Good service isn’t just about when it goes well
Ordered Lion’s Mane mushrooms from Urban. Prompt delivery, but to entirely the wrong address, courtesy of DPD.
Haidee was very responsive and understanding, and promised a replacement within 24 hours.

Contaminated spawn and confusing advice
I ordered a mushroom spawn bag from Urban Farm It. It arrived sealed and looked fine at first, but a few days later clear contamination appeared — the kind that takes time to develop, which means it must have been present before delivery.
When I contacted Urban Farm It, they refused a refund because their policy only covers issues reported within 24 hours. That doesn’t make sense for a living product, since contamination can take several days to become visible.
After some back and forth, they later told me the bag should have been kept frozen, but that instruction wasn’t provided anywhere, and refridgerating wouldn’t have fixed a bag that was already contaminated.
At best, it might have delayed the symptoms.
The product concept is great, but the quality control, unclear storage guidance, and rigid refund policy left me disappointed. I expected more transparency and accountability from a company specialising in cultivation supplies.
In response to their response below:
As I already told the customer service agent have many purchased bags from other people’s companies in my cupboard at the normal temperature for mushrooms that never get contaminated even after months unless I made a mistake myself with grain transfer and never to that level.
After the 8th email they told me this. I am copying word for word:
“Thanks for confirming.
Our storage advice generally for spawn is in a fridge between 2-5 degrees, excluding a few strains (for example Pink Oyster).
I hope this helps for future storage.”

Then obviously I replied that they hadn't included such instructions and the person ignored my feedback.
I used to be a regular customer. Seems like they don't value my custom.

We’re sorry that you were disappointed with your experience.
Our records show the issue was reported around a month after delivery, which is well beyond the timeframe in our terms and conditions, and as mentioned in our correspondence. These policies are in place so any concerns can be verified and resolved quickly.
We always aim to be as flexible as possible, but in this case the delay in report meant we couldn’t offer a refund or replacement - my apologies about this.
We’d also like to clarify that we never advised freezing the spawn — this appears to be a misunderstanding. The product label clearly states the correct spawn storage temperatures, and in this case the spawn had been kept at much higher temperatures than recommended, which can encourage the development of contamination.
We take product quality and feedback seriously and are always happy to offer guidance on storage and cultivation to ensure the best results.
More a rating of their delivery company…
More a rating of their delivery company covering Hampshire than them. I was not told that I need to be in to sign for delivery, I didn’t receive any card through the letter box to say that delivery had been attempted. After 2 failed delivery attempts I was told my only option was to collect in person. As this involved a 1 hour round trip I told them to bin the package. Urban Farm It customer service were unwilling or unable to help in any way.

Lion's Mane kit
Lion's Mane kit. 1 great first flush and a 360g mushroom. Then,... nothing. Block was in same place and same growing conditions (temperature and humidity controlled and monitored) but no second flush appeared. Very disappointed and £20 for a single (albeit large and extremely tasty) mushroom just isn't worth doing again. Customer service is very responsive but there's nothing that would make me want to spend time and money on another one. I'm still glad i got to try a large lion's mane mushroom though and turning it into a vegan 'steak' was amazing. If only you could buy those mushrooms in shops!!

Company rectified wrong order
Ordered the Oyster plugs. Was sent spawn instead. Company rectified it and sent plugs on express and apologised for the mistake.
Keep in mind that the customer service is via email, there is no number you can call and their office is closed on weekends.
Changed rating from earlier to reflect the fact that they rectified the problem.

Chestnut Mushroom kit
The "kit" consisted of a plastic bag presumably containing mushroom spawn and no instructions. I searched Urban farm it's website an You tube channel but there were no instructions. I finally found some advice on You tube but have had no success with growing any mushrooms. It is extremely disappointing as this was bought as a birthday present. I think this product was a waste of money and would never buy any products from this company again.

Very disappointed. I was given the Golden Oyster kit as a birthday present from my daughter. Followed the instructions EXACTLY but all I ended up with was a houseful of black flies! Feel very guilty as this wasn't a cheap purchase for my daughter.
CHANGED TO 5 STARS DUE TO EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH A REPLACEMENT KIT OF MY CHOICE OF BEING IMMEDIATELY DISPATCHED.

Not great
Some of the products look to have failed. When I ordered it I received notification that it had been sent. But I did not receive it for a long time after. I tried phoning but never got a reply. The instructions are not the best and there are many obvious improvements that could be made. The really shocking thing was that most of the time you needed what was essentially a laboratory clean room to successfully remove the chances of contamination. The after care was also quite specific and most ppl won't have that ability.

