I rented a car through EasyCar because I thought I would be covered and get help if anything went wrong but when the car hire company charged me about 200 Euro to fill two tanks, 6 months later, I am still battling to get my money back with EasyCar.
I rented a car for 2 weeks in Croatia from a scam company through EasyCar called XL Rent a Car. I rented an estate car as we were travelling around the country and had plans to travel to different countries.
We arrived at 2-3 in the morning and we picked up a Ford Focus Estate. It was dark, we were tired, picked up the car and drove to a hotel. In the morning, I realised it had over 200,000km on the clock, but thought that this is how things must be in Croatia so we continued our holiday.
About 2-3 hours into our first day, the clutch and air conditioning packed in and I only just got it off the road and into a service station in a safe parking space. I called the company and was told someone would call me back. When the boss called me, she accused me of driving the car incorrectly and that is why the clutch broke... I said... Its got over 200,000 km on the clock... Maybe its old and broken. After arguing with this nasty woman, she said that she would send someone and they would be there in a few hours. 6-7 hours later a guy turned up with a newer car, he tinkered with the broken car and somehow got it working again, making me think it was a known issue. As this car broke down, I had no ability to put back in it the 1/4 of a tank we used.
The 2nd car came with no paperwork. I took pictures of the fuel gage and videos of the car and got on with our holiday. At the end of the holiday, I filled the car back up and added an extra 1/4 tank to repay the fuel from the first car and then after I got home, I was hit with two cars being refilled at a cost of around 100 EURO each.
I lost a day of my holiday and have been fighting this for months, Easy car keep asking for proof I filled up the first car... its like they are completely ignoring what actually happened!
DO NOT USE EASY CAR and NEVER USE XL RENT A CAR! SCAM!
Betrug und Nötigung
Hatte über billiger-Mietwagen gebucht. Bisher war immer bei allen vertretenden Anbietern top und fair gelaufen und ich hatte deshalb den Anbieter XL nicht extra recheriert. Diesmal zum ersten mal Betrug und Nötigung!!! Alles was vorherige Kommentatoren beschrieben haben wir gestern in Split Airport erlebt. Bei der Übergabe sollten wir erst 50€ zahlen, da unsere Visa Karte nicht akzeptiert wurde. Wir bekamen ein 6 J. altes Auto, dass fast überall Kratzer hatte. Bei der Abgabe war die Dame erst super nett, kontrollierte dann fast eine 1/4 Std. das Auto rundum Zentimeter für Zentimeter. Dann wurde uns lächelnd mitgeteilt, dass alles ok sei. Kaum durch die Sicherheitskontrolle wurden wir angeschrieben, dass wir etwas im Auto vergessen hätten. Wir sollten uns dringend melden. Dummerweise sind wir ans Telefon gegangen und man teilte uns sehr barsch mit, dass wir wieder an der Schalter kommen müssen, es wäre doch ein Schaden am Auto, direkt unter der Fahrzeugschürze/Front wo keiner hinsieht und man selber auch keine Fotos macht. Wir sollten sofort den angeblichen Schaden zahlen, die Rechnung war schon geschrieben, wir sollen nur noch unterschreiben.... Die Dame wurde sehr unhöflich als wir das gewünschte nicht lieferten.

Rented car at the Split airport for 23 days in September 2024. Car was awful, more than 5 years old with more than 100 000 km on the clock. It had 46 damages on the paper, some them quite a big with rust. Customer Services very unhelpful, promised to change a car but never happened. Be aware out of hours high charges. Avoid them if you can.
Please be careful if you use this company
My husband and I travelled to Split and hired a car for the week through this company. We had a dreadful experience from start to finish.
We got told upon collection of the car that they would take a €1,200 deposit and hold it until the car had been returned. I was extremely uncomfortable with this and have never experienced it when hiring a car. They actually took this money from our bank so do be aware of that. Thankfully, I had read the other terrible reviews about them finding faults with cars and withholding deposits, so we thoroughly videoed the entire car in the airport car park (inside and outside including the roof and alloys). There were three scratches marked on the sheet they gave us and probably a minimum of 20 on the car; it was a wreck. The engine also sounded dreadful so we videoed that as well.
Upon returning the car they insisted on making us go back to the car to look over it. Funny how they don’t do this when you collect it isn’t it?! When I say she went through it with a fine tooth comb, I really mean it. The convenient thing is, she had photos of all of the scratches. So when my husband queried why only three were documented, she claimed they’d been too busy during the summer to update their system. This was the start of October, we were the only booking the day we turned up and the girl at the desk was just playing on her phone when we arrived, so that doesn’t really add up. She honed in on one particular mark that we thankfully had documented, or they’d have absolutely had us for it. My husband made her agree verbally that everything was fine and that we would be getting our deposit back. We have since had this back (and had we not, had enough evidence to go through our bank) but I know we wouldn’t have if we hadn’t been so careful. What really frustrates me is they clearly rip people off and don’t even get the cars fixed based on the horrible state ours was in.
They are a rude, unprofessional setup so if you use them, please ensure you use a credit card, document the whole vehicle before you drive away and take out the full insurance through the company and not a third party. Yes they were extremely cheap and I realise you do get what you pay for, but their practices are totally unethical.

