Regular additional charges, poor customer service
I have had and account with Synchrony for 3 months. Each month there has been unexpected additional charges on my statement. Their customer service has been unable to remedy many of them. I have been charged interest, even though I have paid the full statement, balance, and charge a late fee when the issue of the electronic payment was on the Synchrony Bank side, not my personal bank. Each time that I have called customer service I have been unexpectedly cut off. After being cut off, the opportunity to review the customer service call is also missing. Horrible customer service and inability to resolve problems. If this does not resolve soon, I will be forced to close the account as I do not want to have on constantly monitor their improper practice practices.
Not a good company
We had a synchrony card for maybe two years. Used it primarily for medical expenses. I checked statements each month to make sure everything looked correct and for a while they did. Then one month I got a statement, and it showed the statement balance, and I made payments to pay off the balance per what the statement showed. The next month, I noticed there appeared to be an extra charge, and it was an interest charge, which made no sense seeing I paid the balance off. I called customer service and explained the statement I got and that I had paid the balance off to avoid interest. I had done this every month since getting the card. If the representative had looked at the payment history, then they would have seen where every month the card was paid off. The representative then went on to try and explain to me how getting an interest charge works. I told the representative, "I Just said I pay this card off every month so as not to carry a balance in order to avoid interest. I know how interest charges work. Why was I charged interest when my payments equaled the statement balance?" The representative still tried to explain how being charged interest is done. After explaining, they saw where there had been a charge of almost $10 on the card, which changed the statement balance. I told the representative I did not recognize this charge, and I wanted a fraud investigation done. I also told them to freeze the card until the investigation is over. I got a confirmation email the investigation was started and it could take 90 days to complete. I also got a confirmation email that the card was frozen, and no charges would go through. Not but three days after I froze the card, I get an email that there was another $10 charge on the account. I contacted synchrony and asked why this was allowed to be let through when I had frozen the card. They apologized, but would not reverse the charge. So I told them to go ahead and close the card. They then made me laugh by offering a $5 statement credit to keep the account open. WoW! Whoooopie! Five dollars statement credit when they allowed a charge to go through AFTER I froze the card. I declined and said to close it.
Synchrony needs to be careful. Charging interest after a balance is paid off because some unknown to me charge. Allowing a charge to go through when the card was frozen. Then offering a pathetic $5 statement credit to keep me as a customer. Nope. Goodbye Synchrony!
All Around Failure
Update: I've had this card for fewer than 3 months and used it a handful of times and have had the following experiences. Never have I ever had such horrendous experiences with a bank or credit card in my entire life.
Opened the card - transactions were denied on my FIRST use of the card. Spent hours being sent back and forth between Lowe's and Synchrony trying to recuperate the 20% off promo that was promised and part of the reason I opened the card.
FIRST payment to the card was denied. For absolutely no reason. And I was charged a late fee despite paying on time. They made a bunch of excuses and kept telling me to call my bank, but I am 100% sure the error was on their end. Put in the exact same information again - payment went through. However, that was another hour on the phone for their incompetence.
Made an online purchase yesterday. Payment went through, items were shipped. Got a message today that the transaction was declined. Spent another 45 minutes on the phone and was told that the LOWE'S credit card denied the LOWE's online transaction because they enter all their transactions individually which sets off fraud alerts and cancels the transactions. What a bunch of nonsensical bs. I was then told the hold was taken off and the purchase transaction approved, but the website still says that the payment failed and that I need to update the payment in order to get my items. **Also want to note that the SYNCHRONY "customer service" reps are the most apathetic people I have ever talked to - they will casually read off a script "thank you for being a valued customer" while ensuring that you feel anything BUT valued.
Is this supposed to be a legitimate business? How can you run a bank this way? What a failure of a system. Please fix your issues. Although at this point, I will pay off my balance and close my account. I don't have the time or the patience to constantly deal with this.
Absolutely horrible company
Absolutely horrible company. Never missed a payment, was never late and paid more than the minimum due. Kept lowering my credit limit, because I dont have a home financed. My home is paid for and has been for years! Expect your account to be closed out of the blue! Stay away from this company! You will regret ever doing business with them!
Designed to prevent customer's from logging in and making payments.
I setup my auto pay and next month when I tried to log back in, they say "you have not setup an account yet" so I register a new account and what do you know., I get taken right back into the same account I easily logged into last month.
They do this on purpose so their customer cant log in and miss payments.
Responsible Customer Punished
I am beyond frustrated with my experience with Synchrony Bank.
I opened my account in good faith and managed it responsibly from day one. Every single payment was made on time — not once was I late — and I consistently paid well above the minimum amount due. I did exactly what a customer is supposed to do: used the account responsibly and paid it down aggressively.
Then, after only three months, my account was suddenly closed without warning.
There was no meaningful explanation, no prior notice, and no attempt to work with me. After demonstrating perfect payment behavior and financial responsibility, I was blindsided. It feels completely unjustified and deeply disappointing to be penalized despite doing everything right.
Customer service offered little clarity beyond vague, scripted responses. There was no transparency about why the decision was made, and no real path to appeal or reconsideration. Being treated like a risk after proving consistent, on-time payments and paying more than required makes absolutely no sense.
The lack of communication, lack of transparency, and lack of basic customer respect is staggering. Closing an account after only three months — especially when the customer has an impeccable payment record — sends a very clear message about how little loyalty or responsible behavior matters.
This has been one of the most discouraging banking experiences I’ve ever had, and I would strongly encourage others to think carefully before opening an account here.
Bad move by Walmart partnering
Bad move by Walmart partnering. With this bank. They will charge you yes your own money return check because they didn’t clear the transaction fast. It’s high way robbery freaking $30. So I cancelled my card right away. I hope you like that $30 so much huh. Don’t even bank on them because they don’t have money they’re broke just like everybody else.

