Shrooly – Misleading, Predatory, and Potentially Fraudulent
I am deeply disappointed with Shrooly and feel compelled to warn others. What began as a promising crowdfunding campaign has devolved into a textbook case of misrepresentation and unethical business practices.
I initially backed Shrooly’s mushroom-growing device in good faith. Here’s what has transpired:
• I paid for the device as part of their campaign.
• Later, I was unexpectedly asked to pay additional fees for shipping—despite no mention of this up front.
• I paid, assuming this would finally result in delivery.
• To date, no device has been shipped.
• After claiming to have forefilled all their European orders, Shrooly is now refusing to ship the product unless I pay more—this time for shipping of so-called “free pods,” which were advertised as included.
This is a classic bait-and-switch.
When I requested a refund, they denied it—citing a 3-day refund window. A refund window that begins before a product is even shipped? That alone raises serious questions about the legality of their terms.
Their pattern of behavior—taking money, failing to deliver the product, inventing new charges, and refusing refunds—may constitute deceptive trade practices and potential fraud under consumer protection laws. I am currently documenting my case for escalation to relevant authorities, including consumer protection agencies and payment processors.
I strongly advise anyone considering a purchase or backing this company to proceed with extreme caution, or better yet—walk away.
This is not just bad service. It’s a breach of trust that may well cross the line into illegality.

We've got two batched of Oyster Mushrooms from one brick. The app could be better, but overall a positive experience!
No product, no refund!
Ordered a unit in December 2024 and still have yet to receive any estimate of ship date even though when I placed the order, they stated January/February 2025. I have written 3 times for a refund. A “cute” AI response follows sending me to a web of email/phone calls. Finally I get word that there are no refunds after 3 days after the order is placed. Oh, and this is crowd funded so I should be happy to even get to participate.

I have taken time to write the following events I experienced with purchases of shrooly units and pods, so you are aware when placing orders.
18/12/24-I ordered 2 units and 2 free Pods and paid by PayPal.
Only received one unit and no pods.
Emailed Shrooly and informed them. They emailed back and assured me the remaining items will be shipped soon.
Emailed them back & informed them that I am unavailable for most of January, and to send the remaining items by the end of January and this was confirmed.
30/12/24-They emailed to state that my order was marked as fulfilled and surprised to hear as I only received one item.
I informed them that I received one item and am waiting for the rest of my order.
31/12/24-They emailed to state they will investigate the issue and ensure the missing items are sent in February.
01/02/25- I chased my remaining order, and I was advised they have sent it, but provided no tracking information.
10/03- I emailed Shrooly with my disappointment in their poor services, lack of customer care and delivery service, which caused me immense stress and a lack of trust in their management team.
18/03-I received an apology email and PO for remaining items.
I replied and stated I DO NOT accept your apology.
20/03-“Be aware"; unauthorised payment of 0.01 Euro was taken from my PayPal account.
28/04-Surprised to receive an email with an upcoming order for 4 pods that I never placed.
30/04- They informed me that I have placed an order for 4 pods and payment of €76 has been taken out of my PayPal account.
01/05- I emailed and cancelled this order and informed PayPal.
06/05- I was informed they cannot cancel my order, and I must set up a new customer account to cancel my orders that I never placed.
Created a new customer account to deactivate my orders that they forced on me via my PayPal account.
I was shocked to hear they could not cancel the order I never placed, as it was already on its way to me.
I told them, “You are forcing this onto your customers, which is unacceptable.”
Requested my full money back immediately.
12/05-I received four pods that I cancelled via email.
13/05-I emailed “order & support” with my disappointment and demanded my full money back again. "awaiting a reply"
On their website, the return policy states no money is reimbursed for sent Pods.
On the 8th of May, I experienced a technical issue with one of the units.
I contacted support and informed them that the touch buttons on top of the unit were not working, and the water level sensor stated to refill the water container because it was empty, but it is full to the required level.
11/05-I sent a video illustrating the issues.
12/05-They have advised that it could be a firmware update. Although my unit's version is v2024.15-06 and up-to-date on he unit, it requires the newest firmware, “v2025-08-01”. This version can only be uploaded using USB-C cables.
This technical issue is not complete and is ongoing. Also, my other unit requires the newest firmware.
Original backer from 2022, looking forward to class action lawsuit.
I have been going back and forth with the abomination of a support team via Instagram for months. I received PART of my order, and am now being told that the full order that I placed will never be fulfilled. I refuse to accept that and want to return the partial order that I've received for a FULL refund. Their support team ignores this request and continues to offer a $46 refund for the missing item, no clue how they come up with that dollar amount.
I look forward to joining the class action lawsuit being built.
Although the device took long to come
Although the device took long to come, I am very happy with the service and response times. I have grown Lions mane and Oyster so far - Lions mane grew in a weird way which I was told was a variant species of the mushroom. Oyster was good.
Going to order my next set of pods to continue growing!
Shrooly worked great
Shrooly worked great growing my first batch of pink oyster mushrooms. It does a great job of controlling the humidity and lighting for the mushrooms and the app lets me know when it needs more water. Couldn’t have been easier.
Good product but room for improvement
The unit looks nice and performs well, with one notable exception: It won't register when there is water in the humidifier tank, so I just have to periodically check on it. That issue aside, I've successfully grown pink and yellow oyster mushrooms. It's easy to clean and straightforward to use. My main complaints are the water level issue and the current availability of mushrooms species: everything seems perpetually sold out except the oyster mushrooms. Also, they don't appear to offer replacement air filters on the website yet. Once these issues get sorted, this would be a 5-star system.

