My wife and I went to see the lights…
My wife and I went to see the lights with our granddaughter and decided have something to eat at Merlin’s what a mistake that was service was average. Ordered the Celtic burger a filled panini and a margarita pizza for my Granddaughter with all the food came fries We waited for 35 minutes for the food when it arrived the the burger was so over cooked it was not edible the fries were so under cooked I think they just defrosted them and put the fries in the bowl forgetting they had to be cooked. My wife’s panini was supposed to be mozzarella and pesto but could not find any mozzarella only pesto puddles of it and the pizza was under cooked and soggy my granddaughter is 18 months and said no for the first time. I am a retired chef and I can’t believe how bad the food was and it wasn’t cheap never again.
Dylans Health Club - total rip off!
After several years of being a member, the quality of service continues to completely nosedive at Dylans Gym. Continued closures, out of service areas, equipment and water stations and a 'not our problem' approach from senior management leaves both staff on the ground and members visibly exasperated.
This month's saga of closures without any kind of offer of reduction in billing, despite being the most expensive facilities in the area by a country mile, is a bridge too far for me! I'll be looking at membership for Bannatyne's Newport or Nuffield Health Cwmbran, and saving myself both the grief and a small fortune!
Disappointing Stay and Poor Response from Guest Relations
We recently stayed at the Celtic Manor Resort and, sadly, our experience did not reflect the high standards we expected.
After completing online check-in and entering our card details (which appeared to go through), we received a call at around 9:20 pm asking my husband to come down to reception because the system hadn’t saved our payment. We were already in bed at the time, so this was very inconvenient.
Our room on the 10th floor also had a continuous fan or air conditioning noise that made it difficult to sleep. I reported this issue, but it was logged incorrectly, and nothing was resolved during our stay.
At check-out, the manager kindly waived our parking charge and offered a future discount, but we later discovered that breakfast—which was included in our booking—had been charged to us in error. I contacted guest relations several times, including the assistant front of house, Deborah Reynolds-Forde, but have received no reply or refund.
It’s disappointing that such a well-known resort has not followed up or resolved this issue, especially after multiple polite attempts to contact them. The setting and facilities are lovely, but the lack of response and accountability have left us very disappointed.

Don’t book any vouchers with the spa it is a nightmare trying to book anything or even speak to someone. They were supposed to call me back to book but no call back. The phone number doesn’t work due to technical difficulties please call back. I will never book anything at the Celtic Manor again absolutely hopeless !

Avoid organised nights e.g. firework displays unless you want to pay paper money for a small, poorly mixed hot chocolate or want them to sell spaces in your private pod to strangers. All about milking you for money...
Spa Treatment - dire experience - best avoid.
I received a spa treatment voucher from my children as a birthday present. (i am 70) The choice of treatments for men is very limited. I enquired on booking for a masseur (male). Not available. I have travelled across Europe and Asia staying at 5* hotels and i have to say this experience was one of the worst. Men do not have a chaging room in the spa, I was asked if i wanted a robe - glad i said yes otherwise i would have been walking around in swim shorts. I booked a whole body massage. Was told to leave my swim shorts on for the treatment. The masseuse was clearly uncomfortable having to do the treatment, spent most of the time on my feet and calves. Completly avoided any contact from just above the knee to my back. Did my back, did not do my shoulders or chest when I was asked to turn over and gave the worst head massage ever. Not once did she say what part she was gouing to massage and at one time i was left laying there not being treated, with my eyes covered. I later realised she was heating the oil, but she could equally have been checking her phone for messages. I am so glad i did not pay - do not use these facilities, especially if you are a man. I did not feel relaxed or enjoy the expereince. If you are going to offer a mens grooming spa service make sure your staff are capable of being professional in service delivery Will never go there again - and i live locally
Extra mile
I’ve got to say — the concierge team at the Celtic Manor are absolutely fantastic.
When I checked in, I realised I’d forgotten my bow tie, so I mentioned it at reception and they said, “No problem, we’ll sort that for you.”
All good… until I got ready later, after a cracking shower, and realised I’d also somehow forgotten my shoes. So, down I went to concierge again, stood there in my trainers explaining my situation. They just smiled and said, “Leave it with us, we’ll see what we can do.”
Sure enough, not long after — knock on the door, room 508 — and there’s a lovely gentleman standing there holding a pair of size 10 shiny black shoes, saving the day.