Well after many years of using this bank card w Amazon I fell for the hook line sink. Couple of months ago I spoke with the rep, wanting to switch my payments with Amazon so I did not have one large payment for monthly at once. She says oh sure you can make lesser payments it easier for you, did not explain there would be 29% interest charge. I was floored for the amount on my Amazon charge, How could this be possible? I did not spend this type of $? I called today and of course was 29% interest that was not explained on the original call. Lousy customer service! & thief. Cancelling was the best option.
Poor Bank Decisions
If I can go below a F that would be my grade for this bank, I had them for almost a year, never late, they closed my account without any warnings. I don’t need them, they need me more than I need them, I hope they go out of business and realize the mistakes behind it and think twice when they make decisions.

they freaking generated $90 in returned checks when i had plenty money on my account they closed my account but wait i previews spoke to one of the reps and set up autopayment still did it wrong and this was very stressful i have really good credit and didnt want to ruin it. spoke to them again and nothing ask for a manager and he didnt do crap as far as costomer service. i paid my account in full and i dont want to know anything about this bank again. never had an experience with other bank like this one.
Do not get their credit cards
I had an account with them that worked fine for months. It was a PayPal Cashback Mastercard. Since I got the card, I was traveling abroad, and for months, I had no issues. Then, a few weeks ago, at the beginning of February, they suspended my card, and I had to confirm purchases. It was fine, but really frustrating as at the time I didn't have good wifi and was using the card for food purchases and souvenirs. Really difficult and embarrassing when it was suspended in a shop right before the shop was closing. But I fixed that fairly easily. Then, today, the end of Feburary it was suspended again during a grocery run. I was checking out with a line behind me and my total was less than $15 ... it was like $11 something. And my card would not work. It was humiliating. Suspended. I had to call even though calls charge me. Fraud line sent me a link and the only options to confirm my identity were drivers ID, Green card, or militarty ID. I don't drive. I am not allowed to due to my medical history and blindness. I have my passport. Guess what they do not accept ... a passport ... literally the most secure type of ID since I had to do biometrics for that and spend a bunch of money to get my photo taken and get it approved. Yet ... they do not accept the most secure ID to prove my identity. I called again. The only way they could do it is if I mailed a copy of my passport to them (which I do not have time for, and would not have been easy to do when I am constantly moving around, traveling with no definitive end date for my travel). Do not even bother with this bank. They take forever to give you your credit back if you pay back in large chunks, they suspended your card for routine grocery payments, and their fraud proof doesn't even allow you to use the most secure ID. I have no idea why Paypal partnered with them. Makes me question if I should use Paypal full stop. They are an awful company.

