Agree with the reviews on here. They just charged me £250 for an auto-renewal I did not even authorise or know of. They did not send an email around the time saying they were about to charge. Only saw it on my cc statement. Never give your credit card details to this company.

Predatory Billing Practices and Unfair Refund Denials - Avoid at All Costs!

​I am writing this to warn other researchers and students about the deceptive billing practices of Academia.edu.
​On January 15 , I used a trial to download 6 specific research papers. Since then, I have not used any Premium features and had no intention of continuing the service. However, on February 22, 2026, I was suddenly charged 145,000 KRW for a "first-year annual subscription" without any prior notification or invoice.
​My account settings clearly had the "payments for Academia Premium" notifications disabled, yet they proceeded with the charge without my consent. This is a clear violation of transparent billing practices.
​What is even more frustrating is their customer support. Despite their own policy stating that "first-year subscription payments are refundable within 30일," they repeatedly send me the same "copy-and-pasted" template response claiming renewals are non-refundable. They are not even reading my emails or addressing the fact that this is my FIRST year, not a renewal.
​I have already requested a refund on the same day the charge occurred, but they continue to ignore my legitimate rights as a consumer.
​If you value your money and privacy, DO NOT link your payment information to this site. I am still demanding a full refund immediately.

Mi sono dimenticato di annullare l'account Premium, di prova e si sono presi 157 € senza preavviso,
ho fatto richiesta di rimborso. Entro 30 giorni mi dovrebbe rispondere visto che non mi hanno risposto vorrei sapere un email per scrivergli peggior servizio clienti della storia

Billing to my credit card without consent - could only be resolved by AmEx.

They ripped us off for almost twice the annual fee that they initially stated. Our credit card company won’t cancel the charges even though we were never informed of the increased rate.
On top of that, the site is not even useful, so it’s doubly a rip-off.

Where is the zero option.

Pessimo. Come altri, ho eseguito un pagamento di un euro per visualizzare dei documenti, e (senza avvertire o altro) mi sono stati addebitati 150€ un mese dopo. Non ho mai usufruito dei servizi premium, per altro. Attualmente ho fatto varie segnalazioni e coinvolto la banca, segnalando come frode il sistema.
Ho inviato anche una mail diretta. In caso di mancato rimborso, procederò per vie legali.

Academia enrolled and charged me for the Academia Premium. I did not want that and wanted to end my account with them and I am not an annual charge plan. I have filled about 10 different companies with them over the past 24 hours. I believe that customer service is an Ai system. I informed my bank not to accept the charge but it appears that Academia has been able to go around and post a charge. I will report Academia to the Federal Trade Commission if this matter can not be cleared up. What they are engaging is fraud, pure and simple.

Suddenly I was charged $159. I never intended to subscribe for a year, and they have no way to cancel it. I feel totally ripped off.

If they were legit they would refund money in such situations, not smugly sit there with my money sneering at me. I'm 73 and this money I need for food, etc.

I recommend staying clear of this BS scam site.

Wish I could give this company a 0. I don’t recall ever signing up for a premium subscription. I first signed up for a free acct in 2014 under my university email, and set up forwarding to a new email, which is linked to my PayPal. This company withdrew 5$ from my acct on Jan 1, 2024, for “signing up for a premium account” (?), then $179 dollars from my account on Jan 31, 2024, then $299 on Jan 1, 2025, and now a whopping $499 on Jan 1, 2026. I’ve never used their premium services. The sent me an email titled “update on academia premium” that plainly states that I could request a refund within 14 days of the auto renewal, but they refused to send back the $499. I work for a law firm and am exploring a potential suit against this company.

After the trial subscription, they charge me 80$. I accepted, and they told me there wouldn't be any additional charges. But in january the charged me other 80$ dollars, saying it was the second payment for my whole year, when in a previous message, they told me they cancelled the subscription. Shitty page. It's definitely not worth it. I'm already seeing if taking legal actions

Academia charged me $299 five times (!), although I kept protesting against the charge. They then removed three of these charges when I had been led to believe they would remove them all.

In the end, I see that I paid almost $600 to these scammers.

I'd give it a zero if I could. I can publish on Zenodo, I don't need Academia. I wanted to submit an article for one of their magazines. I went through the workflow making the submission. There was one section where I could choose a radio button to indicate I wouldn't pay for the publication but when I finished the page after I submitted said I'd be charged $2000 if publication was approved. Fraudulent practices.

As the ensh*tification of everything to do with academia continues, academia.edu takes it to new levels. A once useful resource is now a zombie pirate site. My annual subscription renewed today and they took £216 instead of the agreed £108. When I queried it they refused to engage - just said that was now my subscription price. Luckily I paid by paypal who agreed to refund the money. Just hoping something else emerges that does what academia.edu used to do.

UNVERSCHÄMT ... Finger weg! Außerdem bekam ich viel zu viele Meldungen ... da sie bei Name "Max Mustermann" nach allen MAXen und allen MUSTERMANNs und allen Max Mustermanns suchen. Völlig irreführende Zahl und die Suchfunktion lässt eine eingeschränkte Suche nicht zu

Great website to make articles accessible but incredibly scummy practices when it comes to premium subscription. On top of the insane subscription price, unsubsrcribing is made hard to do and displayed in such a way to trick you into thinking you unsubscribed only to get a 200$ bill months later that customer service refuses to refund. It's so bad that it made me create a trustpilot account just to slander these practices.

This year, Academia.edu charged me €252.54, which is double what I paid last year (= €126.27) and I do not know why. Since Academia.edu isn't listening to our complaints, I'm making an appeal: Let's find an alternative platform (which I don't know of) and move there en masse. Paolo Rocchi

they refuse to return the money - over 1000 pln - if you forget to cancel subscribtion on time, even if you contact them the same day they took the money. beware.

I unwittingly signed up with Academia.edu, just to get one quote from an academic journal when I was a student, however this was not to be our last encounter! This company has been spamming me ever since.... for years in fact, with "mentions" (apparently somebody thought I had something worthwhile to say, when I had never even shared a paper with them lol!). Tried unsubscribing - this was ignored. I spammed them. This was also ignored. I even tried changing my name to something along the lines of "Fed Up and Annoyed" - who is apparently getting regular "mentions" in the academic works of others, for all the amazing things he/she/it contributes. The spam continues. I'm only sorry that I had to give one star on here. I don't really think they deserve a whole star. It really takes something away from those people who slog their guts out trying to learn things, so they can make better contributions to this world.