Now that’s what you call 5-star service. 👏
worst massage
Recently visited the Forum Spa for a Swedish massage and was unfortunately disappointed with the experience. The session felt rushed and lacked the attention to detail I expected from a venue of your reputation. The therapist seemed to be going through the motions, which made it difficult to relax or feel the benefits of the massage. I hope this feedback helps improve future services, as I was looking forward to a more tailored and thorough experience.
Next ill try Newport Beauty & Holistic Clinic, Usk Wellness Centre, The Parkgate Hotel Spa with good reputations and therapists names
Meh expensive but not premium!
Driving range is good and the olive tree is good! Went to an event that was absolutely nightmare!
Great service by Matt at Merlin’s Bar
Great service by Matt at Merlin’s Bar, food was fantastic and came piping hot.
Bar manager lack of service
We had some drinks and asked for a ham sandwich as the menu offered classic sandwiches and I believe ham is a classic sandwich. The guy inbthenohotonehonpurportrdvto becs manager said no we could not have ham sandwiches. My wife went to the reception to find a manager and they said of course you can have a ham sandwich. This guy in the bar needs to shape up and do his job and be customer orientated in a hotel of this class
I recently stayed at this hotel …
I recently stayed at this hotel and, while the property itself has great potential, my overall experience was quite disappointing.
To start with, every morning started with a queue for breakfast, if you didn’t turn up before 8:30, often more than five minutes just to be seated. For a five-star establishment, this shouldn’t be the case. On top of that, a service charge is automatically added to bills at the bar and restaurant without asking, which wouldn’t be such a problem if the service matched the price – unfortunately, it really doesn’t.
The staircases are not well maintained, as shown in the photos. It seems that since most people use the lift, little effort has been made to keep them in good condition.
The facilities look impressive at first glance, with a pool, spa and a variety of activities such as laser combat, archery, golf, and high ropes. However, access is limited and unnecessarily restricted. For example, the pool can only be used twice per stay in 45-minute slots, and needs to be booked in advance. As for the activities, they all come with an extra charge, even for hotel guests staying a week or longer. This constant sense of being charged for every little thing makes the experience feel less premium and more like being squeezed for every penny.
To be fair, the buildings, grounds, and equipment are well-kept – you can see the effort put into the facilities. But it’s let down by the poor service, restrictive policies, and additional fees. Even parking isn’t included, adding another £20 a night to your bill.
It’s a real shame because this could be a truly excellent five-star resort if the management improved the guest experience and focused on value rather than add-ons. As it stands, I’d rate it around 3 to 4 stars at best.
Leisure members treated poorly
This resort does not treat long standing leisure members well. Constant issues. The latest being 4 months of trying to access the online members account area for bookings & events. Being told that IT are looking in to it but being ignored with no resolution to the issue provided & no accountability taken by them but they are more than happy to take your money every month!
I had a voucher gifted to me for my…
I had a voucher gifted to me for my birthday that unfortunately it expired before I was able to use it. Totally my fault but sometimes life throws curveballs. I contacted CMR to enquire about extending it, willing to pay any admin fee. I had a response telling me that wasn’t going to happen and when I enquired on two more occasions (thank you, Lowri) on my statutory rights, I have had no further response. As a small business owner who also issues gift vouchers, I always try to accommodate customers where possible. I would have expected a business of CMR’s calibre to show the same level of flexibility and customer care. Hugely disappointing and judging by the reviews, I’m not the only one who feels this way. Why do we let large companies get away with behaviour like this?
As an update, I wanted to thank CMR for reaching out to me and offering to extend my voucher. The gesture is hugely appreciated.
Awful cleanliness and racist staff !!
Awful cleanliness and racist staff !!
Me and partner stayed over night at this hotel and we were treated with nothing but disrespect and contempt.
For starters they gave us a room in which was not cleaned; hairs on the bed, red stain on toilet seat and coffee stain on wall. When we complained, they did not even offer us a different room only kicked us out of the dirty one to clean it.
Staff did not greet/treat us with the same enthusiasm as the other guests. Staff then were making shady remarks about dress codes and assumptions about how we wouldn’t be able to afford a fancier restaurant. Me and my partner are black/Asian and we felt the discrimination as soon as we spoke to the front desk.