Synchrony Bank is a "chrony" if you understand my meaning. I had a Lowes Home Improvement credit card issued by them. Every month they send me an email statement notification. Of course, this last past December, they concocted: "Lets not send an email statement notification for the month of December (obviously the busiest month for most of us with the holiday) so people can forget to make a payment and we can charge a late payment fee!" And, of course, there is no availability for a missed payment notification email. I am sure this happened to thousands. I closed my account immediately once I realized their scheme. Lowes should select another bank for their store credit card accounts.

Continued inability to access account (login not working). Considering closing all 3 accounts - not worth the frustration. Dinged for carrying balances by credit union, and can't make regular payments to Synchrony due to their broken website. AI assistant is useless because it can't answer questions.

If I could give them a zero, I would. Terrible customer service, terrible on line support and log in process is broken. They send you a code to confirm your identity but when you try to get back to the log in page, it shows that it’s expired.
They also have been hacked and have had multiple security breaches.
Avoid at all costs if possible.

Have many accounts with this company . Amazon, lowes , harbor freight, sams club, paypal. Never been late allways made my payments two or three weeks ahead of time and they started doing hit jobs on me . Lowering my credit limits affecting my credit scores time after time . They are worse then the mafia . Also with my lowes account was supposed to be a 12 months with no interest and they fluffed that. I am working to get rid of all my accounts with them. Take notice amazon , lowes , harbor freight , any company that has them as as a crefit card because i am cancelling you too. I will never do business with you again either

If you do business with this bank, do it at your own peril. I don’t leave bad reviews unless they are deserved. They closed the account for no reason. Customer service hangs up on you if you dare to question that something is wrong. Happened 2 times today. I’m glad the account is closed. After looking at their reviews here no one should do business with them. Ever. How can any bank that’s in business have over 2000 terrible reviews and no good reviews? They tell you that all calls are recorded but yet they can’t review previous calls to see they made a mistake. All they could say was “I’m sorry you were given bad information.”

I would have left them with a 0 star rating if I could. It's a terrible bank to deal with, especially when it comes to the Sam's World Elite Mastercard. Despite five years of paying the balance in full every month, they cut my credit line from $1,500 to $250, even though my credit score increased by over 100 points. Payments take a week to credit the account after posting, and their customer service is dreadful. They force you to listen to unnecessary information, then the automated teller asks if you want to repeat it. Even if I say no, it repeats the same information anyway. Disputing fraudulent or unauthorized charges is an unnecessarily complicated process.
My biggest surprise is why all these large corporations like Walmart, Sam's, and Amazon tolerate this nonsense unless they're receiving a significant discount to handle their credit card operations. However, I believe all these companies' images are being tarnished by association with Synchrony Bank.

Had a fraudulent occurrence and disputed the claims, paid my final balance, and closed the account/card. Then 3 months later I get a notification that my “payment is past due”
I open the account and I have a charge from the fraudulent activity that they “accidentally credited twice” so I technically owed the amount since they gave it back twice and multiple late fees. I called customer service, was transferred 8 times to multiple people who I could barely understand, before I got to a manager that was dismal at best, on top of the late fees they also stated i had to pay mandatory interest on the late fee on the credited charge that was their fault! So now next month I have to open the account that’s been closed for 3 months to pay the remaining interest that apparently I couldn’t pay today! Insane, horrid, would never open another account with them.
