and she advised and tried to assist me and stated if I provide my payslip there would be no problem is setting up the account. However, email communication from her suddenly stopped? Did she forward my details to open the account ? Did she require anything else? I was left not knowing?? I sent a further email yesterday questioning what was required to open this account & how disappointed I was but....yes you guessed!!! NOTHING. No response.
I am so disappointed at the service or shall I say 'non-starter' service I received. After working in the NHS so long I thought this would be easy to set up & would be an ideal savings account but it proved so difficult & frustrating, especially when I thought I had finally found a clerk was going to help me open the account but then suddenly she just did not reply?
Basically, to all NHS workers out there!! You may encounter no problems setting up an account. However, my advice after my experience is "Don't bother" with Principality!! Invest your hard earned money elsewhere! Life is hard enough & we NHS workers simply don't need this terrible service.

Poor customer service. Don’t care about the customers need. Unskilled unprofessional staff. I do not recommend pricipality Morgage company to anyone. I have mortgages with them. But I am not happy at all.

We decided to move my wife's ISA from one bank (supermarket beginning with an S) to the Principality simply because the original bank offered .7% interest to existing customers but nearly 3% to new. The Principality had to write to her existing bank 5 times until they finally moved the money. The staff at the principality at Carmarthen West Wales have been fabulous, they have rang my wife three times to update her and again this morning to make sure she was happy that the money has now been transferred. Its like dealing with a bank in the good old days when customer service was paramount. We have dealt with three people at Carmarthen and all of the ladies have been wonderful. We are so impressed we are now looking to move our current accounts across to the Principality simply due to the fact that its a real bank with real people who care.

Recently opened a savings account with Principality. Part of the appeal of the account was being able to have more than 1 account holder.
Prior to application the website states needing to ring them to add an account holder. Proceeded with the application.
Rang them yesterday, was told to add an account holder required a postal form (available on the website) and not able to do over the phone. The guy I spoke to was trying to be helpful, and honestly seemed as confused as me as to why the website tells you to ring them when all they can do is signpost you to their forms.
Really unhelpful service and would’ve reconsidered opening the account if we’d realised the effort required to set up as a joint account.

A building society that is supposed to represent Wales with an offensive name and is impossible to receive funds from internationally. Their international transfers services is inadequate for a modern Wales. I was due to receive money from abroad on two occasions and it did not arrive but bounced back. Principality blamed the bank abroad. I told them they had all the correct information that Principality had provided me. Principality’s intermediary bank aka Barclays in Liverpool were unreachable. I called customer support in Cardiff several times. They would not put me through to speak with transactions or whatever directly to chase funds. Closed my account and opened one with NatWest. The funds came from abroad immediately. Principality is not fit for purpose. Inadequate to support a modern and international Wales.

Have been a loyal saver for a number of years. A simple transfer request was not executed correctly. Customer service could not have been less interested - no explanation or apology offered. Not even a refund of the fee levied. Strongly recommend any saver to think twice about having funds with this company