While contamination is always a potential risk in mushroom cultivation, an absolutely sterile environment is not essential. Many growers achieve great results using more basic home setups, and our range of grow guides available on our website covers a variety of approaches suited to different spaces and equipment levels.

In our response, we noted that you had planted it near a living tree, and we flagged an important point about this species — it is both parasitic and saprophytic, meaning it can infect and damage living trees. Because of this, we recommended avoiding planting near any trees you wish to keep healthy.
As this strain is intended for experienced growers familiar with its unique challenges, we encourage thorough research into the best cultivation methods.

A great idea that I would probably try again
A great idea that I would probably try again at some point. However, my Blue-grey oyster mushrooms took a long time to get started - more like 6 weeks rather than two even though they were in the warm under the stairs. Once they started I took them into the light (not direct light of course) and I've had one good crop but not sure I'll get another crop. It's like plants, they don't always do as they're told so it's no fault of Urban Farm-IT, it's more likely an operator error. Anyway, the mushrooms I did get were very tasty and as I said, I would perhaps try it all again but another day. I'm sure I'd be more successful at the second attempt.

It sounds like you created a great environment for your kit overall, and we're glad you were able to enjoy a tasty first crop. The growth timeline can sometimes vary depending on factors like temperature, humidity, and airflow - changes to these can affect how quickly the mycelium establishes and the mushrooms fruit. If the incubation temperature was on the lower end (or below) the recommended range of 20–25°C, that could explain why colonisation took a little longer to get going.
It's also normal for the mycelium to have a rest period of around 10 to 30 days between flushes, so if it hasn’t been too long since your first harvest, there’s still a good chance of seeing another flush come through.

One box worked, one didn’t.
I’ve had two sets of the pink oyster mushrooms from Urban Farm-It. The first time was successful although to be honest the process did involve a LOT of faffing about. I got several crops of mushrooms - all told enough for maybe three generous portions of mushrooms on toast. The second, recent experience was very different… Although I followed the instructions to the letter and exactly repeated what I’d done first time around the mycelium took months to develop. Once I moved to the fruiting stage absolutely nothing happened. I followed the various troubleshooting solutions but again, after many weeks all I harvested was a large colony of black flies. Eventually the whole thing went into the bin. Very disappointing.
**UPDATED: As well as the reply below, Urban Farm-It sent me a really nice and helpful email within hours of my posting this review. So definitely 5 STARS for their customer service (and an extra star added here!).

First class service and great product
Lifelong mushroom lover, first time grower. Lion's Mane is growing great, had some issue with mould on sticks supporting bag but sorted it quickly. I emailed Urban-Farm-It with some concerns and some questions and got responses same day. Lots of healthy mycelium (mushroom root system) in growing bag so I'm hoping for more than 2 flushes. Now ordered oyster mushroom growing kit and it has been dispatched just 2 hrs after placing order. Next thinking about thwir Wine cap mushrooms in garden bed. I'd advice to watch their videos before ordering so you know what's required for success.
I do this because I'm a foodie and standard white cap mushrooms just doesn't offer the flavours.

Not again!
I have had several mushroom growing kits before .. all successful, however this turned out to be a lot more hassle!
First ,it isn't clear that you have to get spawn separately.Second when I got it I then had to fiddle about with jugs of boiling water and hand mixing spawn into substrate. Also a lot of warnings re temp etc when the grey oysters I had ordered were in fact also fruiting in the wild.I live in a coolish house and never had problems with temp.All a bit OTT.for a 'hobby' kit

We also apologise if the voucher system used in our gift kits wasn’t as clear as it could have been. The reasoning behind sending spawn separately is explained in the 'Why we send your spawn separately' section of the grow guide booklet, and also on our website ('kit types explained' on the product listings). This approach helps ensure the spawn is as fresh and viable as possible when you're ready to start growing – especially important with kits that are intended as presents and might sit unused for a while. For those that are looking to get started right away, we do have kits with the bag of spawn included available for purchase on our website as well.
Regarding the growing process – although it might seem like there are a lot of specific instructions, they're designed to mimic the natural conditions mushrooms need to fruit. In the wild, species like grey oysters only produce mushrooms when their environment is just right. They're part of a much larger mycelial network that waits for perfect triggers like temperature, humidity, and airflow before producing mushrooms. Our kits try to recreate that environment indoors, which is why those factors are highlighted, even if your home already feels suitable.
The hot water and mixing steps are there to create a clean and nutrient-rich substrate, which helps reduce the risk of contamination and boost your chances of a strong yield. We understand this might feel like quite a bit for a hobby kit, especially compared to simpler 'ready-to-fruit' kits, and it’s certainly not for everyone. But it does appeal to growers who enjoy learning more about the process and getting hands-on with their cultivation.
