I've been doing writing battles for about a year and a half now, and of the ones I've tried Writing Battle is the best. Some of it is the amount of cool features they have and the dynamic of engagement in debrief, the tavern, etc, which I find super valuable.

They also take safety and security seriously. Out of all of the battle's I've taken part in, WB remains the only one that I was pretty sure was taking my data and identity as seriously as I was.

Best of all though, it's just fun. They have unique genres, I love the prompts, and reading everyone else's submissions teaches me so much.

Honestly? Great place.

The competition is super fun. You probably won't win, but that's not really the point. It's set up in a way that forces you to write a story you otherwise wouldn't have, with a whole community of writers willing to read what you write and offer feedback (mileage may vary as engagement beyond official feedback isn't guaranteed, but it's sort of a "get out what you put in" situation).

If your main goal is to win money, this isn't for you - the competition is huge, and there are a lot of great writers.

If you think your writing is brilliant and want to show off, this isn't for you - the competition is huge, and your work might be more niche or less original than you expect.

But if you want an excuse to write a new story that comes with a deadline to keep you honest and a huge community to bounce ideas off of? You'll be hard-pressed to find a better spot.

Writing Battle gave me the confidence and resources I needed to move my writing career along.

My desire to pursue creative writing sat dormant for years until I was served an ad on Instagram for Writing Battle (shout out to their digital marketing team). I decided to treat myself and sign up after reading that the peer feedback alone was worth the cost of admission, and I'm so glad I did.

In just one battle, I got access to a community of fellow aspiring writers, an endless stream of test prompts and a place to post them for peer feedback, reviews of my work from professional judges (authors, editors, and other industry professionals), and most importantly: confidence. I got to learn from my peers, hear what I needed to improve, and have my own opinions on my work validated.

The staff of Writing Battle is small but mighty. They respond kindly to questions and are always happy to help. I think people forget that WB is a labor of love for its founders and employees. Yes, it is a paid service, but not an impersonal one. Sharing my work is a deeply vulnerable experience, but so is being a shepherd of other creators' works. The WB staff understands that responsibility and always does what they think is right to make the competition a fair and safe space for aspiring writers like me to find their footing and push themselves further.

Could not recommend Writing Battle enough!

This is such a fun contest, and has inspired me to write so many stories with the unique prompt combinations. The peer feedback is fab, and having the opportunity to judge and feedback on other stories has been fun and rewarding. I’ve improved my writing and learned so much through this comp, and I've also connected with a wonderful community of writers. The team who run it are incredibly kind and incredibly hard working. Looking forward to the next (imminent) battle!

I've been participating in WB since 2023. If you are looking for a contest that is fun and engaging, I can highly recommend it.

Writers are challenged to create stories in weird and wacky genres, using specific prompts. It's a challenge unlike any other.

The Peer Battles have the added element of judging other stories and giving feedback - an excellent opportunity to learn.

Through WB, I found a wonderful community of writer friends. I continue to improve my craft and continue to read countless amazing stories.

Writing Battle has restored my love and joy of writing. It's a creative twist on the writing battle, the community feedback is supportive and awesome, and above anything else, it has helped shape my personality to endure critical feedback. They admins always try to keep the community informed and lead with a positive voice. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this writing competition!

I actually like Writing Battle. It helped me get out of a writing slump by giving me prompts that I would never have thought to write about. I suppose if you don't score high, you could be disgruntled but like all judging, it can be subjective. I know when I write something that's fairly decent, or it sucks. I'm in it to expand my brain. And in my experience, fellow writers have been extremely kind and supportive. It's extremely affordable too.

This site's "professional judges" claimed my very original idea was not original while choosing a story with an overused premise as being better. It is a very ignorant and biased platform.

Writing Battle is like High School. It's super cliquey. The same people on the forum overtake the entire experience, and even if their story is no good, everyone gushes over them as if they are prom king/queen. Do yourself a favor. Save your money and generate your own prompts for practice.

Writing Battle has an extremely toxic forum where veteran players are able to bully and ridicule new players, and if the new players try to stand up for themselves and engage, they will have the moderators flag the forum and lock it down so no new discussion will be conducted.

When it comes to the judging a lot of these judges have no prior professional writing experience and it shows based off of the stories which win and make it to the final rounds. I have also heard the owners pays the judges by Canadian minimum wage standards, so that would make sense.

What the other reviews said. Plus, rules change constantly. Admin will tell you the changes are necessary, but they're only necessary to assuage the complainers. Refunds won't be given when the competition you sign up for suddenly changes into a different beast. The forums can be very toxic. Complainers are very loud and aggressive and admin jumps through hoops to address every complaint. This shows a lack of commitment to their own product. I've written some stories I like here, and when I first joined it was a lot of fun, but it's definitely all about the money now.
And, no, I'm not using my real name. I'm signed up for more comps and don't want the backlash. Admin has been known to ban people who disagree with him.

Bills itself as a "supportive community of writers" but operates as a money-grab contest with low odds, poorly qualified judges, and an extremely toxic forum culture.

Upon review of this year's pro judging panel (2026), many of these contracted judges have questionable literary backgrounds or a limited scope of knowledge. Feedback can range from inane to cruel.

In addition, several players report passive-aggressive communications and inappropriate emails. Complaints about owner "Max" intimidating or discouraging certain players while favoring others. Would urge writers to avoid this site, especially those just starting out and looking for quality feedback.

This contest has nothing to offer writers of any experience; seasoned writers will be frustrated by the pedantic level of discourse and emotional outbursts, new writers will not receive useful advice. Your money will be better spent elsewhere.

Rude, incompetent customer service and unnecessary fees because the owner apparently didn't realise businesses cost money.

I ticked no boxes, accepted no terms or conditions and when asking them to not contact me, the passive aggressiveness was unmistakable and the argument in Max Bjork's manner shows someone I do not want to be connected with in any manner.
