Honestly terrible
I called childline early hours in the morning because I was having suicidal thoughts and I didn’t know what to do. I have been recommended to use childline as it’s a line that’s open until 3:30am, however I really don’t see the point in staying open until that time because when I called she told me to come back at 7:30am because they only deal with people in crisis at night. I’m sorry but I called for a reason, because I am struggling and I don’t know what to do. Surely helplines are there to help you before something bad happens. But no!
Not to mention the councillor I spoke to seemed like she didn’t care at all. She replied with “mmm” so many times and it really annoyed me. Then she says “I think you need to try and get rest and call back in the morning” - the reason I called was to get help. She didn’t even seem like she knew what to say and honestly made me so angry. I felt really anxious about calling and other people had said that they were really understanding, but she just seemed like she couldn’t give a dam and made me feel even worse.
I am not going to use childline again because it’s just a waste of time and didn’t help me at all. The hardest thing to do, is to seek out for help to someone you don’t know and they don’t make it any easier for you. I honestly don’t recommend childline at all! What’s the point in a helpline for children if they don’t actually help you?
To say the least it is a complete waste…
To say the least it is a complete waste of time, the people who are there to “listen” would rather be anywhere else but listen . When I told them about how I was feeling there was simply no response .
Very good to use as a safe space
I haven’t tried speaking to a counsellor so I’m honestly surprised to see these reviews. The website itself is very nice and easy to use, I like having a safe space and there’s games and message boards and stuff, I do feel less alone than I did before and like there’s something to fall back on. In one of my posts I implied I was su1cidal and got an email from a councellor pretty soon after, idk if it was a bot but that was pretty good.
I came to use the texting service to…
I came to use the texting service to talk about my extreme anxiety about school and my future in the summer/ feelings that I wanted to die.
I’m 17, and yet I felt extremely patronised. When I told them “All I want to do is learn, having to jump through so many hoops makes me so depressed” in relation to anxieties about my future, they simply responded with “but you seem smart”.
The respondents seem to have no understandings of any problems past extreme abuse or danger of self harm. Don’t use, it just made me angrier.
Unhelpful and made me feel worse
I am currently questioning my gender. I used childline as a way to seek help as I was confused and worried (this all happened today). Their aim wasn't to help me. When I told the 'counciler' who's skills were limited to getting me to expand on my answers and the phrase "how does that make you feel?" Useless, they made me feel worse about myself rather than better.
bullsh-t
Questioning my gender identity and all she said was “oH tHaT sUcKs ChEcK oUr FoRuMs” in different ways over and over again- bi—h I was looking for HELP
My daughter who is special needs was…
My daughter who is special needs was getting bullied at school and when she was sat in the bath she told me one day mum I am so unhappy and she broke down into tears. That hurt me as a mum so much so I spoke to her and I asked her to ring child line because my advice isnt always the best. So she phone and said I'm being bullied at school and all they said to her was go online so they didn't even want to listen to her she couldn't go online because as I said she is special needs and couldn't write her feelings but she just said ok to the person on the phone because she had been treated so horribly at school that she thought she wasnt worth listening too.
At least I was there to comfort her but wot a total waste of time childline telling children to go online cus they cant be bothered to listen to them is a disgrace and I will never give and charity to them.
This letter is very mild and polite but in my mind I'm fuming
I honestly avoid using Childline
I honestly avoid using Childline with a passion. I have dealt with depression, self harm and attempted suicide in the past. I still struggle with suicidal thoughts/tendancies & issues occuring in day to day life; though I now am more conscious of when I need to reach out to someone for help before things get too serious. I gave Childline one too many chances, I have waited hours on end (no problem, I understand that they have high demand) only to be made to feel worse by counsellors who don't seem to care at all. I've also had many try to send me elsewhere and instead of attempting to talk me through things, just telling me that I need to deal with my issues. I've also had instances where I've been talking to a counsellor and the chat has shut off. Now, I only ever call/contact Samaritans as even if they can't help me with the issue, they will take the time to listen to how I'm feeling and many a time they have helped me when Childline couldn't be bothered.
Ketchup deficiency
My child wanted soap after after doing a massive dump (you should’ve seen it) and couldn’t wash his hand as I am crippled. Later I asked for ketchup for his chips as he only eats his food with ketchup. My child is now in hospital because he has a ketchup deficiency all thanks to childline. Do not call them when you need help as all they do is take your child away from you or don’t help you at all.
The text responders act so much like bots
The text responders act so much like bits that I'm almost sure they are bots! The exact same with their web responders. I phoned in even though I was apprehensive about it because I just wanted some sort of human response. The people on the other line have little to no reaction. Just responding with a "yeah, mhmm, yep." And then directing you to either the text line or telling more information about childline.
THE BEST
THE BEST! Their 1 to 1 counsellor chats are such good places to tell someone privately about your problems. They are such lovely people and you can talk to them about absolutely anything, good or bad!
I was made to feel unimportant
A while ago I used the childline website due to suicidal thoughts, and being on the verge of acting on them. I wanted to die, but didn't want to want to die. I tried to make it clear that i was in a bad situation, and was about to harm myself, but the person on the other end seemed really disinterested and didn't say much in response to what i was telling them, it sort of felt like i was talking to some sort of AI. The conversation ended when they told me that the site was busy and there were "more important situations than mine" because i responded "i don't know" when they asked me if i was planning on taking my life, i felt like such a burden to them, and it only furthered my want to harm myself. I felt so alone that night. Honestly that experience really tarnished my view of the service, and now i don't trust it as much as i used to.
I used to love Childline
I used to love Childline. Used to. I spoke to them today after 12am (midnight), which is for crucial/important people. I spoke about alcohol problems before I could even tell them about how my alcoholism has affected my depression and suicidal tendencies, especially on the night I messaged, the woman I spoke to told me to read their alcohol section, which I had many times, after i spilled my heart out to her, bare in mind I hadn’t even finished my story before she sent me the link to ‘alcohol and the harm it does’ section telling me there’s more important people waiting? Thanks, that really helped my mental state, always knew I was less important because no one gives the time to listen!!