Pick up should alarm us. Had to pay additional fees for not using credit card of €70 as handling fee. Could not use my booking creditcard for unclear reasons. Because return time was mid-day the pickup office told us we do not need to call 30 mins in advance.
When returning the car they where very upset that we did not call. Trying to tell her that our instructions where different resulted in a short 'you are not keeping yourself to the rental agreement.'. Next they got very angry and hostile. The women spend minutes whiping the car with some cloth. Obvious looking for something, dropping the cloth, picking up dirt. We got nervous and asked what is going on. Then they got hostile and angry. As we tried to calm one lady (not inspecting the car) the other woman suddenly found 2 scratches. I'm certain she had created them herself. They were so obvious, we would have seen it ourselfs ealier. Suprise, surprise, the cost to fix it was €900, about equal to the deposit.
Avoid this company at all costs. Better to go for better known brands.
Oh, one more thing. They offer additional ensurance. The cost of that ensurance would have saved me €200. Absurt prices for rental of 4 days. Please, never ever do business with this company.

Would not recommend whatsoever, everything is hidden behind additonal fees that you have to pay on site which makes is way more expensive than alternative retailers

EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION. When we dropped the car off, 'Chris' spent half an hour, at times on her knees with a cloth inspecting every mm of the bodywork, the cloth was continually dropped in the grit of the car park then picked up to continue wiping. it was very evident they were wanting any excuse possible to find damage to charge for. I began taking detailed photos at this point, asking her name and head office details. XL will try to scam you. Best avoid at all costs and go for a more multi national company that has a head office to complain to. The car was covered in scrapes and scuffs before we drove off so every time they have charged previously, it certainly hasn't been repaired.
Nötigung und Betrug!
Hatten Verspätung wegen Unwetter in Hamburg. Als wir in Split ankamen, war zunächst für 45 min. der Schalter geschlossen. Dann wurde uns gesagt, dass unser Mietvertrag abgelaufen sei, obwohl die Flugnummer bekannt war, und das Auto bereits für eine Woche voll bezahlt war. Wir waren gezwungen, einen neuen Vertrag zu schließen, der jetzt aber EUR 230 teurer war.
Haben dann das gleiche Auto erhalten, wie vorher gemietet. Das war Nötigung und Betrug!
Finger weg von diesem Anbiete!!!
Arnaque caution
1 )Vehicule non conforme a celui demandé ( nous avons eu un vehicule plus petit ) et même prix .
2) Malgré que le vehicule est été rendu sans aucun dommage et que le loueur l'ai lui même confirmé , la caution à été encaissé ( 1290€ ) . Evidemment aucune reponse aux mails ni aux appels

