Extremely disappointing experience with Canvey Carriages
We recently contacted Canvey Carriages regarding the Jeep Renegade.
We were genuinely interested in purchasing the vehicle and, to demonstrate that, had already arranged finance through a broker before travelling to the dealership.
Had everything gone well, we fully intended to purchase the Jeep and were even considering trading our Land Rover in for another vehicle from the dealership.
Unfortunately, what followed was an extremely disappointing experience that left us completely unable to trust the dealership.
Before travelling, we called the dealership to confirm that the Jeep would be available to view. We were told that it was away being prepared but would be back in time for us to view it the following day.
When we arrived, we could clearly see the distinctive orange Jeep — but it was not on the dealer's forecourt. It was parked on the forecourt of the building opposite, with no "for sale" sign displayed. The engine was also warm to the touch.
When we were given the keys, the first thing we noticed was that the vehicle had approximately 2,000 more miles on it than the mileage stated in the advert. When we questioned this, we were told that was the mileage when they purchased it. That may explain how they acquired it, but it does not explain why the vehicle was subsequently advertised with 2,000 fewer miles.
We had also checked the advisories from the vehicle's latest MOT, particularly those relating to the suspension and tyres. These were safety-related concerns that we specifically asked to be addressed before we would proceed with the purchase.
We were told the tyres had been replaced. However, the tyres we were shown clearly did not appear to be new. Whatever their remaining legal tread, they certainly did not look like recently fitted tyres. We were told the suspension would be checked, but that if the dealer decided it did not need replacing, they would not do the work.
The condition of the vehicle itself raised further concerns. There appeared to be thick mud, or possibly tar, across parts of the exterior, while the interior was dirty and covered in dog hair. Given that we had specifically been told the vehicle had been away being prepared the previous day, its condition did not tally with what we had been told.
At this point we had serious concerns, but because we genuinely wanted the vehicle, we still test drove it thoroughly. We checked the steering, acceleration, braking, handling and general operation, and the vehicle appeared to drive satisfactorily.
We therefore went back into the dealership prepared to negotiate over the issues we had found. Unfortunately, this was where the experience became even more disappointing.
There was no willingness to discuss the additional 2,000 miles, despite the vehicle having been advertised with a lower mileage. We were essentially given the impression that the price was fixed and that it was a case of take it or leave it.
We asked whether a fresh 12-month MOT could be provided for our peace of mind. This was refused.
We again raised the tyres and suspension. We were told once again that the tyres had been done, despite what we had observed, and that the suspension would only be dealt with if the dealer personally decided it required work.
We then raised the finance broker arrangements. Our broker had already been in contact with the dealership and, following discussions, had waived their own fee and negotiated the dealer's fee down to £199. Initially, we had been told that using a broker could result in fees of between £400 and £600.
We were therefore extremely surprised when we were told that nobody at the dealership had heard of or spoken to our broker.
Our broker has records confirming that contact had taken place and that they deal with this dealership regularly. To us, this directly contradicted what we were being told at the dealership.
Even more concerning was the fact that the fee we were supposedly expected to pay seemed to change during the conversation. The amount being quoted kept changing, leaving us with the distinct impression that the figure was being made up as the conversation progressed.
We had travelled a considerable distance, spent significant time arranging the finance and viewing the vehicle, and incurred the cost of the journey, all because we genuinely intended to buy the Jeep. We did not arrive looking for reasons not to purchase it, quite the opposite.
However, all of the above issues completely destroyed our confidence in the dealership.
We left feeling insulted, misled and thoroughly disappointed.
If Canvey Carriages is prepared to address the issues properly and make a genuine effort to put things right, we would be happy to reconsider this review.
At present, however, based on our experience, we cannot recommend them.