Very satisfied with quality and harvest
I received my Shrooly about three weeks ago. I started with a Pink Oyster pod and have had great success. My first flush went well and tasted great. During the cultivation I had a question and emailed the support team and actually got a response within a few hours.
I've just harvested my second flush and that one was a few days slower than the first flush but actually turned out to be a bigger harvest, surprisingly. I had another question during the second flush and emailed them again. This time I heard back about a day later, still with a very helpful response.
I've also emailed the team about shipping and credits and have had great help for that as well. Honestly I'm completely satisfied with all aspects so far. The build quality is great. The app is really well thought out and has great help articles and recipes. I honestly can't think of anything to complain about.
I know there's a lot of people disappointed in the long wait for these units, but that's part of the deal when you back a crowdfunding project. I've backed other projects that took several years, which is never ideal but that's just how it goes sometimes when a company is clearly trying to produce the quality they promised. And I'm proof that they are delivering, and that it's well worth it.
Waited 2 years to get the 3 devices I…
Waited 2 years to get the 3 devices I ordered. Came with no pods - I was forced to buy pods with they charge a $40 shipping fee. They force you into a subscription service with was never made clear when I purchased. No phone numbers to call and emails go unanswered for weeks

So far so good, we are just waiting for our prepaid pod credits to be usable. The first pod of Pink Oyster that came with the machine are on their second flush.
Worth the wait
It took a while to arrive after being a Kickstarter supporter, but overall I am happy. There's no doubt that a good amount of homegrown mushrooms is to be had from my Shrooly, and there's a reasonable amount of fun to be had in watching the cultivation happen. It's easy to use for sure. I look forward to more varieties, but when ordering new pods they come quick enough anyway. If you want to grow your own, then this is definitely the way forward.
Maintenance required, but worth it
After a long long wait, Shrooly is finally delivering product. I first heard of Shrooly about 2 years ago when they just had a prototype, the wait to actually get my device has been worth it.
Growing exotic mushrooms at home is really fun, the varieties available are hard to find at grocery stores and are very yummy and full of benefits.
The device does require some maintenance between grows, you have to thoroughly clean it and there are some consumable parts that need to be replaced like the filter and wick. Those parts are not expensive however.
Once you have your Shrooly, the cost of growing exotic mushrooms is a bit cheaper than buying them at the store and you get a beautiful display while you’re at it
The product is working as advertised
The product is working as advertised, was easy to assemble, and hasn't had any issues. The supply chain has been rough and lots of delays but with navigating the tariffs I can hardly blame Shrooly. Something they could improve on is the app, there have been a few minor hiccups with it but if you aren't using a mobile device it is a non-issue.

Cons:
- If a real good price- quality ratio is your main concern, maybe Shrooly isnt for you. Its too expensive for what it does.
- I totally dont get why there is no function for temperatur control. I miss that.
Pros:
- It looks good, I guess the designer likes apple-products
- Love the size. Just right for my desk. Dont expect too much though. You wont grow enough shrooms to feed your family.
- Air Flow, Humidity control and filtering work real well. Before I used the shrooly I often had problems with mold... not anymore :)
- The App works well and has a lot of possibilitys for finetuning.

Well done concept to let people grow mushrooms that they newer would be able to grow. I tried it with some Reishi mushrooms and it was super easy , will grow it again !
