I contracted Editing Press to perform a through edit of my PhD dissertation and found the experience to be a bitter disappointment. I am dyslexic, and I have limited time because I am a single mother, so I had every hope that their promise of "thorough editing" would help me to get through to the conclusion of my PhD with minimal interruption. This was not the case.

Thorough editing offers both editorial comments, copy editing, and footnote editing. Their editorial comments were only tenuously related to my dissertation subject, with repeated suggestions that were outside the scope of my research, their line-by-line editing was cursory and limited, as was the footnote editing. Upon submitting my "edited" dissertation to my advisors their response was shock that the document had been edited at all. To quote my adviser directly, "In my 10 years of supervising Graduate students, I have never seen such a poorly copy-edited thesis. The document contained every kind of error." I was so hopeful when I found Editing Press, my dyslexia make it impossible for me to self-copy edit, and moreover, to evaluate their service independently. It was a shocking disappoint to me when my advisors told me that there had been a total failure of meaningful copy editing.

As a direct result of this limited and cursory editing result, my attempts to finish my thesis, was unnecessarily stressful. My adviser spent hours copy editing before we decided to delay my submission so that I could contract an additional copy editor. I did in fact contract a second copy editor to meet my delayed deadline.

My attempt to resolve this experience directly with Editing Press has been upsetting. After contracting my second editor I requested a partial refund to account for what I paid to the additional copy editor. After several rounds of emails and communication, after submitting evidence of the failure, and of my payment to a second copy editor, the board of editing press denied my requested partial refund and described my claims as “spurious.”

To summarise my experience with editing press: my thesis underwent only the most cursory copy editing, and when brought to their attention, Editing Press made no attempt to repair this, instead they called my claim spurious, they accused me of lying about my experience. I cannot more strongly recommend that you do not use this service. Find a local editor, speak to your advisor, use word of mouth. I wish I had done that the first time, as I ultimately had to in the end.

It was a delight to work with the Editing Press. I was able to avail of their "Thorough Editing" service through a partial scholarship granted by the Laura Bassi Foundation, though I would certainly look to work with them in future even without the financial offset provided by the scholarship. Not only is the staff at the Editing Press professional and accommodating in their exchanges—they were able to set up a reasonable payment plan for me, since I am a graduate student—they are also incredibly understanding and supportive of the various hurdles that come up during the drafting process, such as needing to adjust submission deadlines. The feedback I received will be immensely helpful as I continue to revise my writing and nuance my argument. I look forward to working with them again!

Having worked on my article extensively, I became blind to some of its gaps. The editor drew my attention to them and provided extremely helpful suggestions for improving the structure of my article.

The editing of my journal article was what I needed at the time. An unbiased, critical review of my writing style and a topic I felt passionate about. Feedback was concise, prompt and will only enhance the final draft as well as future writing. I would 100% recommend any person new to writing journal articles to use this facility. I am satisfied with the edition work! The number one merit is being fast and punctual. They will return it to you within their guaranteed time without delaying your plan. Sometimes they can pick out some issues that are related to the contents and inconsistencies with the previous pages. It demonstrates that they did make efforts when editing it, not only to correct the basic grammar from sentence to sentence. I was very happy with the work of the editors who reviewed my dissertation. I am not an English-native speaker but found that what I was trying to say in a foreign language probably not polished enough was perfectly understood by the editors and they came up with accurate and precise ways of saying it. I wasn't happy with the first round, but I communicated this and substantial and helpful revisions were provided in 10 days. While I didn't agree with all of the feedback, most of it was extremely helpful and will improve the quality of my manuscript. I highly recommend them, but make sure you communicate your needs. The reviews gave amazing feedback regarding the language and were also extremely careful about the general understanding of the paper. I was completely thrilled about the suggestion of the editors. There are clear and easy to implement with a lot of suggestion to improve the papers' structure. For instance comments such as "this sums up the argument well, the abstract could take advantage of this", shows that they take the work in its entirety and really try to help bring papers to the next level!
