Arrived quickly
Arrived quickly, looks good, but a bit more complicated than it seems from the website, and mine still hasn't got hot enough after around 4 weeks and 2 go's at boosting it. Also, I may have to stress and get nerdy over filling it!

We’re glad to hear your HOTBIN arrived quickly and that you’re happy with how it looks. How quickly the HOTBIN heats up will depend on the amount of waste you have available to add to the HOTBIN. It needs to be at least half full before you start to see temperatures in the hot composting zone.

So easy to set my hotbin up when it arrived. All of the supporting instructions were clear and easy to follow. I was shocked how quickly it heated up, just 3-4 days to reach ideal temperature.

Read the instructions carefully before you buy.
We found the bin quite tricky to assemble and are disappointed that the lid doesn’t simply flip up like the smaller versions shown on the website. When we fitted the lid it took both of us to get it off again - not practical in frequent use. So we have decided not to push the lid fully shut to make it easier to use.
I feel the design needs some improvements.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, we are genuinely sorry to hear how disappointed you’ve felt. This is far from the experience we want anyone to have with a HOTBIN, especially when you were excited to get started with composting.
We appreciate your feedback about the assembly and the lid. The HOTBIN Mega is self-assembly which we do advertise on our website and is designed to seal tightly to retain heat. Although it should take a little force to fit together it should not be impossible – We see you placed your order with Marshalls have you spoken to them regarding your concerns or to our customer support team who can help with assessing if any adjustments can be made to your HOTBIN to make the process easier.
Regarding emptying the compost, the HOTBIN Mega is designed to work like a traditional batch composter but with the benefit that the waste is completely contained and so the heat is increased allowing you to compost faster- but this does mean to remover the waste you either have to dismantle or you can dig out from the top to remove the compost.
We thank you for your feedback and will pass this onto our design team for them to look at any potential future modifications to the HOTBIN Mega.

Feeding the HOTBIN every 2-3 days should help to maintain the temperature in the hot composting zone.
Just to note that the first batch of compost you produce will be the roughest bath of compost as there was no initial het in the HOTBIN, but as you continue the process you will find the quality of the compost produced will increase.

We appreciate your feedback regarding the internal temperature rise taking longer than expected. The internal temperature can take time to rise depending on how much waste you are adding to the HOTBIN. It does need to be al least half full and this can take time to build up depending on how much waste you have available.

What concerns me is rats may chew…
What concerns me is rats may chew through the material as it’s isn’t very tough .
The straps to keep the door closed fall down all the time and very temporary.

The concerns you’ve raised about durability and the door straps are important to us, and we want to make sure you feel confident in what you’ve purchased.
Whilst we do not claim the HOTBIN to be rodent proof as rats in particular can chew through concrete the HOTBIN has been designed and tested to ensure its attraction to all unwanted visitors (including mice and rats) is minimised and in 99.5% of cases no issues are reported.
Regarding the door straps, these are only for additional security. The hatch will not fall off without the straps. However, if there is a lot of pressure behind the hatch from a high volume of compost then it may push the hatch out a little – this is most likely to happen if compost is not removed from the HOTBIN on a regular basis.
For further help on tightening the strap please contact our customer service team who will get this sorted for you and please check out our website for advice on further deterrents you can put in place for rodents if you still have concerns.
