I rented a 4x4 for a trip from Namibia…

I rented a 4x4 for a trip from Namibia to South Africa. I was given wrong information and they tried to blame me for it, which cost additional time, money, and stress.

The good:
The pickup in Windhoek went smoothly. The Britz partner is Sani. The Sani desk had my reservation and called Britz, who sent someone to take me to their office nearby.
The car was in good shape and performed well with no issues
Upon arrival in Cape Town a rep named Carlin reached out to coordinate drop off time.

The above is why I gave 3 stars.

The Bad:
In Windhoek I was instructed to take the car to Sani at Cape Town airport
I was also told the car could be returned dusty. Carlin said it wasn’t a requirement but said I had options to have it washed or could tip his car wash guy?? Totally unclear what all that means if it wasn’t in the contract.
I brought the car to Sani. They made several mistakes I was later told. They accepted the car even after I told them it was from Britz, they said “we know.” They inspected and said everything was fine. They said I’d get my deposit back in 21 days.
I was in an Uber half way back to the city when Carlin reaches me on WhatsApp and asks if the time for drop off is still good. I told him I dropped it off and he tells me it was the wrong place. I explained I followed the instructions and Sani accepted it. He says it’s their partner company and Britz is in a depot nearby.

THE EGREGIOUSLY BAD:
THE BRITZ PARTNER MADE A HUGE MISTAKE AND HE TELLS ME IF I DONT RETURN IT BY 4pm I’M IN BREACH OF THE CONTRACT.

They screwed up, and tell me it’s my fault. I had to turn the Uber around, go back to Sani, and drive it to the depot. I had max coverage but it’s mostly a scam because I still had to pay for a scratch on a car that already had them. It wasn’t taken from my deposit, I had to pay. While Sani told me I’d get it back in 21 days, Carlin said since I dropped off in a different country it was assumed the full deposit would be returned, so I had to pay right then? Just awful communication.

Then for the second time had to get an uber back to town.

Massive communication, training, and customer service failures across the board.

Adventure to Nxai Pan, Botswana March 2025

We are now back in Gaborone for just over a week and I would like to take this opportunity to express the following re: our 4 X4 rental through Britz.

What an absolute pleasure it was to work with your team at Britz Campers Maun.
BK is a charming, well spoken gentleman who went the extra mile making sure we were able to get out to the depot to receive the Toyota Camper and ensure all our needs were seen to and sorted out. His thorough explanation and checking ensured nothing was left to chance.
Naledi and Lesego were both very professional, smiling and friendly and very thorough in going through the vehicle inspection and handover.

We will most definitely recommend Britz Vehicle rentals and especially your fully kitted out vehicles in Maun. The camping trip was fantastic and the vehicle was well above our expectations.

From start to finish the service and professional help from Aadilah Moosa, in the booking division, to handing back the vehicle was a joy to experience.
We will be back knowing the service and quality is top class.

Thank you and please record how professional and peasant all your employees were in Maun.

Tyres completely worn: unsafe situation! Do not rent from them!

Rented a full equipped 4x4 for 1 week and discovered after 1 day (we’re suppossed to travel from CPT to Namibia) that most tyres were badly worn. Despite to the fact that the technical report said that the tyres were ok (they mentioned a 8 mm profile), most of them were completely worn (I feel sorry I could not upload pics to make it more clear…). We decided to cancel our trip up north as driving off road had become an unsafe matter. We contacted Britz and eventually they changed the vehicle. So, as we lost 2 days we had to change our trip and eventually returned the 4x4 a few days later. Holiday ruined!. The manager understood our feelings and offered us a ride back to CPT and advised us to get in touch with their offices. Well, after several emails a 2 days discount was offered as courtesy as according to them we agreed with the contract which stated that the 4x4 was in good condition (the fine print). Never will use this company again!

It took two hours + to collect the car. There is complete incompetence. They are very inflexible and Rip you off when they have a chance *** WARNING DO NOT USE****

We hired two 4x4 double cab Toyota Hilux!
am extremely dissatisfied with the experience I had with Britz Car Rental South Africa. From the very beginning, it was a nightmare. They had nobody to meet us at the airport, and no transport was arranged for our group of seven. This left us stranded and frustrated right from the start.

When we finally arrived at the 4x4 depot, things didn't get any better. There was a delay of 1.5 hours because they had not installed the fridge we had pre-booked, and the vehicles were not equipped with border crossing and safety equipment as promised. These delays set a terrible tone for our entire trip.

To make matters worse, we were given two dangerous vehicles that were far from legally roadworthy. The state of these vehicles was shocking. The entire front bumper fell off one of them, and it was clear that these vehicles had been in previous accidents. It looked like they had attempted to make repairs using wood screws and masking tape!

But the issues didn't stop there. We had to endure a high-pitched continuous whistling sound for the entire duration of our drive. This came from the 15 holes drilled in the roof of the vehicles for the rooftop tents. These holes were never properly sealed, and the noise was so unbearable that we had to purchase earplugs.

The troubles continued with the fridge, which stopped working after just 24 hours of rental. We paid a significant amount for this fridge, and it was a complete waste of money. Then, one of the vehicle's batteries died, leaving us stranded three hours away from any town. We had to improvise a solution, using the battery from the broken fridge.

As if all of this wasn't enough, the back door on the pickup truck they provided had a sliding drawer system for our gear. However, the door wouldn't open, which meant we had no access to our camera equipment for the first 48 hours on a private game reserve with clients from the USA. This meant they missed out on capturing memories from their first-ever safari.

We immediately contacted Britz for help, but their response was shocking. Despite numerous calls and emails, their customer care refused to address our issues or make any effort to reinstate or reimburse us for the loss of days, experiences, and memories.

This level of service is completely unacceptable, especially for travel agents and clients from abroad who trust Britz for a safe and enjoyable experience. I strongly advise anyone considering their services to think twice. Petrol "scam" .... creative but bad

Petrol "scam" at returning the car...After lengthy emails the management admitted that the 2nd tank was not full on pickup and reimbursed half of the requested amount..

After 3 weeks, instead of feeling ashamed of it all...just no replies anymore at all.

Also they tried wrongly to charge after hour fee ...

I will continue to get the full refund, even by laywer as matter of principle.

Bottom line, don't use this company !

Latest : Leslie Matthews the managing director of Britz intervened, apologized and the rest of 348 rand is now returned on my ccard

Terrible clients service, no refunds in terms of cancelation even before the cancelation deadline

I've booked an RV for the end of April 2020.
I decided to cancel the reservation on 13 March, when the free cancelation with a full refund was still in place.
I still haven't got a refund since then. It's been 3,5 months already!
I understand that it's pandemic now, but I also work in the travel industry and our company makes the compensations to the clients, even if we work remotely.
Besides, I've asked for a refund before a lockdown happened in South Afrika.
Britz 4x4 obviously doesn't value its clients.
Terrible service.
