Universal Damp came to survey our property at the request of a potential buyer. The surveyor arrived two hours early while we were getting children ready for school, and tried to open our (locked) front door without knocking, which was a poor first impression.

He was in our house for 15 minutes, and misdiagnosed every problem as rising damp, and went on to quote nearly £11,000 worth of work. This work was totally inappropriate for a Victorian terrace, and included a chemical damp proof course (which is damaging to lime mortar) and waterproof tanking (only recommended for cellars, retaining walls and other areas in contact with soil). This would have resulted in the brickwork being unable to breathe, and caused far more damage in the long run.

We had a separate independent damp surveyor come in for a second opinion, who didn't have an agenda or products to sell; by contrast, he was in our house for three hours and gave us a thorough rundown of exactly what the problems were and how to fix them. We we were able to get the work completed for under £5000, and solve the actual root causes instead of covering them up.

Universal Damp may do good work once they're in, but don't trust what you're told by their surveyors.