When complained to the head office, they did not rectify the issue only offered percentage off our next stay. Which we explained we would never come back.
Avoid at all costs !!!!
Derisory Experience - Byron was extremely poor
- Failed to provide the room type I had booked and instead gave me a queen room. Did not flag this to me, I had to instigate this conversation.
- Requested a refund, Byron (the member of staff) said I would need to come to the desk tomorrow and raise the issue. Failing to take accountability and creating a poor impression. Showed next to zero empathy
- Byron couldn't find my details on the system supposedly and left me waiting at the desk for over 10 mins. He went on to say it was a spelling error (even though I booked this).
- Offered a bottle of wine as an apology for failing to give me the room I had booked which was one of the highest grade rooms. I don't drink and the wine costs £6
- Found a clump of hair in the shower (see photo attached).
- Given a refund of £70. All in all £76 back for a room I paid x6 times this amount and didn't even get.
Going downhill…
I've been a member here for around 20 years and every year it gets worse, you may wonder why I stay , maybe I'm a glutton for punishment but I do like the course.
The course now isn't a patch on what it used to be, around the greens and the fairways there are bare patches and most bunkers have very little sand it like a concrete base with a sprinkling of sand on top.
Play is slow at best as there are never any rangers to keep the pace.
For example went out a couple of weeks ago the about 40 mins after the group infront played steady golf caught the group infront on hole 7 they carried on holding us up finished the front 9 in 1 hour 30 mins.
The back 9 took 3 hours 20 mins, when I complained was told that around 4.5 to 5 hours was acceptable.
Could not get the person there to understand that 3 hours 20 mins for nine holes was more like 6 hours plus
Dreadful service
Dreadful service. Lots of problems. Staff miserable and very rude. I have been to the Celtic manor many times. This was my last time visiting!
I emailed my list of complaints and they didn’t even have the decency to respond!
V poor!
Misleading Package Name, Poor Service, and Unauthorised Charges
We booked the “Sunday Spa Stay Over” for the bank holiday weekend expecting a relaxing, luxury experience—but unfortunately, it fell far short.
Upon arrival, there was a long queue to check in, which moved painfully slowly due to a lack of staff at the front desk. Despite booking a Signature Collection stay, which supposedly offers a separate early check-in desk, we were told to queue with everyone else.
By the time we finally checked in, I had to rush to make my spa appointment—only to be told they had no record of it. After searching my details, they informed me my treatment was booked for the Monday instead. Upon checking, buried in the terms and conditions is the rule that treatments are only offered on the Monday. While I accept I should have read the fine print, calling it a “Sunday Spa Stay Over” is incredibly misleading when the actual spa treatment is scheduled on a Monday hours after your stay ends. We were fortunate to live locally and could return, but most guests wouldn’t have that option.
The blonde girl at the spa reception was also dismissive and unhelpful, making an already frustrating situation worse. That said, credit where it’s due: the brunette receptionists the next day were fantastic, and my masseuse, Amy, was lovely—along with the food and service at the Grill, which were faultless. These are the only reasons this review has one star.
Our room was modern and clean, but disappointing for a 5-star hotel—no minibar, which you’d expect as standard. Overnight parking also cost £20, it should be free when you’re paying around £400 for a one night stay.
On Monday, we had breakfast included at Steak on Six but chose instead to eat at The Olive to meet friends. That was a mistake. Despite having a reservation, we waited 20 minutes in a queue stretching to the main doors. Once seated, the food was cold, and there were no bowls, cups, or cutlery available. It was chaotic and disorganised. We left and went to McDonald’s instead.
The final insult came days later when my card was charged without permission. When I called, I was told it was a gratuity charge for the Grill—two days after we dined, despite having already settled the full bill (which included a 10% service charge) at the restaurant. The staff member has promised a refund, but frankly, this kind of unauthorised charge is unacceptable.
Overall, this hotel is not what it used to be. Many of the staff are kind and helpful, but the operation is disorganised and the experience isn’t worthy of a 5-star rating. There are far better options in the area that offer a genuinely luxurious and stress-free experience.
Strongly advise against coming here!
Strongly advise against coming here!! Rooms are outdated, service is poor, bar 2010 golf course the other two are bang average & prices are extortionate! £5.25 for a Pepsi max & £3.50 for a bottle of water is ludicrous. They charge £20 a night to park your car which isn’t advertised. Will never return.