Oplichters. Na in ontvangst nemen auto bleek dit een Suzuki Swift te zijn ipv een VW Polo. Auto zat helemaal vol met krassen en andere schade's. Binnen zag er prima uit totdat er een bijrijder in de auto gezeten had, want toen kwamen er allemaal oude zoutvlekken tevoorschijn. Niet van ons, want de auto heeft de kust geeneens gezien en we kwamen ook net vanuit NL. Bewust laten zitten om mede te kunnen delen, echter bij inleveren was er niemand aanwezig en/of bereikbaar en zodoende de auto achter gelaten op de inleverplek. Eenmaal thuis kreeg ik een app dat ik de zoutplek veroorzaakt had en er 300!!!! Euro cleaning fee ingehouden zou gaan worden.. Wat een scam. Om een uitgebreide rekening gevraagd waarin alles gespecificeerd gaat worden en die is mij toegezegd maar uiteraard nog niets ontvangen. Gereserveerde bedrag op mijn creditcard a 1050 euro zou na inleveren binnen 24 uur opgeheven worden. Dit is ook nog niet gebeurt. Blijf weg van dit bedrijf zou ik zeggen!!!!
Dreadful experience
Average car full of dents, high mileage, stink-awful even hostile reception at the Customer Sevice desk in Split with the final straw being 140 euro late arrival / booking reactivation charge for being 1 minute late beyond the 2 hour threshold owing to late arrival of the EasyJet plane. Draw your own conclusions but my advice is clear ! And by the way, I was faced with paying the late arrival charge or walking away from the week's reservation for which I had already paid.
Don't Book with xl rent a car
Don't even think to Book with them. No mantenance, dangerous car, no brakes, wheels unchanged, and multiple trials to charge false fees. WE were obliged to rent a broken infant seat. The car have not been filled with Adblue (Diesel/gasoil complementary liquid)They eventually charged us with 800€ for a scratch on the front bumper. The cop at the airport said: "I understand but this is an often legal robbery"
Not happy 😔
Went away to Croatia last week, arrived in Split and booked this car rental company - all paperwork checked, deposit paid. Luckily the lady that gave us the keys and paperwork told us to take pictures of the car before leaving the airport for our own security (lots of marks on the car, and dents from previous) so did a full video of inside and outside of the car. Perfect drove away, did our week, had a blast! Arrived in UK to messages and photos saying that there were new damages and we had to pay for the damages.
Luckily we’d taken pictures and videos and used this immediately to explain that these marks were already present. They didn’t reply to any of our messages for more than 24hrs …. Day later they reply apologising and saying they’d made a mistake! Clearly they were trying to see if they could make more money from us!
This would have been a completely different review had they not “made a mistake” has they are trying to say they have made. Don’t believe that it was a mistake at all … if you use this company ensure you take thorough photos and videos of the rental car before leaving with the keys. If we hadn’t have done that who knows how much we would have lost.

Everything was awful. She told me that she doesn't care. Left the location and told me there was no one else working. Left us in the middle of the car park with a car that had a flat battery in 35 °C heat.
We arrived at the desk at split airport, filled in all the required forms and went to the car. The car was a small automatic bmw instead of a manual suv. The car had bubble gum stuck to the back seat and the front floor mat. When this was pointed out the girl said I didn't clean the car! I told her the car is very small and we booked an SUV, she said she didn't care and left! We went to start the car and the engine wouldn't start. I rang them and they said there's no one at the airport anymore. They said they'll send someone from split . We were left in the boiling sun with a car that didn't start. This continued for over an hour. They came back and told us the battery is dead!
Also at the desk they wanted to charge €150 for the additional driver for 1 week. I had to argue that it is €8.75 per day. She was very very rude and asked me to prove it. I showed her the website terms and conditions and she didn't even apologise. Worst experience!
Worst car rental company around
Worst car rental company around, avoid at all costs.
From the start, the guy told me to take pictures of around the car, they didn't do an inspection.
So I did this to the best of my ability, and I took great care in looking after an already badly damaged car.
On return, the same guy then went straight to a small dint on the underside of the front bumper, and said that we have caused the damage.
Without a garage even looking at it, they said it would cost 950 euros to fix, funnily enough the exact amount of deposit that we had to put down.

Alt var godt ,meget imødekomme mennesker jeg har haft kontakt. Bilen var ok er meget tilfreds. Fik min bil i Zadar lufthavnen. Det er to år jeg bruge dem.Vil helt sikkert bruge dem igen næste år.
They cheated me!
They cheated me! When drop of the car we check together with the employee that there was no new damages! 6 days later I got a damage bill 350€!!! The contract they included the mail there was diffrent register plate?! Asking this the answer was that the because the car is not on rental use anymore its diffrent?!! Asking why your employee check the car with us and confirm there was no new damages I never got any answer?! When I got to the rental desk drop of the car employee said you can go and I was like WHAT arent we gonna check the car??? Then came to check the car with us. The "damagepic" was taken just couple of minutes we walked away from the car. This is nothing but cheating!!! My husband and I are car painters so we really look cars as a professional eye. We have always trusted croatian people but now the trust is gone! I will not recommend this company for everyone. P.S. the earlier rewiew is written by company, Tomislav Cule. This is not the way how to run a succesful business!
